In this video you can hear my rendition of J.S.Bach’s “Erbarm dich mein o Herre Gott” played on my Hauptwerk organ. I have chosen to use the sample set of Nancy, created by Piotr Grabowski
I write that this is an unusual organ work by Bach because of it's very simple texture which was enough for the great Bach connoisseur Albert Schweitzer to suggest that such a simple piece could never have been written by Bach. Although nowadays the work is attributed to him, we know of no other example of this style from his hand. To this day it remains a remarkable rare organ work by Bach.
The translated text from "Erbarm dich mein, O Herre Gott":
"Have mercy on me, O Lord God,
according to your great kindness.
Wash me,
make clean my wrongdoing".

I have heard this before, but it always was just fairly level and "so-so". Here I find the music and soul together -- something that goes so much further than the notes simply being played. Thank you for this.

I love this piece and I have never heard it played more beautifully. Not only your performance, but also the marvellous sonoritiy of your instrument move me to tears. Absolutely beautiful, Philip! And though I also cherish the modern synthesizer as a means to perform (certain) works of J. S. Bach, with this rendition I am inclined to say (with Mozart): the church organ is the sovereign of all instruments.

Lovely Philip - I surprised that Schweitzer would have said that Bach could never have written this - some of the greatest melodies ever written were simple lovely tunes that endear themselves to all music lovers because of their simplicity. Your playing sends goose bumps down my spine because you do not just PLAY music but you LIVE it in the fullest sense. Best wishes dear friend.

I once heard this piece played on a dark winters evening in Salisbury Cathedral. It seems to have some strange haunting power that is only capable of being fully appreciated on a church organ in a large Cathedral. How amazing that a large organ can produce a soft deftness of sound when speaking into into a cavernous building especially one built in the 13th century. A few other chorales come close to it but this one unique. Any chance of Bach's Arioso sometime. You are very lucky to be able to sit in the comfort of your home at the end of the day and play these beautiful pieces.
@philipaggesen
@philipaggesen 2 года назад
Yes, "strange hauting power" is a very fitting phrase to describe this piece. When I had to select this organ I need that Nancy probably would be the most fitting: it had the biggest reverb of all and I thought that the simple melody would have the biggest effect when put in a large cathedral.

Thank you for this interpretation, Philip. It is full of poetry and melancholy. Slow but nevertheless fluent. On some notes it sounds a bit "spicy". Is it the original tuning?
@philipaggesen

Dear Nils-Ole. I think it's because I have put some extra pipe detuning on the sample set. To make it sound more realistic....and out of tune :-)

This is so beautiful and I love your slow tempo. I have just arranged it for four cellos. All of the scores I found online, including the original manuscript, had only half notes in the melody. I wonder what edition you were using if, like you said in a previous comment, you did not put in any ornamentation yourself.
@philipaggesen
@philipaggesen 16 дней назад
Hi! So lovely to read your comment. My rendition comes from a score I found on IMSLP. I think it was from Pierre Gouin and the choice of making no ornamentation just comes from my own personal analysis of the piece being simplistic to almost an "insane" amount. Therefore I feel an "obligation" to keep it simple in my personal interpretation. This is of course only my personal choice :)

This is a sampled organ that I am playing on. This sample set is my Sonus Paradisi from the great organ in Sct. Laurenskerk, Rotterdam! So it's NOT an actual organ I'm playing on at home :)

I’m a professional musician. Never been much for computers. But I’ve wondered about sampled organ. I have a digital sampled B3 type ( 2 manuals called Crumar Mojo from Italy ) Also one octave bass pedals How much would it cost roughly to acquire that sample Set to where I could play it in headphones ? Bach is a god to me.

Dear Philip! Your performance of one of my favorite works of the great composer was wonderful. But why you started improvising with the theme is unclear to me. And I didn't like it. I'm sorry if I offended you. But I always say what I think. And that's probably bad.

Dear Philip! Please excuse me. Maybe I'm wrong. I thought that the original is unadorned in the theme. I downloaded two versions of the notes from the Internet. One for piano is two lines, and one for organ is three lines. There are no decorations in the theme. But in any case, of all the performances that I have watched, your performance is the best! And if I hadn't given up music once, then I would have played exactly like this! ) I have reviewed more than 10 variants of execution. YOU ARE THE BEST!!! BRAVO!!! Curve translation. @@andre26071955 I know the HIP ideas, no question, but in this case the slow and legato version makes sense, for a funeral or sub communione. The human heart was not different this time. And the result is better. The quick interpretation is perhaps better from a dogmatic position, but it sounds a little bit like a fair organ.
@philipaggesen
@philipaggesen 2 года назад
It's funny with this chorale prelude. I find that the interpretation really depends on this organ and room you play in. When I had to select what organ I would do this rendition I thought that Nancy probably would be the most fitting: it had the biggest reverb of all and I thought that the simple melody would have the biggest effect when put in a large cathedral. I know that it isn't the historic correct way of doing it put thought that I would try something different.
