When I began my journey, my endocrinologist vehemently forbade me from weighting anywhere but his office (I had monthly appointments). Besides measuring weight, he also had that equipment that measured exactly how much is fat, bone density, muscle mass, etc. And I think it helped A LOT knowing my weight once per month - I focused in how I was feeling, how my clothes were fitting better and didn't get paranoid with a number (my doctor told me that a lot of things could make your weight fluctuate - water retention, menstrual bloating, stress - that was why he was adamant). I managed to lose 18kg in 10 months without much suffering, just following the plan and focusing on how well I was feeling overall.

I just have to say that something really clicked in me from watching your videos. You’ve helped me realize that my problem with overeating is literally caused by under-eating. Jaclyn just recently got engaged. I'm *really* hoping we don't see a lot of "shedding for the wedding" kind of diet culture with extreme calorie cutting and exercise. What is supposed to be a happy time can easily turn into such a stressful period for a myriad of reasons. For those of us who are plus-sized brides, wedding dress shopping can be especially traumatic and frustrating. Here's hoping that doesn't happen for her.

I'm very glad I got married during the pandemic and wasn't "able" to go in to dress shops. Instead, I purposefully ordered a dress online that I knew was too big (and didn't let myself obsess over the number for the size) and then went to a seamstress to get it tailored. I really think that the traditional shopping process would have been triggering for me.

I have so much empathy for Jaclyn, her mental processes when it comes to the scale and obsessing over it is like looking in a mirror. I gained 40 lbs based on that "can't lose weight even though I'm trying, might as well give up and be fat" mentality. I just started trying to eat more intuitively and I can already say my mental health is doing a lot better.
@Ginmabes
@Ginmabes 2 года назад
The scale thing is an interesting issue. For me, I found looking at the number on the scale to be really helpful because it made it simply about data, and it took the emotion out of it. It was the pressure to feel good about myself that was causing me a lot of pain. When I finally looked at that number I thought "Okay, got it, I have gained a lot of weight, and I feel crappy about it, but that's okay. I will get that number down slowly." It allowed me to just get on with my routine without spending energy on trying to figure out my emotions and feelings about my body and weight which will always be complicated. (However, I understand that for some people, the scale is a complete no-no and causes immense stress and unhealthy obsession). Tricky!
@mackenzie1845
@mackenzie1845 2 года назад
Yeah, some people are more heavily affected by diet culture so when the number isn't going down fast enough or it fluctuates, plateaus, etc. they feel like a failure. Even though weight loss is complicated and not always linear. You just get stuck in that extreme diet culture (some times eating disorder) minsdet. I speak from experience here.

That's so interesting! I grew up without a scale in my home due to my mum's body issues and her trying not to pass them on, it was good not to have one but sadly mum still passed on her issues lol I definitely grew up with "X number is too fat it's disgusting to be that weight and it is not only large it's a personal failing" which, wow is that not how it works haha I am above the number of death now due to life but I love my body more than ever. I do get very triggered by numbers though, even though I know roughly what I weigh it's weird how deep rooted the diet culture stuff is, like it's objectively not how I think, but I feel it still.

I think one of the best things that's happened to me was losing my scale while moving. I was at the point where I weighed myself first thing in the morning, everytime I went to the bathroom and saw it, and every night before bed so I could compare it to the next morning. Then one day of last minute packing and it was gone and me, being cheap and scared, haven't bought a new one in the 4.5 years since. It took about 3 years to stop slinking off to my parent's scale everytime I was over, and I still struggle a bit with wanting to obsessively measure, but I don't get that chance to shame myself repeatedly on the scale.

@alicewonderland9160

It's actually pretty much the same for me. I used to obsessively weigh myself when I was still living at home. But moving out resulted in me not having a scale at home. Not being able to weigh myself every single day and see the number rise or fall is honestly making me feel a lot more comfortable with my eating choices. So I can focus more on how I feel instead of how much I weigh. When I was home over the holidays I did realize though how easy it is to get back into old habits.

Jacelyn’s situation is pretty relatable to most people. We try to lose weight and we track our process by numbers we see on the scale. Nothing wrong with that since the scale is a much more visible tracking method than perhaps say looking at muscle definition etc. But the problem comes when we get too reliant on it…… In my first year of college, I was also in the thick of the diet culture. I used the scale to track my “progress” and obsessively noted down my calories and the corresponding weight daily. Thinking it a number game, I cut back my calories to 800-900 per day refusing to go above 1300 to hit a deficit of at least 200-700 to ensure results. A punishing method but it delivered. It was a terrible experience to say, and it was only after nearly fainting twice a day while riding the subway did I snap out of it.

It's not amazing, actually.... These trend apples are patented and force the old classical variety out of the market. They have a big profit margin, so farmers are forced to sell these instead of maybe their family kinds. There's a lot more to it, but just....it's like what Monsanto did to corn
@lisalisa2628
@lisalisa2628 2 года назад
@@ellywhite4861 actually they're created the old-fashioned way, by tasting and patiently cross-breeding over 20 years. Not like GMO apples at all.
@ellywhite4861
@ellywhite4861 2 года назад
@@lisalisa2628 yes, you're absolutely right, of course. The Monsanto example was more to emphasize how big these are on the market. In my country(Germany) the "pink lady" has exterminated many of our old apple varieties from shops and I personally can only eat some of the very old kinds. I have a neighbour with tress over 200 years old and luckily he lets me harvest them for my own consumption. But generally it is simply not profitable anymore with the competition of for marketing optimized trend apples, so farmers have to sell these trend apples that are too sweet and too shallow for my taste and I have problems digesting them. At least growing them has not the disastrous consequences of Monsanto seeds, but they still have a negative effect on the market and history of local apple varieties. They also have less nutrients than old apples, but I mean....better this apple than no apple, I guess. The corn example was to show how corn varieties that were grown over generations have slowly disappeared because of Monsanto's practices. The oldest I know of was 600 years old and was pushed away by Monsanto seeds and their market practice. But at the end of the day a Boskoop (an old German apple) wouldn't be able to pay sponsorships to RU-vidrs. And even though I hope Abbey would advertise normal apples like this, she also needs to make money. And I personally have more joy seeing her advertise (trend) apples than meat subscriptions 😅 And to be fair, she doesn't discriminate between traditional and trend fruit in the content part of her videos :D (I'm a bit sensitive to this topic since I've recently talked to a farmer about his problems and afterwards did some research, so the timing of this trend apple ad was maybe just bad for me 🥲)

Her journey is very real and does show how our thoughts and feelings fluctuate so much during a weightloss journey. HOWEVER, Jaclyn is extremely wealthy and can find a professional dietitian, chef to make pre-made healthy meals, and can hire a personal trainer who will meet her in whatever spot she is in her weightloss journey. Many of us don't have the money to access things that will make weightloss easier so I'm surprised she doesn't take advantage of her blessings to help give her the boost and organization she needs.

I've been on a fitness / weight loss journey since June 2021. I was determined to not restrict my food too much because every time i've done that i've lost 10-15 pounds and gained it all back. Instead I focused on protein, fiber, and less beer 😅 Also started working out more often, and finding more movement I enjoy. The issue was my scale wasn't moving at all. Thankfully I took a photo in June, and on Jan 1st I took another one. My body looks SO different and i didn't even realize because I was so focused on the scale. Scale weight really isn't everything!

I'm going to be brutally blunt but I wonder if part of her disordered eating is due to the fullness of her face--as she has fluctuated in weight the filler has remained so she has that Prednisone moon-face look, and will no matter how small she looks. She can lose weight but if she looks in the mirror, she'll still see an overly "filled" face. It's in reverse why E.C.'s veneers look so big compared to her face.

I'm 25 and have a round face with pretty full cheeks, and always have even at my lowest weight. Before I learned to accept those features, I struggled so much whenever I looked at pictures of myself with other people, because even though I was the same size or even slimmer than some of my friends, I stood out (to myself, no one else gave a cr*p about it lol) because of the roundness of my face, which made me super self-conscious and led me to develop disordered eating all throughout high-school. Idk if that counts as body dysmorphia but it's something I've had to work on mentally for years.

Do you have any tips for not falling intoa different/new ED? For as I can remember I've eaten way too much when bored, stressed, etc., and then "made up for it" with restriction later. I never got diagnosed, but am pretty sure it's Binge eating disorder. But then I recently started ADHD meds (Vyvanse, which also is sometimes prescribed for BED), and it felt awesome at first, I was rarely hungry but could happily eat at meal times. But within a couple days of that I realised I was forgetting to eat when my husband wasn't home, and I decided to track my food for a day to see how bad it really was... I won't share numbers to not upset anyone, but it wasn't great. So I've kept tracking while I adjust to the meds, but it's been 2 weeks and I still find myself eating almonds and crackers with hummus or guac at 9pm because I realise I'm like a small meal behind the minimum and I don't want to hurt myself long term. But I can't keep tracking calories forever, it's time consuming and impractical and not great for my mental health. They already make me weigh myself every week for the ADHD stuff and I just can't help but get frustrated that nothing has changed and think that I could just eat salad and veggie broth all day and I can see signs of it becoming a different kind of obsession with numbers and food (like weighing all my raw ingredients and then decanting everything I made into a mixing bowl so I could weigh it again and see how much denser it was because of evaporation during cooking... I know it's horrible but I don't know how to avoid it). Also I just literally don't know what to eat. I can't just have a tonne of toast to make up the calories, I won't feel good, but healthier stuff tends to be lower, so I'd need to eat more of it, but I'm full.
@stormylou417
@stormylou417 2 года назад
I started consuming more sugar and fat when I realized I was struggling to eat enough. At this point you want to focus on making sure your getting enough calories so if it doesn't stress you start having a desert or two a day while you figure out what works for you with normal meal times. Say you know you tend to chronically under eat by 3 to 600 calories per day. Introduce a slice of chocolate cake or whatever dessert you like till you can get the calories of your main meals up. This definitely won't work for everyone but it's helped me.

Since you’re a physician you should get a full Thyroid panel. I couldn’t lose weight and when I got tested my TSH was 3.4 which is supposedly in the normal range. But many experts are now saying that the thyroid should ideally be under a 2.2. I ended up getting surgery for something else which dropped my TSH to a 0.9. I lost weight immediately after. Paradoxically for me (as a person with no history of EDs), weighing myself every day has actually helped me release some of the power of the scale. I didn't weigh myself for years, which is how I didn't realize weight had crept on over the pandemic. But seeing the number shift so much based on water intake, food intake, and time of day has actually released the number's power over me because I realize now that it is not a fixed measure of progress. It is just another data point that I observe then move on from and keep making healthy choices.

I use the scale but I HAVE to do it every day and log it somewhere where I can see the data and the trend over time. It’s caused me a lot of peace to see the patterns over time and notice the rises and falls that naturally happen at regular intervals in my body vs the slow decline in numbers overall if I look at the whole thing. I get way more stressed out about weight when I pin everything to an isolated number every couple of weeks. It’s a tricky thing.

I've had to give up on the scale for the most part. The number messes with my head and I go from looking at myself in the mirror and seeing what's really there to all of a sudden, after getting on the scale, looking much bigger than I did literally seconds before. Where I saw my my shape and loved it a minute ago, I suddenly hate it just because of the number on the scale. It took me a long time realize that's not healthy. I know I'm healthy, at a good weight for me, and making good choices regarding diet and exercise, but the scale just screws with me. I've had to let it go, but doing so has drastically improved my relationship with my body. I prefer to look at myself realistically and with kindness rather than judgement and hate. It has taken a very long time to get to this place. I'm no expert, but it seems to me that Jaclyn might fair better if she got rid of her scale and/or only used it in a limited way in the presence of a dietitian who can help her learn to use the information the scale provides in a way to make positive choices for her life. The whole scale thing is indeed very true. I am "compact" so I weigh alot more than what I look as I am quite heavy. Most people assume I'm in the 160s when that is my weight goal. Anyway, In the beginning I damn near lost 20lbs and got down to 169lbs but I wasnt able to sustain that since the cut in my habits was so dramatic so I put the weight back on but strangely I am only a size 8-10 despite me being a size 12-14 back before I lost the weight which is strange to anyone. And since my body refuses to be the slim-delicate type of shape I was going for initially I am instead gonna play the game by my body's rules and go for thick & kinda muscular look since it's easier for my body to hold onto weight but I bulk up quite easily for a girl. I still watch what I am eating and dont cut calories as much, but now I am focusing alot more on weight lifting for my lower body as muscles need more sustenance. So the muscles in my lower body that will make me 🍑THICC🍑 will end up burning the fat in my upper body to sustain itself. I'm also still doing cardio, just to burn any extra calories and it's just good for you 🤷🏾‍♀️

I would love to see her reach out to professionals for help, it’s an ego thing to “lose weight” all on your own but sometimes you need expert advice. A lot of it is psychological. That would be wonderful if she reached out to you for advice! Even a recorded zoom call for her update with you would be amazing to see!

Abbey you have such an elegant yet not boring dialogue in all your videos :) Makes me more intrested in nutrition ever since I came across your channel a few months ago. Plus nice to hear from a fellow Canadian here! Question from the video: Can you elaborate on what you mean by "your body is gonna want to fight weight loss"??

I have found that the scale can really mess with your head when you’re actively trying to lose weight. However, for me it’s an essential tool to maintain my weight. Many times I avoid overeating simply because I know I’ll see a gain the following morning. I am okay with the little day-to-day fluctuations but I have one number that’s like a warning going off … cut back or you’re going to be very unhappy!! If I said to myself, nah, I’ll just skip weighing tomorrow, one day off would lead to another and eventually I’d be looking at a weight gain of 10 or 15 pounds, and that would be. PITA to lose.

Her experience is totally relatable. So much of our self worth is based on how we think we are being perceived by others-especially if that perception is that we are failures. Striving not to fail or even stumble is enough to make most of us give up. I commend her for putting herself out there. It’s more common than I think we want to admit.

Abbey, I would love to see you cover how to incorporate your HCC into a Gastroparesis diet! I struggle to eat high-fiber foods and most proteins. Carbs are easy to digest but do not provide great nutrition.

I am enjoying your series and love hearing your thoughts. In my head, as I watch her journey, I see a lot of sodium. It's in everything. All the bags of various snacks in her pantry, it's in the canned tuna, the low carb tortillas have a lot of sodium for just one. The lunch meat too. Sodium is what makes the low carb and low fat taste hood. So what is an acceptable amount of sodium intake for a day?

I just bought cosmic crisps for my daughter's school lunches yesterday. Apples are also her favorite food, and they were my favorite growing up. I used to eat one after another while watching tv.

As someone who gains weight easily in my face, it is a big deal for weight loss/water loss/whatever someone wants to call it to show up. I have a hard time wondering why that is such an issue for some people to understand.

After I had surgery a few months ago, my oncologist put me on a mostly plant-based diet (I still eat eggs) I just gave myself 3 rules: 1) keep it at 1700 calories (or hovering) 2) have fiber and protein 3) go nuts as long as it works with the rules above

This video was really helpful for me. I've definitely been there -- feeling good and then the scale just gets me down. Ugh. It's hard too bc a med caused weight gain and all my Dr's appts start at the scale.😩 So knowing what I weigh is a constant.

I really appreciate you Abbey; on tips before heading out for a dinner/ lunch gathering. That is so true. I am trying to combat that "need" to do a cheat or especially high caloric food weekly that will just reverse my progress. Whilst I understand that balance is very important, but it has become too regular that after every such meals, I will feel guilty. I hate that feeling. Just trying to be real, weight loss is not easy. Maybe whatever steps or hacks there are, it requires work, attention and time to invest in it. I did Noom in 2021 and it worked well for me, though I have stopped after 3 months of use. I think your channel is more integral at keeping sense and being realistic of long term understanding between food, health, nutrition and lifestyle. Thanks Abbey!
