I can't think of many acoustic guitar pairs more iconic than these two...
In this video we'll take a look at two current production guitars based on the original flagship models from Martin and Gibson, two of the heavy-hitters of the American guitar building world.
The classic Slope Shoulders, Mahogany Back and Sides, and short scale length of the Gibson J-45 have been used on countless stages, in studios and songwriting sessions, and on America's front porches for decades; in fact this model dates back to 1942. Elvis, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Woody Guthrie, James Taylor, and Donovan are just a few of the legendary players who chose a J45 or one of it's variants as their go-to instrument. The bones of the J-45 haven't changed all that much over the years. If it ain't broke, why fix it?
Equally prolific and iconic is C.F. Martin and Co's D-28, a square-shouldered dread with rosewood back and sides. The "HD" is Martin's more recent take on the classic Herringbone D-28's of the prewar era. Introduced in 1931, the guitar gained favor with a long list of musicians and songwriters; including Johnny Cash, Paul McCartney, Elvis Presley, Tony Rice, Stephen Stills, Hank Williams, Joni Mitchell, and on and on...
Now if you want my take on the whole thing, they're both absolutely incredible guitars that have some sonic differences; in my mind there's no real winner to which one is "better", which tends to be my feeling with comparing most acoustic guitars of reasonable build quality.
Both Gibson and Martin are building their guitars to a high standard when compared to the guitars of yesteryear, and I hope that I'm still around 50 years from now to see how the guitars made in 2019 have aged! I have a feeling we will all be quite pleased....
