I was on the fence about buying one and decided to just say, what can I lose at MSRP. Man, holy crap what a delicious and surprising whiskey. I love Aberlour and Redbreast, two Sherry finished whiskies, but this is without as doubt a chocolate bomb like you said. I have found that my palate really aligns with yours, and not with Fred Minnicks. I think in his short video he essentially said this was garbage. Keep up the awesome reviews Jason.

Fred Minnick's palate is off so many times. He loves 'Corsets Whips and Whiskey', a Michigan distillery. I have tried 2 bottles of it and it is horrible. However, this bottle is delicious! Just as described by this video. Keep up the good work!

It’s one thing to pay secondary for a rare bourbon in a world where all rare bourbon is on secondary. It’s a whole new level of craziness to pay $500 for an American single malt that retails for $70 when there are virtually no other single malts that go for a crazy secondary price

Man do I want this. Thank God we can come here for an honest review from someone who drinks whiskey styles outside of sweet corn and sweet rye! Please do an ASM video. I think these distilleries deserve more attention! Have you discussed that Dickel 17 CS release on your stream yet? Saw it yesterday for $250, which is MSRP. How is their 13bib $50 and 8° higher?!? 🤘🥃

I am really happy on the definition of American Single Malt being a Scotch drinker. This gives a good category for the distillers to work with and play with without restraints. Really like Balcones and Stranahan, so will hope to find the Jack Daniels and try that.

@@brendankim i agree completely! I like scotch, but i have yet to have one with anywhere near the oak influence that bourbon has. Interested in trying some american single malts, but havent gotten to it yet.

Scotch and Irish HAVE to be aged longer in order to pull flavor from the typical already-used barrels their whisk(e)y is aged in. Plus their climates do no favors towards the aging process. Finally, the juice is usually bottled at a relatively low proof compared to many American bourbons/whiskeys. Scotch isn’t my bag, like Irish, albeit easy drinking, and absolutely love a good, high-proof bourbon/American whiskey. That said, no way will I pay a stupid amount of $ some crooks are asking.

I agree 100% with your review. I am definitely getting a solid core of Jack Daniels with all of the fruits and spice complexity surrounding that. I just hope the banana note stays where it is and doesn’t get stronger. I am really liking it at the moment. My bottle is 106.5 proof.

I picked one up in New Jersey for $299 Yes it was expensive I wanted the bottle. Is it worth $299 probably not but what the heck. It is a very very good pour.

If I find it at MSRP sure but if I saw it for 500 dollars I’d never shop at that store again. The secondary market is out of control. I see more people trying to sell their finds for ridiculous amounts of money. Big scotch fan so this is something I would be interested in.

I’m very glad I tasted this at a bar. It was not for me. It tasted like a Moon Pie but made with bitter dark cocoa that overwhelmed my palate.

I am hoping the barrel proof will squelch the evergreen playdough note I get from many low proof American Single Malts. I've tried to stay domestic but I'm a scotch guy. I'm also hoping the "regulations" allow for all the creativity we can thing of.. And if you like peat and smoke, Del Bac and Colkegan are rocking it in The South West

Had the bottle in my hands but passed on it because of the price $170 doesn't seem that bad now but wasn't sure what I was getting. It was around here before the reviews came out. Its was a lot of money for this time of year on something I never tried before . with the van winkle bottles still not here in mass wanted to leave as much funds available for those.

Interesting to see this. As a bourbon ye heavy consumer, I am working my way into Scotch, Irish and Single malts. Recently tried a Stranahan's on recommendation and while a very different experience, have been enjoying that journey and profile. Wondering if you have had any experience with Stranahan's and how you think this profile compares. Thanks for the great content and love the "Did you know" addition. Cheers!

Some people rushed to buy the new bonded bottles from JD and paid stupid prices. Now it's plentiful on the shelves by me. If I see this at SRP I'll consider it. Otherwise I'll wait.

I tend to stay away from the Jack stuff cuz of the backbone that you describe. Not that I don't like it just don't see how paying the extra money makes sense. Sipping the Tripple Mash now. Other than being 100-proof tastes like Gentleman Jack..

I'm not really a fan of American Single Malt being defined as only barley. Malting is a process. You can malt corn and rye etc. Why create restrictions upon yourself?
