J.S.Bach - ARIOSO for organ (Sinfonia from Cantata

In this video you can hear my rendition of J.S.Bach's “Arioso” for organ from his cantata #156 (Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe) played on my Hauptwerk organ. I have chosen to use the sample set of Noordbroek, created by Sonus Paradisi
Some days ago I asked you, my lovely community, which work you would like me to record and with over 40% of the votes came Bach's famous Arioso for organ. It's actually not called Arioso but Sinfonia and comes from J.S. Bach's Cantata "Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe" BWV 156. The melody is played by the oboe in the orchestra and is a hauntingly simple but elaborate cantus firmus and really sets a calm and peaceful mood.
And then I did a little experiment to those who are keen on a little challenge: I modified a specific cadenza in my rendition of the Arioso to completely resemble one from another work by J.S.Bach. Can you guess which one that is?! I know it might be a difficult but I would love to hear if one of you can recognize it?
I will give the answer a week from now :)

Barely had I started listening to your performance that I closed my eyes and found myself in a dream of calming and peacefulness. Your way of playing makes me stop, concentrate and listen. Given that this piece has already been played in many wonderful instrumentations (including as piano concerto with Glenn Gould as pianist), it is no easy feat at all to create an enchanting version on a solo instrument, the organ included. You did it and the reason - and your "secret" so to speak - lies solely in what one could call the spiritual foundation of the musician's performance. There is no higher praise I could think of.

I get very kind feedback for the most part but this comment from you Andreas stands out as one of the most breathtaking I have received. I have pinned your comment because really had a huge impact on me reading it. I feel very blessed that I can move people in such a way with my work here on RU-vid. Dear Andreas - thank you so very much for these words. It gives me a massive moral boost to keep going on with my work. Thank you so much sir!

Lovely to hear this, Philip. I'm finally back after a difficult couple of months, and this seemed a great place to start, because it's a great favourite of mine. (Indeed, I've just posted an abridged recording on my new organ channel). This arrangement is just beautiful, as is your playing. Thanks so much! Now to continue my voyage of discovery!!

Is this your own arrangement? I have three different arrangements of this piece, one by C H Trevor (in F), one by Colin Hand (in Ab), and my preferred version (again in F) by Harrison Oxley.
@philipaggesen
@philipaggesen Год назад
Hi Benjamin. It’s the arrangement by Pierre Gouin. I have however put a some ornaments here and there to give it a more personal touch. Especially in the da capo. You can find Gouin’s score here: imslp.org/wiki/Special:ImagefromIndex/129405/qx84

by "cadenza", do you mean a pattern of ornamentation? I didn't catch it, but did you steal something from the slow movement of the harpsichord concerto in F minor, BWV 1056, which is basically the same piece as this one?
@philipaggesen
@philipaggesen Год назад
Hi Alessandro. I will break it to you. I stole it from "Nun kommt der Heiden Heiland". There is a particular kind of way to play a cadenza. You can find a rendition of that piece on my channel as well. Let me know if you found it!? :)
@AlessandroSistiMusic

@@philipaggesen Thanks, Philip! Yup, I found your very lovely recording of BWV 659 :) I still can't tell which part of this corresponds to which part of BWV 659, but that's totally OK 😅
@philipaggesen
@philipaggesen Год назад
If you find 659 and hear the cadenza at 0:55 it should resemble the cadenza in the arioso at 1:27. I am right or completely off 😅 ?

@philipaggesen
@philipaggesen Год назад
Hi Naoko! Nope this is actually the Sinfonia from BWV 156 but it's often referred as the Arioso by Bach. I have made a rendition of Bach's Air from BWV 1068 here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sncXoa8PHaU.html
