This is exactly what I'm wanting to do on a two-tripod setup! Collapsable poles is what I need but I wasn't sure how to do it. I was thinking hinges and barrel locks on 2x2 wood, but this is cheaper and would end up having less slop in the joints. I'd also feel better on PVC clad round oak than square pine. I think I'll epoxy my dowels into the PVC after roughing the oak up a bit and have the PVC touching the adjacent PVC when the legs are assembled with little to no gap between the dowel ends. Great idea!! Thanks for sharing it!
I Don't mean to sound Like a Know-It-All. Your Machine screws are a Number 8 which is the Gauge of the screw not 8/32 of an inch which is 1/4" . The 32 is the number of threads per inch. Screws, Bolts and Wire are all sold by their Gauge. Usually it will be written as " 8 - 32 ".
You show it with on end connected to a pole (tree) or your car. Could two sets of legs be used to set it up where there are no trees or 'solid' anchor points available?
Now we have a better answer for your question. Check out the Tensahedron hammock stand: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KUXQ5KkiqDM.html
Seems like a pretty good design, but why not use 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 inch dowel for a much better weight/size to strength factor? Also, not to be too picky, but it's "guy" line or wire, not "guide" line.
