Oh PLEASE do a video of how spells work! That would be a delight. Personally, I feel like the concepts of nonverbal magic and accidental magic (like Harry vanishing the glass to the snake cage) prove that the incantation is not strictly necessary to actually perform magic. I strongly suspect that its main purpose is to serve as a focusing point for children to better grasp the concept and to perform the spells accurately. But a skilled witch or wizard should be capable of performing near any type of magic, whether a spell exists for it or not. In fact, this is most likely how new spells are created in the first place. If you had to "find" the incantation that already existed for a spell in order to cast it, then Hermione's compass spell "Point me" doesn't make a lick of sense.

Brackium Emendo is such a brilliant battle spell. Non-lethal and not dark magic. Requires a full night of potion aided recovery to be back to normal. That alone makes it better than stunning which is easily reversed. Cast it on the bad guys' hands and BOOM, they cannot cast spells. And if you want to turn it up to eleven, certain vanished bones would make for a much nastier time for the subject than even the Torture Curse can yield.

I gotta say, spelling I do not think would matter. To use D&D logic, verbal and somatic components (and material components but we'll ignore that.)and a focus (wand) Are all you need to cast spells. And in the Harry Potter universe that's also true. They get taught how to say the spell, and what wand waving motions they have to do to cast it. And in the Harry Potter universe do you really believe that the written language came before magic spells? Cause I'm 100% certain they were doing magic well before people were writing stuff down. Back when hieroglyphics were a thing did they have to be able to draw what the spell looked like in a stone wall? Probably not lol Not to mention words are spelled completely differently and pronounced differently in different languages. Do you think Japanese kids are running around saying Latin based spells? Of course not! They have a totally different language both verbal and written. But they could cast the same spells. I think it really is just the intent of the spell, issued verbally, and the somatic component of the wand motion. But well trained wizards and witches don't even need to use those if they're good enough. We've seen plenty of magic being thrown around without any of the 3 components. Spelling certainly doesn't matter. I REST MY CASE CARLIN BROTHERS

Rereading the books right now as a teacher of 7 years, I have spent a good amount of brain time trying to figure out how spells work. Like, they obviously have to PRACTICE, and it is clearly linked to intent/focus (ala the Patronus charm). It seems similar to mastering any other academic challenge, like the quadratic formula. J, Ben: recently I found a Harry Potter trivia boardgame from my work place. Unfortunately most of the question in it are very easy and basic, with some slightly tougher ones mixed in here and there. But that got me thinking: how would you two, as experts in hard quizzes and such, fair in a lightning round of easier HP questions? Say that each of you separately answered 50 questions with a three second time limit to answer each one and of course no multiple choice. Perhaps the questions could even get progressively a little harder? Which of you would get more right? Would you both get all of them right? Would it turn out tough for you to quickly remember things from different books between questions? Would there be one that stumps you or maybe your mind just blanks at a certain one for a second too long? I would love to know. And it would be a different kind of Harry Potter quiz for you to do. If you'd like, I could send you questions from the game I found or you could ask your patreons to submit some too. I'd just really love to see it.

English is still very much a latin rooted language. likely the biggest issue is that very few american schools teach all the english language phonograms. So most kids graduate not knowing that “ti” is pronounced SH. they’ve given over to whole language learning and it’s a problem. In my opinion that is. And i wasn’t aware of any of this till I sent my kids to a Classical School where they start learning latin in 3rd grade and don’t use whole language phonics. I realized how many gaps I had in my phonetic awareness.
@asthmaticbee
@asthmaticbee 2 года назад
@@laurenmooers1723 English is actually a Germanic language, the reason it has so many Latin-root words is because in 1066 the Normans conquered Britain and became the ruling class, thus having French influence everywhere. The core of English is still Germanic and can be seen in everyday words like house, cow, green etc. It's "academic" and similar words that were introduced by the educated higher class of the Norman conquerors.

“Lockhartʼs bad at spelling; thatʼs also why Brachium Emendo didnʼt work” This is actually completely correct. To emend something is to remove a problem; to amend something is to fix it.

A fun way to change this up is to have them hit a button or whatever to choose to spell the word, if they get it right they get a point but if they get it wrong they lose a point.

A fun quiz would be to have Riley name the spell effect and have them guess the spell names. Especially for really obscure spells.

I thought I had watched every single J vs Ben Harry Potter video, but I'm somehow just discovering this one. I have no idea why it was never recommended to me when it first came out. It's a rather unique concept compared to all the others.

knowing how to spell a spell is key in properly performing it, as it is one of 2 incantation-based indicators of the spell's success - spelling and pronunciation. the other indicator of success is clear intent. Which is why some spells fail even when performed by a skilled wizard...

As a native italian speaker who studied latin at school for like 8 years this is so funny! Never considered Harry Potter spell's names and pronunciations a challenge. And fun-fact: most of the names are latin or greek based, so actually the pronunciations you're used to hear in the movies are not really on point. Example: Draco means dragon in latin (from draco-draconis), and it's DrAco, not DrEco. Anyway, been watching this challenges A LOT these past months and I love this format and how passionate you both are 💞 thank you for keeping me company!

I'm sure they pronounce them following English phonetics. It's not like Harry had to learn Latin.

Hey, interesting video and I learnt a nice bit of etymology, but what's with the strange turn-taking, I don't think most British schools do spelling bees, mine certainly didn't. So I was a bit lost as to why words were not being posed to one person first and then the next word to the other. Sometimes multiple words in a row were being given to the same person first.

Better way to play this is, would have been to give them the definition of the word and they have to guess the spell for a point and spell it correctly would be for 2 points. and still have the steal part of the game in as well.

You could make this more difficult by having to guess the spell first. Like Tyler gives the disctiption of the spell and Ben/J have to guess the spell. If it sounds correct, they have to spell it. You could even give points to the guesser

In the Chamber of Secrets PC videogame and movie the spell Rictusempra doesn't have the same effect it has in the book. In both the movie and the videogame it is used as a minor offensing charm that causes the target to be knocked backwards.
