So much talent in a man so humble and genuine. I don't think the world has ever fully appreciated JD Souther's remarkable voice or song writing. The Eagles owe their success in part to this man. Glen Frey tried to sound like JD and came close on a couple of the songs that JD wrote for the Eagles but he was never as smooth or polished. This is a song for the ages.
I never in all my years heard this song till I heard it on Walmart radio a few days ago & man did this song hit me in the heart I truly felt this song I'm 45yrs old & I appreciate this songs
I'm pushin' 60 on April 9th. To me, great songs and music never loose their memories or their emotions that go with them! Great songs are like fine wine. They only get better with age!
@@anytimejammin-eva Are you still listening? I sure am. From the beautiful ohooo back ground singers to the very end. It"s so heart felt. The piano is perfect. Have a beautiful day Eva. Our Great King is at the Door!!!
@@linwoodkent1246 I'm always around watching and listening to the videos. I have notification on my cell so if someone replies to my comment. I read yours and not too sure about the 1 million views dropped. I tried looking for the comment you were talking about. I'm interested in finding out why. Let me know when you have a chance! Thanks!
@@anytimejammin-eva All I know is Around the end of 2021 or begining of 2022 the viewer count was over 1,400.000. Then around March I looked and the views were 466,773. They dropped 1 million views. Why? Who knows, mabey they were trying to charge JD for the free advertising of his song. So he maybe agreed to drop the 1million. Or maybe the person who uploaded the video was being told to pay something to youtube, so he agreed to drop the 1 million views to not have to pay. All I know is JD should get the honor for the great song he wrote and performed. Even tho the performance shown was not actual. The song we hear is a Studio recording. But it would have been perfect except for the two backup singers were WAY off track. Anyhow I love the song. Sorry for the LONG speech. God Bless You and Yours
He’s a songwriter who also sings. People in the music business…songwriters totally appreciate him. He reigns supreme with them and i that matters to him more than any commercial success for himself
Legendary writer most people never heard of. Wrote several songs for Linda Rondstat, and the Eagles. Wrote New Kid In Town. So much talent came out of Laurel Canyon back then. JD lived right above Jackson Browne with Glenn Frey in Laurel Canyon. Haunting voice that touches the very soul and an even better writer. Thank You so much JD, for touching all of us with your immense talent.
Heard this song the other night on series xm and cannot stop watching this video. Such a beautiful song and performance, one of the best ever! He is singing with his heart and soul, so moving.....there is nothing out there today that can compare, nothing!! This is definitely deserving of a platinum record and performance JD!!! This just transforms me back to that period in 1979. It's amazing what really good music can do!!!!
Breaking my heart watching culture being destroyed down to money and dirt level, it sincerely does my heart good to hear or read someone who sees it and gets it.
I'm with you Wendy!😳 I keep coming back for this vid for every reason that makes this song sooo soothing the ears ! His voice as well the back vocals there looks, every thing in this makes my day!! Cheer's from Canada!!
Me and you both.... My sibling was only one year older than I was and I was not allowed to hang out with him and his friends...so...Casey Kasum and the top 40 countdown on Sunday mornings was my friend!! That and my cassette recorder ready to hit "record" and "pause" :) Music still is my best friend!
Me too I was 29 years old back then when this song came out I was just recently divorced and that hit me very hard. I still love all the music from the 40s 50s 60s 70s and 80s 90s was OK but not as great 😊
I'm 76 yrs old tomorrow and I play this over and over. WHY was the count of viewers dropped from 1,400,000 plus just 3 months ago, at end of 2021? ( approx). Now it is only 466,773. Why drop 1 million views??? What an insult to JD.
Beautiful song-great vocals! He should have kept some of those songs he wrote for the Eagles and sang them himself. The Eagles owe alot to him for making them super stars!!
this 45 was given to me by a record store owner in the late 80s,who could read my doowop-loving mind; i was a little younger than doowop age-discovered it in the 70's & i continue to love this kind of beautiful music like you give us j.d.
This song came on a channel on my internet radio.....i remembered liking it and then reading up on him and his career online. It mentioned about how he wasn't just a good singer but also a song writer like for the Eagles, like you said, and also played with them and Linda Ronstadt like Teresa said etc! All around artistic and I bet he made some good money from those Eagles songs!
right at the height of the covid epidemic last year i lost my mom, couple days later i was driving home and this came on the radio and the flood gates opened, had me cryin like a baby. beautiful song
I've always loved the way he sang and his pitch in this song is so remarkable , his music and song he made with the Eagles will last forever...God Bless
@@drumboogie66 So sorry for your loss and may God grant you the peace that passeth all understanding and reassure you of the time in the future where you will all meet again, in the presence of out Savior and Lord Jesus Christ....Amen !
After all these years, the tender song that told it all to single women waiting for the real love to shower them with hugs and kisses they needed from the start. A great song!!
one of my favorites. JD is really a genius songwriter and artist who will be forever loved even by the next generations to come. JD is a music icon and will be a legend in his own right. CARRY ON JD.
For what its worth all the other comments said it great song an should have know the other songs hes beenbinvolved with im sure i llike to know im thinkin alot that i listen to an dont know he was the inspr from them u know ect ect so if u do know let me know ivwas so shocked to know joe south wrote sang some songs no clue he wrote a song deep purp sang an did it well i guess he wrote it du ok god withvyou all❤
Great song from when lyrics and melody meant something in music. JD's singing is extraordinary. From this era: His talent for songwriting I would put right up there with: Croce, John Denver, the Eagles Fry/Henley, Orbison and James Taylor. Very moving and meaningful song.
I just heard it about 2 hours ago for the first time in years. I had forgotten about it. It was like finding a longest friend. Brooding and melodious, one of the best ever.
I' used to think that it was Roy Orbison, until recently. Maybe it's because the voice has some simulrarities and confused it with "Only the Lonely". J-d Southern also wrote two songs for the Eagles.
Such an amazing vocal and beautiful instrumental blend... This song is aready 40 years old, and it sounds just as fresh and beautiful as when it first hit the charts back in 1979...
@@elypowell6797 No just A David Gilmour. The closest I've got is a black Strat on my wall. I'm sure my Dad wished he'd named me Happy. He passed away after I couldn't get a E to E-minor chord progression. 😂 Nah he's fine.
Wrote some of the best songs for other people - don’t think he’s gotten the credit for all of those hits as the song writer, not the singer; great to hear him sing it himself
TRUE STORY,IN 1988 IN A LITTLE VENUE,250 PEOPLE,CALLED THE COACH HOUSE IN CAPISTRANO BEACH CALIF,MR SOUTHER WAS THE OPENING ACT FOR DAVE MASON.JUST A MAN & HIS GUITAR.HE DIDNT REALLY HAVE ANY STAGE PRESENCE & THE CROWD WAS DISRESPECTFUL EARTING DRINKING & TALKING DURING HIS SET.WHEN DAVE MASON TOOK THE STAGE HE ANGRILY TOLD US MR SOUTHERS CREDITS & HOW WE WERE SHITTING ON HIS MUSIC.. WE DID NOT KNOW WHO HE WAS,& HIS HUMBLE DEMEANOR WAS SO UNCONCERNED ABOUT APPLAUSE OR RECOGNITION. THAT IS THE MARK OF A MUSICIAN WHO PLAYS FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC,NOT FOR ACCOLADES.
I'll bet when he finished writing this song, he sat back and thought, "Damn, this is good. I mean REALLY good. I don't know where it came from, but thank you, Jesus!"
Yes - if by 'Jesus' you mean Roy Orbison. Sorry, but 'Only the Lonely' is all over this tune. I'm not knocking it; Everybody has "inspiration" from somewhere, but if you are wondering where it "came from," I would guess that's probably one of the places.
When you are only lonely look to Jesus he is always there for you caressing your heart with His unfailing endless love for you 💗The frequency of God’s Love embracing your heart with Serenity and Tranquillity. No more only lonely feelings echoing in your mind 💗
Glen Frye, Don Henley, Jackson Brown and JD Souther all living in the same building together. What I would have paid to live there at the same time to hear all of these great songs being born.
This was inspired by the Roy Orbison Only the lonely song, JD Souther Loved the song so much he wrote this as a tribute to Roy O song Only the Lonely !.
