Nope. JD was the only sane one in the crowd. When 90% if the world is insane, only the sane ones seem odd. Sure, his behavior was not exactly helpful in bringing to light the insanity of the world he lives in, but if you have studied enough history you'll realize that his behavior was not exactly out of the ordinary. The vast majority of humanity has lived in a world where there was no where safe to escape violence, and this lack or safety was due to irrational behavior that came from a huge percentage of humanity that failed to understand that it actually takes less work to work together than it does to build a war machine and take resources from "others" while subjugating them as a terrorized work force. I understand you will probably think I'm taking this film way out of context....I'm not. Humanity has way more resources available than it needs to meet the needs of every human on the planet. It's truly just a logistics problem. But, as a species, we consistently fail to stand up to the small percentage that attempts (and is successful) at leveraging the base instincts of humans (instincts that stem from fear and greed). This small percentage tells us "we" are the ones that deserve privilege (popularity). "We" are the chosen ones who have the right to install our arbitrary values and oppress anyone who disagrees. "We" have the right to amass excessive resources while depriving 10x as many people of basic recognition of their humanity. It's popular vs unpopular. High school politics are a perfect example of global politics that lead to war. A small group is popular because they say so and no one else is organized enough to stand up to them. I refer you to Putin. The man has more than anyone could possibly need...but he is killing hundreds of thousands of his own people in pursuit of more almost entirely based on a concept or pride or how other governments may or may not look up to him. Millions of Russians have lived within walking distance of this man for 22 yeara. He hasnt hidden who he is and what type of perso he is, yet millions of Russians have let him get away with it because it wasnt directly impacting THEIR life in a way that was significant enough for them to take ANY risk, no matter how small. And then he launches a war that is literally killing their family members in another country...and yet they continue to do nothing...and THEN he starts a "mobilization" that starts taking members of their own family and sending them to a meat grinder with near zero training and weapons that are decades out of date (while he ALSO threatens to use nukes near nuclear power plants...with prevailing winds that will make sure that 10s of millions of Russians are exposed to the fallout). Is THAT enough for common sense to prevail? Nope...they start fleeing the country by the 100s of thousands because that cant think far enough along to understand that no where on Earth will be safe if they allow this to happen. Humanity, as a species, is horribly wretched. We put in more work harming each other than it would take to help each other. JD wasnt the unhinhed one. He was a perfect example of what humanity puts up with on a daily basis. It's terribly sad, given the small percentage of humanity that is actually worth a damn, that the current world is the best we can do so far. We could be SO SO SO much better....but fear and greed and hate are the dominant traits...with an occasional leader that inspires out better selves and leads to a couple decades of progress. Which usually leads to them being assassinated and then a slow steady decline of the progress they achieved while everyone does as little as possible to maintain it. On the whole, I'm embarrassed to be a part of this. At least JD was forthright and absolutely honest about what and who he was and what his goals were. It's not the best humanity has to offer...but it's usually what they accept and dont stand up to.

He's my favourite character. He's an awful person but incredibly well-written. Which is what I find so interesting. But I do think Veronica is the most complex character morally, she was a victim yet that can't excuse everything she did or let him do.
