The initial hit by Arvidsson made contact with Hughes' arm, and the follow through ultimately hit his head because Jack had lowered his body. Not a dirty hit at all by Arvidsson, nor do I believe he had any dirty intentions. He's not that kind of player, and this was his first game of the season coming off of back surgery. As for the breakaway for Hughes, yes, it should've been a penalty. It looks like the stick of Arvidsson does get into the gloves of Hughes, and that's a hook. No doubt about that. I'm not surprised that it wasn't called though, as the officiating in this game was terrible overall. A plethora of phantom calls and no calls plagued this game for both teams. It was a pick and choose kind of night for the referees. Case in point, Hughes not getting a penalty (or a 10 minute game misconduct) for throwing his broken stick on the ice afterward. The most important takeaway from this game, is that Jack is immature, and still has some growing up to do. His attitude was not something you want to see from a leader. He's still young though, so hopefully he grows out of that naturally over time.
This trend of players trying to duck a hit to draw a penalty is ridiculous. Putting yourself in a bad position should never draw a penalty. How do you complete a hit when the opponent has his head three feet off the ice?
I just don’t get it dude… if you’re Hughes, just drop your god damn gloves. That’s exactly what I’d do. I’d lose every fight but nobody is running me without dealing with a retaliation, plain and simple. Kids too soft.
Hughes is a talented offensive player, but is still hot garbage defensively and on face offs. And let’s be clear, not a single player in the NHL is physically intimidated by Hughes.

Are some of you people kidding me!!! Where in that hit is anything dirty??? Little Miss Sunshine Hughes seen him coming, so he decides to duck down instead of just taking the hit to make the play!!! Then the color commentator says it should have been a 4:00 elbowing penalty!!! Our country’s sport is going to shit!!!! You can’t even make a nice open ice hit anymore without the other team, coaches and fans coming apart at the seams!!! And then Hughes flat out gives up on the back check to give it the ref because superstar missed a wide open net!!! Then snaps his stick over the boards and throws it on the ice during the play because he is having a fit like a 4 year old. Good guy to wearing a letter on his jersey. What a joke!!!
& don't bend down expecting a hit, too used to being made the pin-up NHL boy & believing his own hype!! Only time he drops the gloves into his box in the changing rooms.
Refs know what he's all about. The more he whines the more they look the other way. Sorry, it's hockey. He has to re-evalutate his attitude out there. Great skill but piss poor perspective.
an elbow to the head is supposed to be an automatic 5min major and game w/ejection, refs showing favoritism for Kings by not making the call; also holding /hooking by Kings' player on break away out of box, again refs favoring Kings player

I was there. Refs were pure steaming BS the entire night. Intentional elbow to the head and the player receiving the penalty gets called for coincidental 2. Garbage officiating the entire game.

@bakersb2 "can't take a hit" Meanwhile back in reality, it was a dirty penalty, 2 minutes for elbowing to the head. Saying "but he ducked" is not only totally erroneous but childishly foolish-on-purpose. The Refs , like you, blew all night long. Jack has every right to be upset with garbage officiating.
the officiating was BS for both sides. Jack should have been given a game miscondact for the the broken and thrown onto the ice stick. Devils got 5 PP, more than the Kings. Whats the problem? Maybe the problem is that the Devils are useless on the PP. Had Jack scored on the wide open net nobody on the Devils side would have even complained about Jacks tantrum.@@yoholmes273
Tbh the first one is fair, there's no height excuse for Arvidsson to hit him that high and the Devils should have been on the PP in some respect. But stopping in the middle of play to complain to the ref is unacceptable even if they blew a call. It's just not a good look
I THINK if they're both incidental for the same thing it's 5on5, if its two individual penalties it's 4on4. I could be totally wrong lol. For example if two guys are both roughing up each at the same time after the whistle it's 5on5 but if a guy elbows another and then later that play got a high stick to the face it'd be 4on4. To me it makes sense, I haven't read the rule book and I'm not a ref lol.
Not a fan of either team... But ChasingtheBiscuit sure is showing some bias with that title lol the dude had every right to be furious with the no call
He was pissed bc no PP on elbow to head and then no penalty when guy was draped all over him on the breakaway and then he missed the wide open net in a must win one goal game. That miss and being piased at himself was why he slammed his stick as much as anything else. Also: “People pay to see me play” was taken out of context. Right before that he said do you wanna get paid to hurt people?
