Super interesting. Love that whole 'This is important' sign. It's so easy to come up with reasons to not do something - no time, no money etc. But at the end of the day it's important to remember WHY you do what you do and that it is important to do it and not make excuses.
The Pink Panther movies are my FAVOURITE! I adore Peter Sellers as Clouseau I love how Russell and Ryan ended up working together. What a funny story Filmmaking is all about adapting and problem solving. (And CA$$$H) What a great message to end on though Just do it!
This was great! Glad you kept it 16 mins. Some brilliant, practical advice, and it has made me sit down with the blank page this evening. I loved "you owe it to yourself to be playful".
I'm obsessed with the little bit at the beginning and end, no wonder you put it in twice. With something as abstract as writing a script, it sometimes feels very hard to justify prioritizing it over 'real' things, and I think it's very significant that Shane shared that the piece of tape said "this is important," if not just to remind himself of what it will become
definitely going to watch this a thousand times once all my exams are over because it's 100% going to motivate me to write and make some stuff in the summer
I really needed to hear that, I've been saying I'm going to write a book for years and have always started and never taken it anywhere. It's time I remind myself what is important.
Most definitely, the advice I took to heart the most was the same as yours, Jack. I am not a filmmaker or aspiring filmmaker (at the moment, who knows in the future since RU-vid has become such a prevalent and important influence in my life), but I am a writer and poet who has always SAID I am going to write a book (but never gotten past basic character and plot ideas). I have access to a computer. I am fortunate enough to have fully functional hands and fingers. I just need to start typing. Great video, man.
I really needed this. I'm making a no budget, feature length, British, teen comedy to try and get a scholarship and this has pushed my inspiration for creating and writing. Cheers Jack
What Joel Silver had to say about the size/budget of a project not mattering - that it's still all about relationships between people really resonates with me!
This was so interesting. There is something about listening to people talk about what they're passionate about that makes me really happy and inspired.
I liked all of the aspects of this. As a person who's beginning to write again and study film more intensely, I especially resonated with the end bit that, "THIS IS IMPORTANT" was posted on his typewriter; sometimes you need to prioritize your work and trudge through the slow moments where creativity isn't bursting through in order to get there. Great content Jack : )
You said 'finish-Jack-Dean' quite fast and so my heart sort of stopped. Then I put the pieces together and reassessed what you actually said- all is fine with the world again haha! So happy I watched thist Jack - so so interesting!
Absolutely loving these longer chats about filmmaking. Feeling more and more inspired everytime I watch your videos and being a filmmaker myself, it really inspires me to wanting to be better and continuing doing what I love!
Absolutely love these kinds of videos! The "just do it" bit was ever so helpful, all the notes of ideas on my phone very rarely turn into scripts because of fear so. Thank you :)
Please put up your video with Danny Boyle soon - I found this video so useful and interesting that I'd love to hear what one of my favourite filmmakers would have to say. I especially like how you are clearly asking questions you actually want to ask, all the nitty gritty how you actually make art as a practical thing. Love this sort of stuff, so always happy to see more.
More and more I find myself thinking about film, so I'm really enjoying watching videos like these to try and understand how it all works and the creative process! thumbs upppp!
So wonderful seeing how passionate you are about your craft - and it's definitely taken you places! Those are some big names! Would definitely love more videos about the creative process of filmmaking.
great video watched the whole thing really liked the feel of it. as an aspiring creator the just do it was just what I needed today. love what you're doing jack!
This was fascinating and really encouraging. I loved what he had to say about working your way out of the fear, found that really comforting for myself as I'm also suffering from a fear induced creative block. More long form film-makey content please!
Jack, you're a really awesome interviewer. I mean you can compliment without but-kissing, look actually engaged and interested and have good questions, good job! I'd definitely watch more
Absolutely loved this interview. Hearing how all these things come together to make something creative and awesome is the coolest thing. Can't wait to go see The Nice Guys this weekend. Would love for you to do more videos regarding film and creativity and definitely wanna see that Danny Boyle interview!
I have script or story ideas in my head for months sometimes before I've written a single page, just because I want to make sure it's not a bad idea. But that places so much more pressure on it once I start working, it's nice that the feeling of fear and terror is felt by even people who have already proven their talent. Great video!
I don't make films but just today I was thinking about the book I want to write, and Jack said like just do it don't fuck about. I'm not gonna fuck about. It'll take at least 10 years for me to write because I'm not a driven person so I should start sooner rather than later
I wasn't sure going into this video, as I'm not very into films, but you picked some really interesting questions and seeing how passionate and fascinated you all are by the subject really brings this to life. Thank you :) Also v cool life experience moment, probably not the worst day to file into the memory banks..
Loved this!! Loved their advice and the discussion that ensued. I'm an aspiring author but i really enjoyed listening to everything discussed in this video. Thanks Jack!
this video is amazing jack! a very inspiring video for your audience and aspiring filmmakers out there to pursue their dream with a bit more information a experiences from professionais. you should do more of this content! *seal of approval*
Loved it Jack! I myself am going through a kind a (I guess you could call it) fear state of mind on making films, and this really helped I think. Great videos as usual!!
Jack, I love all your videos where you discuss creativity, social issues, life etc. I really enjoy your perspective and I think it would be great if you brought in other creative types or people to have these discussions with!
I loved this! it would be nice if you could do more of this :) that message at the ending got me motivated to do stuff. Well, time to write a movie I guess
That was very inspiring and interesting to watch! I feel much more motivated to write a book that I am planning to write for some time. And also - Jack, you are a great interviewer :) I would love to hear from you more about movies and the process of writing. Good luck in future projects!
I'm not a film maker, but I loved this video. The message at the beginning and end is applicable to anything to do with making something and writing and I find the film making process really interesting and would love to do it if I could re live my options. maybe I'll take the message to heart and start writing - but I really enjoyed hearing the process irrespective of the film though it sounds fantastic. look forward to more videos specifically on the process of making a film!!
Oh my goodness, the fear. It's comforting in some strange way to hear that the fear never leaves. I left work just over 2 weeks ago to pursue a career in acting. Obviously a super crazy move and I started out really well - loads of auditions and a few job offers but for the last 3 days I've just sat and been too scared to do anything and too scared to not. It's been a weird old time and I'm glad to hear that I've just got to do it!
absolutely love seeing you talking about movies, Im learning a lot from the vidos you make. I love Film talking, but I have noone who will be as passionate about them as me. I can relate to a lot of what you are saying and asking, totally would like to see you talking more about movies. I mean, if you'd like to that'll be pretty cool :)
This was fantastic to listen to. Very insightful.. Just hearing how the process and fear in creating doesn't change even for big name writers and producers is very reassuring in a way. It makes me feel I could get to their level or better yet my own level some day. I feel inspired to create something..
this is a great video. it's made me think about doing and trying some things in different ways. Very charismatic and clear speakers too; when Shane was giving his "touch bottom" advice it felt like he was looking through the camera right at me...
I really loved this & I related to the same thing as you jljack. I find it hard to just do things because I'm afraid it won't be good or I don't know what I'm doing. I always forget to just start, to just try and see where it takes me because of that fear. Would love to see more stuff like this!!
