There's a podcast out called 'The Interruption' which gives a very compelling explanation of it and names a pirate radio DJ as the culprit. Unfortunately they passed away some time ago but I think it said something about a lot of pirate radio people believe he did it. Of course not 100% confirmed but an interesting and plausible explanation.
