J Dilla Inspired Techniques
In this vid, we talk about playing samples very choppy inspired by J Dilla on a beat called Aaahhh on a record called Lost Tapes, Reels + More. This vid is demonstrated on the mpc 2000xl and sp404 sx but the concept can be transferred to any hardware or software.
This is only one of many J Dilla techniques, but if you listen to his album called Lost Tapes Reels + More , u will come across so many dope techniques just from that one album alone. The spirit of Dilla will continue to live on and shout out to Ma Dukes for creating such a legacy thru her son Dilla Dawg aka The King of Beats.

This has to be like 4 or 5 years back I remember hearing it on a vine. Buttttt, now that I think about I heard Runnin from Pharcyde when I was younger so that could’ve been the first time which was way longer ago.

I remember hearing Runnin a long time ago but it was before I knew who Dilla was. The first time I heard a beat and found out about him was Don’t Cry. I can’t tell you how many times, how many days I listened to that song over and over again. Then finding out he was already gone was just insane he really changed the way I listen to music.

I was only a little kid when I heard my first Dilla beat, anywhere between 10-11. I'll never forget, I used to stay up late and sneak watching adult swim when my parents weren't home and my sister would watch me. The commercials came on, and "Waves" from donuts echoed off the T.V. I wasn't a big rap fan at that age, so I never would have dreamed that loving that beat would potentially plant the seed to find my own path making beats all these years later. Dilla is one of my favorite parts of childhood and I love him for it.

The crazy thing about the first Dilla beat I heard was that I didn't even know it was a Dilla beat. I was watching Adult Swim one late night and "Waves" off of Donuts was played in one of the bumps. I didn't know what the hell I was hearing but all I knew was that I loved it. I forget how young I was, but it's kind of fascinating to think that Dilla enchanted me with about 5 seconds of one of his beats, AND with me not even having a clue about who he was. An absolute genius, RIP!!!

I'm an old head so I was digging tracks by artist that I didn't even know were Dilla crafted tracks. It wasn't until years later that I kept hearing repeatedly the name 'J Dilla'. Once I became more prolific with my music knowledge, I was like "Whaaaaat!!! This Dilla cat did all of those joints"??? I felt like I discovered a rare gem. LOL! This gave me a whole new perspective on the music that I always loved. It taught me to pay more attention to who produced tracks and to appreciate the work they put into it. Pharcyde 'Runnin' notably being one of my all time favorites respectfully.

This Irish - Spanish cat named Raul used to came back to Lesotho (country surrounded by South Africa) with video cassettes which had Yo MTV Raps. This is where I first heard “Drop” & “Runnin” (circa ‘95/‘96)though I didn’t know the producer. I would look up album son credits and keep coming across Jay Dee. I had no idea who he was but I thought he was too ill. When I peeped the credits for Keith Murray’s “Dangerous Ground” I was like that’s it, this cat is toooooo much. A year later - in ‘98- I bought Labcabincalifornia and I just kept seeing Jay Dee’s name on the songs I liked.
