The lack of any action is why they cut title fights from 25 rounds to 20 rounds, to 15 rounds, to 12 rounds. They still last 47 minutes, which is enough for anybody. Watching boxers pace themselves for 45 rounds is a bit much.
Amazing over a hundred year old video. Sound did not come until the late 20's so this is original as was seen on movie reels at that time. All that generation is long gone but still lives here.
What is overlooked about Willard he had great stamina for a big man and usually older than his opponent, and he lived until 1968. He walked out of the LA hospital against doctors orders and died 12 days later, still did his way to the very end
At the time of this fight. WW1 was raging in Europe. men were dying by the thousands each day by a weapon not yet realized to be extremely effective at mowing down men in large numbers. (the machine gun) the airplane was a wonder of the modern age. the tank had yet to be invented. and their was not one Starbucks around selling over priced coffee.
On January 2, 1916, Johnson "confessed" to having thrown the fight. Johnson's confession was re-published in the October 1956 issue of The Ring magazine. This controversy was re-visited in the January 1969 issue. Johnson claimed that Curley told him that he had politicians working on his Mann Act case, and Johnson would be allowed to return to the United States if he agreed to throw the fight against Willard. Johnson's story was that his wife, who was sitting at ringside, was to receive a package of bills taken directly from the box office, and amounting to $50,000, which was to be his payment for throwing the fight in the 10th round. "But when that round arrived," Johnson stated, "the money had not been paid. It was nearing the 26th round when the money was turned over to Mrs. Johnson. I had specified that it should be in $500 bills so that the package should be small and the amount quickly counted. After examining it, she gave me the signal. I replied that everything was O.K. and she departed. In the 26th round, I let the fight end as it did."
Willard was no where near as skilled as Johnson, but he was huge and in shape, something Johnson obviously wasn't. You can tell by the way Jonson moves in the later rounds that he was gassed out. He just didn't have the will to train after his years in exile.
Plus, it's obvious that Willard had studied Johnson's style. Notice how their movements are almost mirror images of each other. There was no way Johnson could win given his lifestyle and age, as others have pointed out. Had he saved his money, he could have just retired and lived abroad to a ripe old age. the only thing that happened is that Johnson had a poor technique, but better than none, which was what most fighters had back in the day. That's why he defeated Jeffries, but couldn't handle Willard. And of course, when he lost he came up with all sorts of excuses. And he was still arrested by the Mann Act case five years later when he came back to the States.

Only giving one or two rounds to Willard, it was then in the 26th round, the money was turned over the Mrs. Johnson.......... This (old) giant, went on undefeated for another 10 years, definitely the greatest of the era.
Being able to move in and out of punching range seems to require quick and intricate foot movement and is probably what separates the better boxers from the rest of the pack. Johnson and Willard both seem to do this rather well, which is probably why the fight lasted 26 rounds.

Jack was so out of gas. Willard was manhandling him inside. That right hand was vicious, you can see Jack's head snap to the right before he falls. Homie was done fairly squarely. Makes Dempsey's dissection of Willard even more impressive.
The Willard who fought Dempsey- wasn't the same Willard who fought Johnson. Willard only defended the title once in the 4 years that he held it. He mostly fought exhibitions. He was overconfident against Dempsey- who was much smaller. You can see the difference in his conditioning when he fought Dempsey. He was soft around the middle. Compare him to his condition in this fight.
Dempsey hands were wrapped in bicycle tape which hardened when wet. In no other fight did Dempsey come close to inflicting the kind of damage that he unleashed on Willard. Willard was incredibly brave to keep fighting after that first round.
Give JJ credit for trying for 25 rounds but he could not outpunch Willard's reach and stamina. While Jeffries' crouch forward style was custom made for JJ's uppercut, Willard leaned back and used his reach to keep JJ off of him. Willard's style in this fight actually was very similar to JJ's.

When a basic amateur can beat a world champ, that champ is really lacking. Jack was unskilled and mostly fought smaller men. And he never gave a Black fighter a title shot after winning the title. Jess flat out kicked his ass. Jack hit Jess with everything and could not hurt him, Jack tried to manhandle Jess and could not. Jess was considered mediocre at best. Jess willard fought this one smart. He used the jab against jack, he didn't let johnson push him around like he was used to. Willard also was very good at locking johnson up, when he would charge him.
This is not the complete film but an extended version. Johnson tried mightily to put Willard away in the middle rounds but just could not do it. Once he took his best shot it was a matter of time. The younger stronger Willard slowly took over the fight with some big body shots. In the final rounds you can see it's Willard walking Johnson backwards in the clinches unlike the early rounds. In the final round Willard staggers Johnson with a brutal body shot at 33.21 that has Johnson holding on. After that shot Johnson refuses to lead and keeps his distance until Willard lands that fatal overhand right to point of the Johnson. Johnson latter admitted that punch knocked out a couple of his teeth.
This fight must have been a bit of shock for Jack. In previous fights and famously against Tommy Burns he was always the bigger and stronger man and could man handle his opponents at will. Watching this fight at the 33 min mark the boot is on the other foot with big Jess Willard pushing down on Jack and shoving him back with ease. His defensive style worked against him IMO, Jack Dempsey showed if your aggressive and put pressure on Willard and keep it up he didn't have the stomach for a hard fight.
Correct on Willard pushing Johnson, Big George Foreman utilized the same with Joe Frazier. Pushed him back and kept Joe's hook out of range, but in range for George's bombs.
@@devilface97 in terms of size Sam McVey and Jess Willard are worlds apart. McVey was 5'10"/11" at around 200 lbs whereas Willard was 6'6" at around 270 lbs. At the time Willard fought Johnson I can't see how McVey would have faired any better.
@@Freddie1980 mcvey was closer to 215lbs in his prime and brute strength was his best assets. Willard was 245lbs in his prime. They were closer in strength especially considering willards extra weight was never muscle mass especially when he got fat for Dempsey. He also refused to fight mcvey.
Johnson was old and out of shape, he had already won the heavyweight title and dominated every black and white man on the planet, it was just the passing of the torch. Nobody will remember Jesse Willard but everyone will always remember Jack Johnson.
If Johnson threw the fight, he decided to throw it after he entered the ring. You don't fight 26 rounds as hard as Johnson did if you intended to lose from the beginning.

He was the biggest heavyweight in history for a long time. You figure JJ was a shade over 6' tall and look how much bigger Willard was. I know many people still believe JJ threw this fight but look at the punch he took from Willard right in the jaw. 6'5" and 245pounds? Even if he wasn't the best boxer around he was very strong.
They could have counted to 100 and it wouldn't have mattered. You can make up any story you want, the film still ends the same way. In this day and age, I'm not sure why it would, but if it butt hurts you that a white man beat beat a black man, then don't look at any Marciano fights.
Johnson's "dive" story doesn't add up. Why fight 25 grueling rounds under the broiling Cuban sun before taking a dive? Johnson lost because he was 37 years old, was out of shape, and was fighting a guy who was younger, bigger, and stronger. The knockout was totally legitimate.
+scan Maybe "out of shape" was a poor description, but the Jack Johnson of 1915 doesn't look nearly as lean or sharp as he was in 1908 when he beat Tommy Burns or in 1910 when he beat James Jeffries. It was planned period. The white govt. Would reduce his sentence to only 1 year. Jack made sure to kick Jess Willard's ass before taking a dive. Please to say he was better than jack on true merit is a joke. In addition, he did not even train for that fight.
That is nonsense. Willard won fair and square. But Johnson fought well until then. He was getting tired, Willard spotted an opportunity and took it. In pure skill Johnson was the better fighter. Willard had youth and size going for him. In his prime Johnson was obviously better. But this fight was legit and the result was fair.
Boxing then hadn't completely evolved out of the bare knuckle era. So still a lot of emphasis on wrestling inside. No protective cup, no gum shield. Gloves were much smaller, no bandages, so less protection for the hands. Slow pace was necessary because of the fights length. 45 rounds compared to today's 12. Even Muhammed Ali could not have floated like a butterfly for 45 rounds in 105 deg heat. Ali's style would not have worked for this era, no more than Johnson's would in the 60's and 70's. But great champions for their own times.
@crembert85 Boxing has changed immensely. If you compare any fight today to the older fights you can instantly see the difference. Today's fighters and trainers learned and improved by watching the older fighters and trainers. In another 50 years time, boxing will have changed drastically again. Its not because of steroids and not solely because of improved training methods. Its because the experience, knowledge and technique of past boxers is passed on over the generations.

A high guard and combination punches do not work in bareknuckle fights or even early gloved matches. The high guard doesn't adequately protect the face in bareknuckle and repeated combination punches aren't possible in bareknuckle either because you'd break your hands. The guard in bareknuckle (left hand stretched outward if orthodox) was designed to parry and block diagonal punches because guarding close to the face doesn't work. However, diagonal punches in current ring boxing are useless and that's why the straight punch allied with combinations is what all fighters in ringed boxing use. What you're watching here is the transition from bareknuckle to conventional gloved boxing. At this point, fighters wore 4oz gloves so couldn't combination punch to the degree that they do now without hurting their hands and the 4oz gloves also wouldn't offer an adequate guard like a 10oz-12oz does. Place any champion from today, fighting in early 1900 or even up to 1915 rules or earlier bareknuckle and they'd be totally ill-equipped. The same is likewise. Boxing was a fundamentally different sport to what it is now.
Evander Holyfield once stated that if videotape had existed when Joe Louis was champion that there was no way he could have recorded 25 successful title defenses. Max Schmeling had access to films of Louis’ earlier fights and noticed that he dropped his left hand after a jab and used this knowledge to repeatedly nail Louis with hard right hands. Nowadays modern fighters can study all the fighters from the past on RU-vid which gives them a tremendous advantage, making comparisons between fighters of different eras essentially meaningless, as it would not be a level playing field.

Watching other Johnson fights, Johnson dealt with guys walking in (Burns and Jeff). Willard deserves alot of credit. He looked to be landing jabs and throwing a straight right. Defensive and durable as hell. That looked to be a huge right hand that landed flush. I've seen better recordings and some frame by frame with other opinions from a moderator.

Hey everyone, huge boxing fan here. I just want to know if anyone knows what became of Jack Johnson after this loss? As I research his bio on Wiki, I see that there didn't appear to be another heavyweight title fight in his boxing record. Was this because he wasn't given the opportunity to try to regain the title? Or was it simply because of the Mann Act? Someone please enlighten me I'm very curious!
Team Pour It Up Jack Johnson ended up surrendering to US federal authorities and did a year in jail. When he got out of jail he fought sporadically until the age of 50. Johnson died in a car crash in 1946. Jess Willard made one successful title defense then got a terrible beating from Jack Dempsey. Willard had a long life and died at the age of 87 in 1968.
Jack Dempsey refused to fight him. Don’t tell me that that matchup wouldn’t have sold tickets. Johnson was as deserving of a shot at Dempsey’s title as some of the other fighters who were given a chance. That would have been so epic.
Unfortunately for Willard, this victory created the myth that Jess was some giant killer, both in the public and Willard's mind. So, in 1919 he underestimated Jack Dempsey. Willard was a good defensive journeyman, not a great champion.

Jimmy DeForest claimed to have used a special kind of bicycle tape on Dempsey’s hands that hardened when saturated with sweat. When dry the tape did not appear suspect, so Willard, even though he personally inspected Dempsey’s hands being wrapped, had no reason to be suspicious. The damage to Willard was horrendous, far greater than any of Dempsey’s other opponents suffered.
Willard was a great boxer what are you on about? He only had 5 losses that is less than Johnson when he KOed him. Everyone underestimated Dempsey, he's famous for a reason he crated a new style an technic of boxing, hence why it's named after him. I mean have you never heard of the Dempsey roll? It's fundamental in boxing training now for throwing power into hooks. Just look at Mike Tyson he styled himself off Dempsey, if you need a modern look at the style. It's quite devastating.

basically, good old jack has bragging rights over all the greats before him, John L. Sullivan, James J. Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons, Sam Langford, Tom Sharkey, James J. Jeffries. He was the most hated in the sport, but I'm sure equally admired by some. I'm surprised they did not try to kill him, I'm surprised they actually paid him. One things for sure, they never gave him another title shot.

If age doesn't matter then Sugar Ray Leonard should be able to get in the ring and become a champion again. You're logic is flawed. When people reach their mid to late 30's their reflexes slow down as their brains are not the same as they once were. On top of that, if they take too many punches in their career the brain damage they accumulate weakens their skills. Roy Jones Jr. for example doesn't have the reflexes he once had. He isn't fast enough and can't react fast enough to fight at a high level. Many fighters say that they can see the punches coming, but can't get out of the way of them.

In the 12-round limit of todays championship matches, Jack would have retained his crown easily! In the 15-round limit of earlier times, Jack would have retained his crown easily! Going 20+rounds outdoors, under a blazing hot sun with temperatures at 100+ at ringside, was a bit much for a fighter close to 40-years old. Those were tough times that bred tough men! They did not have the benefit of modern day luxuries we enjoy today. Such as air-conditioning, modern medicine, plenty of food for all, subsidized living, television. All of these listed things have soften us as a people. The people of Jack Johnson's time were a tough sturdy lot, better moral character than we have today, look at how they dressed back then. Suits for men and dresses for ladies was the norm for going out in the public. Oh yeah, in today's world, Jack would have defeated Williard easy!

Not to mention that a lot of those fighters had regular jobs as they could not sustain themselves financially just by fighting. This was true even in the 1960’s. Joe Frazier once defended his title against a bagel salesman who went to deliver bagels to stores after getting knocked out in the first round.

Johnson would get destroyed by most boxers today, first off he is average to small by modern size, being 6'2 and 215lb that is more a cruiser weight. Second Tyson Fury would completely destroy just about every previous champion. There are a few who would be good fights, but most wouldn't stand a chance. Fury is arguably the most skilled heavyweight champion of all time as well as the largest. At 6'9 and 270lb he is already several weight classes larger than even most heavyweights from the 80s let alone the early 1900s. You really think Johnson would be able to win against modern boxers like Joshua, Wilder, Pulev, Ruiz and Uysk? Don't be foolish.

He literally was just a big boxer, he would have been schooled by the likes of Tunney or Greb had they fought. If you want a former black champion who would arguable do well today you should look up Joe Louis, the fact you ignore how much better he was compared to Johnson shows your bias. You want to hype up the man simple because he's black, he want even the best black fighter of the day he ducked all of them.

I think the most interesting thing about the fight its contrast to a modern approach: The fighters don't circle--they either advance or retreat, and they are quite hesitant and leary. Neither fighter punches from a good stance--they simply jab and slug. Apparently Willard wore Johnson out.

Look at Jack Dempsey, these moderns guys would call him unsophisticated by today’s standards, yet in his book there is much forgotten knowledge of the sweet science. For example the falling step, how many fighters you see today utilizing this simple but highly effective technique? Look at the art of shifting, largely forgotten except for GGG. The art of in fighting like Henry Armstrong and Roberto Duran, with exceptions like Andre Ward and sometimes Floyd Mayweather, its largely forgotten too. See all this talk that boxing now is much more advanced, if a little scrutiny is made in these claims, as I have done, it shows just how inaccurate these guys are. Old School was and is the best. Modern Day Boxers are like University Professors, good, taking nothing away from them, but the Old School Boxers were like Da Vinci and Einstein. That’s the truth.

Pretty dull fight,... Willard is very big and very strong, certainly knew how to box, fundamentally o.k., but slow with almost no offensive skill. No wonder Dempsey destroyed him so easily. Johnson is well passed his prime here, and it was very hot, fight should have only gone fifteen rounds anyway.
I disagree Willard looks decently nimble for a big guy. He was jabbing throwing the right to the body and head. He looked like he could throw full bodywieght behind his punches. Willard got koed by Dempsey because Dempsey was to nimble and smart enough not to get clinched while he punched. Dempsey was also using alot of upper body movement and lateral movement to make Willard re position.

JJ very impressive in his battle for civil liberties. However, when it came to boxing. He was highly overrated. After winning the Hwt championship he never gave another Black fighter a title shot. No doubt because he lost to many of them. Second after winning the title, he defended it against mostly smaller, much smaller men. Today they would be Middleweights and Lt Heavies. His lack of skills showed up when he fought a man who was 4 years younger, and boxed as a hobby, Jess W. His first match against a man his own size, and he got his ass kicked easily. Jess followed a great plan and with 1 well placed punch ended the fight. The Bully got Bullied.
@@SimplyThatGuy12 Jack was 4 years older than Jess, 4 years! If Jack was passed his prime so was Jess. Jess also boxed as a hobby, he was a farmer full time, and started much later than Jack. They were pretty much the same age. What puzzles me is if Jack was such a great fighter where were the skills? For the first time in his career, he fought a big man and got his ass whipped. It was not close, Jack could not man handle Jess like he did the smaller men. And if you see at the end of round 16, Jess patted Jack on the shoulder, some felt he was letting Jack know there was no way to win. Jess had a brilliant strategy and followed it to the end. And with 1 punch ended the fight. Knocked cold, by the man who like Jack was out of his prime, hell, he never had a prime,LMAO Jack just did not have the skills.............
