I love when someone can be off the cuff, unrehearsed, lucid, cogent, heartfelt, genuine, thoroughly appreciative without fawning, engaging, idyllic, guileless, funny, and brief all at the same time in an acceptance speech.

Estelle Getty won her best supporting comedy Emmy the following year (1988), along with Bea Arthur for the Golden Girls. 1987 was the year of the flub. Bruce Willis messed up Jackee (Jackay) by calling her Jackie. Likewise, Howie Mandel called fellow winner Rue McClanahan “McCalahan”.

People don't understand how historic this win was. Harry was the first - and still only - African-American actress to win an Emmy for Best Supporting Role in a Comedy. She proved a woman can be beautiful, black, *and* funny, without having to sacrifice either of them to achieve success in the industry.

She played the hell out of her role as vixen Sandra Clark. With that walk, them big hips and those dresses she was my second TV crush (after Janet from Threes company of course…lol). The 227 show wouldn’t have been the same or lasted as long without Jackėe Harry.
@jhead2007
@jhead2007 2 года назад
@Angel Johnson Bernadette was definitely more beautiful and a dancer she just wasn't asked to carry her role like Jackée was. Harry literally had to pull off a sexy but funny AND independent young D.C "mack mama". That's not easy to do and she did it masterfully. Other than being the show's subtle eye candy Stanis' role as Thelma was overshadowed by the supporting cast...especially Jimmy Walker putting her on the same tier as her little brother.

That’s incorrect. Gail Fisher was the first black actress to win an Emmy in 1970 for her role in “Mannix” in the Supporting Actress - Drama category. Several other black actresses won Emmys prior to Jackeé. Jackeé was, however, the first black actress to win the Emmy in the Supporting Actress - Comedy category, but Marla Gibbs was the first to be nominated.

I don't think it was anything personal against Jackée. This was Duffy's fourth consecutive nomination for _Newhart_ (1984, 1985, 1986, 1987). She would go on to receive three more nods but never win (1988, 1989, 1990).
