No doubt that Jack Lord set a very high bar for Steve McGarret, but the reboot McGarret's character is the polar opposite and it "works". He is Mcgarret gone rogue. Not fair to compare the two, because they play the character different and in different times.
Give that man a prize. He had the looks, the swagger, and the gaze that would strike his enemies to the bone. I think that’s why people thought that he was so hard to get along with. He was blunt and to the point, but he said what needed to be said when others didn’t. We need more John Joseph Patrick Ryans (aka Jack Lords) in this world. He probably would have made a great President.
@@11BravoGrunt Nah lol they got rid of him because he asked for more money and equal billing to Sean Connery. To which they said a polite f you and replaced him with someone cheaper
@@fmagalhaes1521 I don't think so. There are all sorts of myths knocking around about feminism. Apparently a feminist will screech: "Don't hold the door for me!!" when a man extends common courtsey. I'm a feminist and I say "thank you" in such situations. I have never known another woman - let alone feminist - pull that kind of thing. It just doesn't happen in reality and you must always wonder about the agenda of someone pushing that myth. In 1964, they didn't have the strict social decorum they had in Victorian times. Everything gets diluted and looser with the passing of time.
Reese Morgan I have encountered the “door situation” that you mentioned. Also, I was around in 1964, so I got to see the Liberation movements and ERA campaigns first hand. I do appreciate your perspective, so I gave your comment a like.
I remember watching Jack Lord as the star of a TV series in the early 60s called "Stoney Burke"; he was pretty good in that role as an itinerant rodeo rider, as I remember.
Jack Lord looked much better in suites than his 1970’s informal attire on Hawaii Five-O 😂. Mr. Lord is still Steve Margaret, even before it was filmed!!!!
Felix Leiter was played by Jack Lord in Dr. No. He also insisted on having locals from Hawaii on the product staff for Hawaii 50, Most if them had to learn on the job. He also left the money he made from Hawaii 50 to the people of Hawaii.
Watching this in 2019 really makes you feel like you missed the party. Living in the 21st Century sucks. -"Doc Brown! - you got that DeLorean time machine finished yet?!"
I'd hop in that De Lorean and head back to the 50s in SoCal when it was paradise. Disneyland was in orange groves, Simi Valley was walnut groves, and in San Fernando Valley you could smell the honeysuckle, magnolias, and orange blossoms. The people were laid back and kind to each other. San Francisco was a jewel in the crown of cities. The ladies put on their hats, gloves and string of pearls with their dresses to go shopping. Yosemite was an amazingly beautiful place to visit and you had most of it to yourself. San Diego was a sleepy little city with beautiful beaches. I miss the 50s.
The film mentioned deserved the award. That's for sure. It was a work of art. Two years earlier Revue pictures had heavily adapted the Ambrose Bierce short story into a good short film on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, but this version by the French pair was truly stunning for a 20 minute short subject. Sticking to the original story but with no narration and only background voices of the soldiers. Look for it.
The first Felix Leiter in the James Bond franchise movies, in Dr. No. He was replaced after because producers were concerned his good looks were too challenging to the star Sean Connery, who they wanted to catch on with the public so they could get their series of movies going.
Fascinating footage ! Thanks for sharing ! I recall seeing that short subject i("Occurence on Owl Creek Bridge") in junior high in an English class, back in the early 70s
Jack Lord was a very talented actor. History tells us that he was originally chosen by Gene Roddenberry to play the captain of the star ship enterprise, something he declined because Roddenberry didn’t want to split the show in two. That part was eventually given to William Shatner. Rumors say he wanted part ownership in the TV show. I’m almost sure he was given part ownership in Hawaii 5-0, one of his conditions to performing on any TV show.
That never happened. Jack didn't want to do Star Trek at all. Gene Roddenberry lied about Jeff Hunter being fired from the second pilot, so it's too hard for him to lie about Jack.
@@vrinda5303 Everything I've heard from various sources, including those who are experts on the history of Star Trek, verify that Jack Lord was offered the role of captain of the Enterprise for the second pilot, but he did want a share of the show. Roddenberry wasn't going to share. And Jeffrey Hunter wasn't fired. He turned down the opportunity for a TV series to return to films instead with strong encouragement from his wife.
AN OCCURENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE, the film that won best live-action short film Oscar, was actually aired on CBS that year (1964) as an episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE. And yes. Jack Lord was as decent a man as one could ever hope.
