Perhaps the best long day hike and mountaineering opportunity in Jackson Hole, Wyoming’s Teton Mountains and Grand Teton National Park. Starting at the String Lake trailhead, this trail heads up Paintbrush Canyon past Holly Lake and up to the Paintbrush Divide which reaches 10,700 feet above sea level. Then head over to the North Fork of Cascade Canyon and descend to Lake Solitude. Along the descent, amazing views of Lake Solitude, Mica Lake, the North Fork and the Grand Teton. Continue to the Cascade Canyon trail and head down Cascade Canyon. You arrive at Jenny Lake and hike along the lake back to the String Lake Trailhead. This hike was over 20 miles and boasts over 4,000 feet of elevation gain.

Thanx for posting. I wasn’t going to go to the Tetons until I seen this hike. Soooo glad I seen this. I did the loop but starting at cascade canyon & coming down paintbrush. Easy loop except coming over the divide, that kicked my butt but the view on top was a great break & chance to catch my breath back. Completed 8hr 34mins. Didn’t realize there are 5 diffent lakes. Absolutely recommend to all

The black bear population in GTNP was almost non-existent, and there were definitely no grizzlies in the park back then or I wouldn’t have gone it alone. The rugged beauty of this hike still blows me away! I look forward to watching your next adventure.

I did this hike in 1978 in my early 20's with a friend. We decided to take this hike casually without any planning had taken off without any water and 1 candy bar each! I did have a Pentax ME with 3 rolls of Kodachrome 25. We took the cascade canyon route into Lake Solitude and were hardly winded, and the views were just out of this world! Being so excited, we decided to do the loop back climbing up from Lake Solitude to the Paintbrush Canyon String Lake route. We were so dehydrated by the time we got back that to the car parked in the Jenny Lake parking lot that the only thing I remember vaguely is Holly Lake! I also remember drinking a whole 6 pack of fruit punch in 5 minutes. So much for being young.

This looks amazing and gets me even more excited for my road trip to GTNP. Were the trails obvious/obviously marked even at high altitudes when you had to scale some of the rocks? Only cause you mentioned the "sketch switchbacks." I have my AllTrails app but am a bit worried about heading in the wrong direction. Looking to start at String Lake in mid August up through Paintbrush Canyon and back down through Cascade Canyon pending I can make the 12 hour journey.

Loved the Video, Wife & I are going the GTNP in early June a couple questions, The snow belts that early are concerning whether the trail will be open for the whole loop, what brand Ice Axe and crampons do you use seem durable and effective, also do you save your hikes on Alltrails or anywhere so public can view for planning. Thanks for all the informative videos

Black diamond ice axes. We use an off brand version of Kahtoola ice cleats. We don’t save our hikes on all-trails but just post the videos. We have been up cascade in June and we were post holing a mile before lake solitude. I would wait til the end of July or August for the entire loop.

@nolanventures473
@nolanventures473 Год назад
This was in early August. May is way too early. Probably not passable until July, and that is a maybe. The ranger stations have good info because it all depends on the snowpack and it is different each year. Check with them but May is a no go for this hike. Paintbrush divide is over 10,000 feet. Thanks for watching and enjoy the trails.

@nolanventures473
@nolanventures473 3 года назад
You can access the loop from Jenny Lake. We started at sunrise and finished in about 10 hours. But we take our time. We typically do this hike in late July or august. We do this so the snow has a chance to melt. Doing it in May will be a challenge or not advised or impossible. The snow is deep and stays in places all year. Depending on your skill level it might not work that early. Check with the ranger station before you plan this hike. Enjoy the trails!

Can i ask why you dont wear hiking boots or shoes with better support? Especially when hiking on boulder fields and snow. I always have to wear a boot with ankle support and hard treads
@kimberlynolan2745
@kimberlynolan2745 3 года назад
Yeah, I think that's totally a personal preference. The trails in the Tetons are not what we would consider "rugged" They are well defined amazing trail systems. We have found that when doing long distance day hikes, the Hoka and Nike trail shoes we wear are fantastic to minimize fatigue and have surprisingly great support. Our ice cleats fit over our trail shoes easily also. If we are in a wilderness area without trails, then we wear hiking boots.
@nolanventures473
@nolanventures473 3 года назад
Agreed. Good trail shoes have great tread and are much more hiker friendly on long well established trails. If off trail, in muddy conditions, or lots of snow - then hiking boots are better. But I would always prefer top quality trail shoes over hiking boots if conditions permit. But it is personal preference.
@vickymastroianni8929
@vickymastroianni8929 3 года назад
Thank you. Why do you like the trail shoes better? Maybe i should try some. Oh and i enjoy these videos. Im headed to tetons on saturday.
@nolanventures473
@nolanventures473 3 года назад
Much easier to hike long distances in top-quality trail shoes. Over 15 to 20 miles it makes a huge difference. They typically fit better than boots, are lighter, less clunky, provide more cushion, just as much tread, and provide a more athletic fit. I have done long hikes in good boots and good trail shoes. I reserve boots for wet/snowy conditions and off trail.
@jamiewalters4
@jamiewalters4 3 года назад
It is definitely personal preference. I've backpacked and hiked hundreds of miles on trails including the AT, JMT, CT, as well as trails like this one including Medicine Bow etc.... trail shoes are 100% my go to. Many many years ago used to wear boots... no more. For me, trail shoes are without question superior. Lighter, as good if not better grip, dry faster when wet, and plenty of support. I wear Altras. Love em!
