Proving Ground is one of my favorite episodes of Stargate SG-1, and Lt. Elliot is probably my favorite minor character in the whole series. I loved how he fought, failed, and finally won Jack’s grudging respect. (And then three episodes later, my heart gets broken.)

I really wish Elliot/Lantash had survived and been a character on Stargate Atlantis like originally planned.

I hate the way he died. They depicted him as the great leader and soldier and you really believed it, but his death was so stupid and the sacrifice was unnecessary.

Not really: they never would've escaped if he hadn't poisoned that army.

At least it wasn't killing himself just before turning 25, like Atlantis...

Looks like a pretty good episode. It just so happens to be one of the few I missed.

Of the 4, the Asian girl (can't remember her name) and Hailey are never seen again, Elliot is dead and Grogan appeared once in season 5.

@@heathermakesthings5499 Yeah. Elliot reappears in a 2-parter where he becomes the new host to Lantesh. Long story. Neither survive though. Grogan returns in an episode near the end of the season called the Sentinel. Features the return (sort of) of the rogue NID guys O'Neill busted in season 3 though they replaced the characters from that episode with different ones.

@@heathermakesthings5499 Beginning of season 5 huh??? Hoo boy. Well good news: Apophis really IS dead this time. He only ever appears again through alternate timelines and stuff like that. He's not coming back from the dead again. I know he has a bad habit of that, but I promise you that's over for good. Season 5 introduces a new main enemy: Anubis, a powerful and ancient Goa'uld System Lord that's far worse than ANYTHING they've ever encountered before. He's half-Ascended so he's pretty much impossible to kill. He's defeated for good in season 8 but in a rather unique way. He's gone but not actually dead. It also turns out that the Ascended beings are actually the Ancients, the builders of the Stargates. Orlin Carter's love interest a few episodes into that season??? He's an Ancient though no one knows that until Daniel discovers a tablet on Abydos revealing the truth at the end of season 6. That tablet starts the search for the Lost City of the Ancients better known as Atlantis. That season also introduces another recurring System Lord named Ba'al. Mid-season 2 parter when Daniel goes to a Goa'uld Summit to assassinate them all but stops upon learning of Anubis' return. Also, because he encounters Osiris there still using Sarah Gardner as his host. They do eventually manage to save Sarah fyI: they capture Osiris on Earth in season 7 and the Tok'ra remove him from Sarah. Neither are ever seen again although Osiris is presumably dead. Anyway, one of the System Lords is Ba'al who becomes the most recurring SG1 villains basically. He's in the show from seasons 5 to 10 and in the last SG1 movie Stargate Continuum. He's a brilliant scientist and manipulator and Earth actually allies with him a few times for mutual benefit such as destroying the Replicators forever. Ba'al is the one System Lord to hold onto any sort of real power and in seasons 9 and 10 appears mainly through a series of clones enacting his various plots. In Stargate Continuum after the last clone is captured, the real Ba'al rewrites history so that the Stargate never reached America. He planned to sink it in 1939 but that plan went wrong. Instead, it got stuck in the Arctic. Carter, Daniel and Cameron Mitchell (main character starting in season 9) manage to escape through the Stargate as the changes take effect and wind up in the alternate timeline. In the end, with the help of the alternate Teal'c, Mitchell manages to travel back in time to fix history though everyone else dies in the attempt. Mitchell finally kills the real Ba'al in 1939 when he first time travels and sets history back on course. The movie ends with the last Ba'al clone having his symbiote extracted by the Tok'ra which then dies, ending the reign of the Goa'uld System Lords forever.
