My dad used to run into him at a little Italian market near Eckley Village, PA - they'd both be in there buying the homemade kielbasa the place was famous for. They were both Ukrainians, and they'd talk and laugh about the old days. Dad said he was one of the nicest gentleman he'd ever met. RIP, Sirs.
I loved Jack Palance. My father looked like him at this age. I couldn’t believe it when Jack did the one armed push up at the Oscars. He was a rugged scary looking guy.
That wasnt long after this appearance on The Tonight Show. He did those one-armed push ups winning best supporting actor for his role in City Slickers. I remember watching it with my grandma and you could tell she was gushing prune juice if you know what I mean.
Exactly. Today we got whiny activists and people who slap others over a silly joke in our celebrity realm. The golden day's of Hollywood are truly gone.
His hired gunfighter role Jack Wilson, in Shane, was without doubt, the defining moment in any Holywood western. Mean, Menacing, and scared of no one. It was inevitable that the good character Shane, played by Alan Ladd had to triumph over evil, but that saloon scene. WOW
jack said his famous entrance with his terrifying skeletal grin was due to fear!He had never ridden a horse before! He credits great horseman Ben Johnson for giving him a crash course between scenes to get him through the movie!
@@anthonyharty1732 very like the climax of big jake where wayne reverses something richard boone said earlier to threaten him.wilsons words to elisha cooke are rephrased by shane to provoke the gunfight.palances riposte is simply superb.
Yes. The reason he died so much in movies, bad guy. Goes without saying, but I said it, anyway. He just had that menacing look about him. Best line in City Slickers, talking to Billy Christal; "I've shit turds bigger than you."
@@jubalcalif9100 wow 4 years later you replied to my old message. I forgot about this one :) Thank you and YES, he was a really good man and funny! I loved him in City Slickers!
Palance sits down and before the host can say a word, starts in on asking him something - completely owning the moment even though it's another person's show. Very few people nowadays have that sort of presence.
Always liked Jack Palance, probably 'cause he was a Pennsylvania coal miner before the war & many coal miners from my town in Cumbria left for those very collieries. Scranton etc. my relatives included, during the early 20th century.
There are very few films I like of his but this one I love. I didn't like many of the characters that he played but when he had a good part he was absolutely wonderful. Yet, I have enjoyed so many of his interviews or participation in game shows. He had a personality that was great.
one of my alltime Jack Palance movies is God's Gun with lee Van Cleef x2 and Jack just pure western Gold also had a young leif Garret in it also another Jack palance western gem was The Professionals with Burt Lancaster but one of my fave sci fi fave Jack Palance movies was GOR the counter earth story Jack played the Priestking and later on in Cyborg 2 with young Angelina Jolie and Elias Koteas Jack just rocks even as Dracula and a mobster in the 4 aces
Uno degli attori più cattivi di tutti i tempi ma anche uno degli attori più straordinari che il mondo del cinema abbia mai avuto. Bravo, bravissimo, unico.
Jack had such an easy comedic timing, but his greatest strength was as a super-menacing villain! I reckon it was great to see him joking it up with Leno so lightheartedly. He was the host of Ripley's Believe It Or Not for the first few seasons and he brought an air of class to what would otherwise have been a corny TV show. I couldn't get enough of him on that show and never missed an episode!
Another great actor with alot of movies he his from Pennsylvania up north that's were my mother was born I was born in queens new York he was a rugged actor to
"Play the gutless wonder, one more time Cooney & I'll ram this grenade down your throat & pull the pin!" ..... great line from Jack Palance in my favourite film in which he starred ...Attack!
Few here may have lived back in '68, but Jack did the television premier of the stage production of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde. I was just a kid back then, but his performance was indelible.
Strange to see Jay with dark hair ! Though sad that he doesn't seem to know much about Jack Palance's actual film career. But it doesn't faze Jack. What a classy fella & what a great sense of humor. Mr Palance should have done more comedies ! THANKS to sharing this cool clip with us !
Thats one scary dude and one of the best of the older generation actors, i use to live near the Baghdad café and boy is he famous there, the french love Jack Palance and they visit the Baghdad café all the time on tours there R.I.P.Mr. Palance.
Jack Palance played the lead in a American Playhouse production of Dr.Jekell and Mr.Hyde and he was truly terrifying...around 1968...I thought he did it better than Spencer Tracy and that took some doing...Great Actor
Thanks for your comment !! I recall as a teen watching that TV version of "Jekyl and Hyde' that the late great Mr Palance starred in ! The late great Mr Palance was an underated actor and a true icon !
It's FUNNY people like David Niven and Leno 'bounce' jokes off of JACK, but people don't always remember that PALANCE was Not only funny and Dramatic actor, but this man was a Boxer with like an 80-0 Record he KNOCKED other muscular fighters OUT COLD!! So there is not a thing of weakness with this man, he was as real as MR. T was a real Tooth Chipper in real-life not just on-screen like some of the 'actors' were then.
He's a proud American Ukrainian his father must of had brothers not only this Chuck Palahniuk the author of the Fight Club and Nick Palance a professional singer all these are distant cousins to Jack Palance. A former Heavyweight boxer in the 1940s with a good run only losing to Joe Bagsi through a TKO Joe punched Jack in the throat and unable to continue Jack said this is nuts getting bashed for 300 dollars is madness.
Never realized how big Palance was. Man was gigantic. leno is 6,2 like 220lbs. Palance dwarfs him. Vitali Klitschko looks like they could have come from the same family. Not only common Ukrainian ancestry, But Jack Parlance was a hell of a boxer in his day as well.
A great like Palance under the annoying specter of Jay Leno. NBC actually had a survey that said the sight of 'Leno scared children.' Palance knew he was tolerating a giant chinned light weight. I kept wishing Palance would have lifted Jay out of his chair and thrown him--chin first--into the fake plants. I think it crossed his mind.
I find I must agree with you. I was working all those years he was the Tonight Show host & had to go to bed early so I rarely watched him. But judging from this clip, he's not a very good interviewer at all....just seems to be interested in getting laughs. I always liked his stand up routines though !
Scott Miller They came from vastly different backgrounds. Watch an episode of What's My Line - Johnny Carson as guest (he may have been once) but he was a panelist many times. Carson spent years honing his craft on many different daytime NYC game shows, etc. plus he really was an honest to goodness natural. Emcee extraordinaire, interviewer, panelist, comedian and the list goes on. Leno was strictly an experienced stand-up comedian although he was very quick witted and funny. However, there is a vast gulf between the two and their skills set. I doubt we'll see another natural like Carson who is also willing to pay his dues to be at the top of his field. Nobody wants to do that kind of internship today. They're for the most part lazy and want fame overnight. Case in point, all these The Voice or America's Got Talent shows. Even network TV has yielded it's desire to craft good programming to cable. The times they have a changed.
