J.J. McCarthy - Episode #1 | Kurt Warner Breaks Down the Game Tape | College Series '24

I'm finishing up my College Football StudyBall Series on the top six quarterbacks. I'm sticking with six for the most part because I believe these are the six guys who could possibly go in the first round of the draft, which I'm covering for the NFL Network. I may watch some of the other guys, but probably won't do a StudyBall on them. However, I'm happy to discuss them over Twitter.
Today, we're looking at JJ McCarthy. I know a lot of people have him in different places; some have him all the way up in the top five, while others see him as a first-rounder. You understand why there's some debate: he's obviously a great winner at Michigan, but was never asked to carry the football team with his right arm. That can be something that can cause concern. We've never seen him have to throw; if you look through the stats, it was hard to find a game where he threw more than 30 times. That's going to be commonplace in the NFL. So, is he that kind of quarterback? I think that's what everybody is trying to figure out.
For this first game, I chose the Purdue game because it was the one time that he threw for over 300 yards and threw over 30 times. So, it gives us a chance to dive into a game where he was asked to do more than in other games. Let's dive in and take a look at what we see. #jjmccarthy #nfldraft #nfl

My comments about JJ being the best UM QB of all time have aged well. Casual fans don't know about JJ because his stats weren't as high playing for a 'run-first' team like UM. Its only after people study his tape they realize how good he is. Fast forward 5 years and people won't know who was drafted before him.

I love the breakdowns Kurt. What would be cool to see would be a breakdown of some QB’s in college who have been drafted high, but have not done well in the NFL and then try to pinpoint their NFL issues in the college tapes (guys like Zack Wilson, Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, etc…) to see if any of the newer guys have possible problems that could give them problems in the pros too.

He does have 3 years of rookie QBs on here. It's easy to see when an evaluation hits why they are bad. The trick is to notice when the QB evaluator says something about mechanics or vision. Kurt brought up high-volume experience and his overstride in dropping back. Does it sound like much? No. Does it offer a clue that his footwork needs to be tweaked some because it is taking longer to finish a drop? Absolutely. If he goes to a team with a bad OL that extra moment before he sets could mean pressure or a sack. Does JJ have depressed 3rd down numbers because he didn't need to throw a lot on 3rd down due to system and volume or is it an actual problem? JJ's EPA being half of Jayden Daniels is a situational difference, but someone in the draft room better have an answer before draft day.

In the NFL, especially who his WR will be, will make those catches. Brett Favre also threw the ball like that and he turned out to be pretty good from what I remember. The NFL is way faster than college. He's NFL ready. He's only ever lost 1 game as a starting QB. College and high school as a starter. Some guys are just winners and this kid seems to have it. I cant imagine being enrolled in classes at a school like Michigan and playing football at a school like Michigan. Not many can do it. JJ might need a little time but all he has to do now is play football. He's the most all around physically gifted in this draft of all the qbs. I honestly don't believe you could've put any of your other five on Michigan's team and won a title this year. JJ is smart and talented.

Also, Michigan is not that great of a school academically I'm not sure where that's coming from. I like JJ, but come on. The reason he barely had to throw was because he had such a great O line, such a great running game, and such a great defense.

Re-visiting this after McCarthy got drafted by the Vikings. I think there is a good chance for him to succeed because he seemed to perform well in an NFL-style offense and doing a lot of the things that he'll be asked to do in the O'Connell offense. He also seems to process well which is where I think so many physically-talented college QBs fail in the NFL. He still has things to work on and there is some question about his ceiling, but in that situation in Minnesota I think he should at least become an avg starting QB with potential upside from there. A guy who will work well in a structured system with some talent around him, but not a guy who can carry a team like a Mahomes or Rodgers or Brady.

I appreciate Kurt's honesty and how he discusses positive things and room for improvement in an affirming way. Also, from watching several videos of people assessing JJ, I've come to realize how lacking UM's passing game concepts were (though it was sufficient obviously with their rushing attack and overall team success).
@GulNadar
@GulNadar Месяц назад
I agree but across nearly all of college football are passing game concepts that offer up something disappointing. It boils down to how much time they actually get to practice and develop. It; 's come up so often in the last few years on different teams, I almost see it as a wash. The QB being successful in the system, and making throws matters more to me at least for setting a baseline of what they CAN do.

Gotta love all the haters who show up to neg a 20 year old kid playing bigtime college football. Kurt is very critical of JJ-I believe very much because he and JJ are very similar at this stage of their lives. The good news is that JJ is one of the most teachable players ever at this position...and is clearly a winner in every other way. Harbaugh demands that his QBs, first and foremost, move the chains...and this is why JJ played as he did-he moved the chains. What the film shows is that JJ and his receivers did no favors for each other...in this game JJ had many catchable balls that were not caught but the timing and placement of many of those balls was also not very favorable.

@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 Месяц назад
I happen to think that floating the ball not only makes it easier for a receiver to catch it, but also increases the odds of a DB pick it off. Overall, Kurt, this was a very fair analysis of J.J. skills, except for not showing a couple plays highlighting his running ability, which is way above average for a QB. As a Michigan fan, I've watched every one of his games, and his penchant for firing the ball at receivers was readily apparent, which made it very odd for me to keep reading critcs saying he "has a weak arm". While critics are prone to comparisons with other QBs who played on a natty winner and never displayed extraordinary QB skills, I think J.J.'s hightlight reel pretty clearly show he is a guy with extraordinary skills, and a guy who led Michigan to the championship by using those skills when called upon to do so. Wtihout J.J., Michigan would never have made the playoffs.
@PlaySA
@PlaySA Месяц назад
Well sure in some situation it can do that. But you have to learn touch and anticipation to play successfully in the NFL. Not every throw can or should be a fastball. This is just common sense, on deep throws you give your guy more of a chance by letting him run under it, and there is less chance of being picked off than a fastball which is right at the defender's level as well. There are also layered throws over the middle and on corner routes and such that need to have touch. Basically, if the receiver is running into open space then you want to employ some touch and not the 100mph heater
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 Месяц назад
@@PlaySA I can't disagree with your assertion that a balloon ball gives a receiver the chance to adjust his stride and get underneath the pass to complete the catch. While watching a lot of highlight reels in connection with trying to figure out the proper draft order for the top QBs this year, I was really struck with just how fast the DBs close on receivers who seem to be wide open when the pass is released. The issue is the scope of the "some situations" where you apparently agree a soft throw can be intercepted. In the situation where the defense is in man coverage and the receiver is running ten yards free to the open side of the field, or over the top, then, yes, throw a pass with some arc on it. J.J. does seem confident that he can whiz a ball past a defender's helmet and into a receiver's hands rather than tossing a balloon ball way in front of a receiver running at full speed. Maybe he finds it tough to scan the field for the position of a second defender who might be able to make a play on a balloon ball. He certainly is fond of throwing that fast ball, instead, and that makes him a bit of an outlier among QBs. Kurt mentions this several times. The point I was trying to make was a small one, which is that leading a receiver with a soft throw carries its own risks, and J.J.'s preference for tossing fireballs may not be as huge a knock on him as it might appear to be at first glance. How many times have you seen a safety run over to the sideline and pick a long pass that had looked like a TD in the making?
@mavrick6088
@mavrick6088 Месяц назад
Isn't alot of the flaws on coaching? Id imagine once he gets in the league there are going to be better coaches that can help him correct a lot of the small things in his game that need fixing. Touch passes can be corrected. Longer drop can be corrected. The kid is extremely smart and seems to retain things he is taught so the fact he is only 21 is a great thing because he can really hone in on the small details to give him more of a complete game

I think alot of the problem with some of these kids is they think they have to be fun slingers to impress on there tape but he should be coached to be able to touch pass in the proper situations and you would think that would have been taught to him at Michigan with coach Campbell and Jim Harbaugh and I'm a little worried about that as a Michigan fan. Why are they asking him to drive the ball so much. I seriously think it's there type of offense and the odd rout patterns the used that called for the ball to either be driven down the seam or out to the sidelines and he never had games like this one where he had to throw so much. Because of that most of the throws he had to make in games were driving the ball throws and so there was nowhere enough finesse types of plays called. I feel like that was a missed opportunity with part of his development but that should not be the most difficult thing to rep into his game

Kurt he lacks a huge amount of touch to me. Seems so immature in not understanding or feeling the touch throws more. You can’t miss this much or lack the touch like this in the NFL. He has a lot to learn and change at a pretty late stage in order to be productive in the NFL. I don’t see him making it in the NFL as a starter.

As a Bronco fan, I see nothing from McCarthy that gives him a huge edge over Bo Nix. Bo Nix already has a pro level understanding of touch, ball placement, leading your receiver. I don't think McCarthy is even that much more athletic than Bo. McCarthy locks on to his first read, while Bo has already gone 1, 2, 3, down to 4 in 2 seconds. The kid has an advanced level of field awareness. I wouldn't be mad at McCarthy, but not trading up with multiple 1sts. Williams, Maye, and Daniels are the only QB's worth doing that. I'd happily let some other team like the Vikes trade up for McCarthy, then get Bo at 12. Under Sean Payton? Nix is only going to get better, and he's already Heisman level. Bo can drive that ball down the field, too, especially under pressure. Caleb Williams has an average of under 4 yards when pressured. Nix is almost a first down, 8 yards and change when under duress. I think McCarthy is fool's gold as far as trading way up to get him. If he falls to you? Sure, but even then I'd have to really think about it if Nix was there too.
@franknorth164

Bo Nix’s average distance traveled in air is 6 yards. Bo Nix is not an NFL quarterback. Not even close. And I am not a JJ McCarthy fan. This draft class is way over inflated.
@78LedHead
@78LedHead Месяц назад
@@franknorth164 Bo is still deadly accurate when throwing intermediate and deep. IDC how many air yards when you're so accurate, and get it to your playmakers perfectly almost every single time. None of these other kids can process like him. I don't think Bo is special, but, like you, I'm not super impressed with any of the top 4 guys, not enough to trade away your future. I think Bo can be every bit as good as the other guys in the right system, and Sean Payton has such a system.

Kind of delusional to think that you have to do insane stat numbers when something else is clearly working. Michigan's offensive game plan is to win not to be flashy. Washington's defense is terrible at stopping the run, so what did they do? They ran it down their throats.

Why show the game against a terrible Purdue team? Why not the games where he played an actual defense? Ohio State? Penn State? Washington? Maryland? Those are going to be way more relevant to the NFL. Not a game against a can. Theres probably not a single player on the Purdue defense that will be a starter in the NFL.
