Harpsichord keys and jacks: • Harpsichord keys and j...
making 3/8 " x 3/16" pear wood jacks for 17'th century harpsichord.
What I most enjoyed in making this instrument was cutting the jacks and key blanks from wooden boards that bore no resemblance to what they became.
Sawing the key blanks seemed a less laborious task than cutting and smoothing the jacks to accurately glide in their register grooves.
*By the way: whenever I see the longish black triangle with the thin white holly tongue that holds the plectrum that plucks its string I've been wanting to make certain that anyone who might be puzzled by that black triangle knows that it highlights the white holy tongue to make it more visible than if were photographed on naturally colourless wood.
Voicing plectra inserted into the Holly tongues. • Harpsichord Voicing

Depending on the harpsichord manufacturer and era, jack dimensions vary in width and height.

Hello Philip: I've noticed your Hubbard harpsichord photo and wondered if you are aware or a Mathew Redsell copy of a French harpsichord. I saw it by chance somewhere online . Peter De Remigis

Did you punch a slot for the plectrum, or did you saw it from the edge. Traditionally they were planed to thickness. I guess they could be sawn or by a sanding thicknesser

Holly is soft enough to endure the punch without splitting. Sorry I'm late; Peter

@@DEREMIGIS If the grain of the tongue is going from top to bottom there will be very little, if any splitting. If the grain is going left to right, there will be a lot of splitting.
