Hi Guys, We have a lot of people ask us how to tell the difference between male and female jackfruit flowers. We were asking this same question recently and are sharing what we have learned.
This is the first year our jackfruit trees are producing female inflorescences. These grafted trees have been in the ground about 3 years now.
Are you growing jackfruit? We would love to hear about your experience growing jackfruit in the comment section below.
We sell grafted jackfruit trees! Send us an email if you would like to purchase one. sulcatagrove@gmail.com

Thank you for this clear explanation. I have 2 trees, 1 which started producing male flowers last summer, but no females. I thought they were just dying from Jackfruit rot and I couldn't get rid of it, so I almost cut them down, because I didn't know this information. I heard about jackfruit rot in videos and such, as well as the remedies (of which I tried but couldn't stop it), but in none of that info did they say anything about there being male and female flowers. I just discovered last month by accident that the males are supposed to rot, which saved my trees.

So happy this was helpful. Hopefully your tree will produce female flowers soon! It's very common to have male flowers only for the first year or two or flowering.

AlexBzh We haven’t noticed any issues with the flowers or developing fruit other than sometimes uneven pollination. Hand pollinating can help.

Is it possible to get a jackfruit tree to fruit indoors in a giant pot?
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 3 года назад
James Tropicals I suppose anything is possible with the right conditions (lighting, warmth, root space, nutrients, pollination). The trees can get quite large. It would definitely be a challenge. I haven’t heard of anyone fruiting one indoors before.

Pruning when it’s actively growing is best. Some varieties are less aggressive growers than others our Cristela seems to be a smaller tree.

@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 6 лет назад
Nugraha Science the male inflorescence will eventually have pollen which can look a bit like yellowish fuzz - then eventually it will often turn fuzzy and black before falling off. There is Rhizopus Fruit Rot - Rhizopus artocarpi which can cause the flowers and small fruits to appear fuzzy and then die. You can google for a picture.

Betawi people named it the male flowers of jackfruit, "tai babal" and the female flowers "pentil cecek". Betawi people use the male flowers as a mixture of "rujak bebeg" While female flowers of jackfruit are used as vegetable.

Is there any way to get more females on your tree than males? I've had several jacks for over 10 years now and they've all been producing only males, no fruit. :-(
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 7 лет назад
I'm not sure. Our tree only produced male flowers the first year bloomed. Our trees are all around 3 years old - only one has produced female flowers so far. This is the first year we have been doing regular nutritional sprays with kelp and fish emulsion. Not sure if that helped or if it was just maturity of the tree. 10 years is a long time without any fruit.
@threegreengenerations

I've used fish emulsion on them but not kelp, I'll have to try and see if it helps, thank you.

I live in Hawaii and my jack fruit tree is huge. Probably 15 feet tall. I have many jackfruits on the bottom of my tree, very huge. When will I know when there ready. Mostly brown and green. Do all JFs turn yellow when ripe? How tender does it need to be? Mine are pretty hard. Last time I cut one open that was not ripe and bitter I had zero seeds. What does that mean?
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 2 года назад
We wait until we can smell them before picking them. If wildlife is an issue, you can also wait until the leaf falls off the short stem and the stem turns brown. There is also usually widening between the bumps on the fruit.
@DQSH8999

@@SulcataGrove Thank you so much. I cut one open, it was not ripe, it had seeds! I also found a bunch of males producing seeds but only one female :( I spread the seeds! I will wait till I smell them, any idea how they smell? the widening was getting bigger and less pokey but it will still be brown and green and not ripe lol. ill be more patient for the other 7 huge bastards lol

@@DQSH8999 they smell sweet and a bit like juicy fruit gum. They will ripen on the counter. We always let them get a bit soft on the counter before cutting open, after cutting from the tree.
