The comments under the video featured from that FD is chock full of US fireys voicing similar anecdotes, being asked to keep it hush hush, alter reports, multiple re-ignitions undocumented etc. Recently in NZ a fire chief and the media were caught straight up lying about a house burnt down from an EV, saying it wasn't the cause after all; but too many people saw it start and there were videos.

My wife and I refused to buy a condo in Washington state this last year. I am a retired firefighter and asked about EV parking and charging isolation. I saw a few at the building we looked at. The realtor looked like a confused dog. Asked me why is an EV an issue? Aren't they safer because there is no gasoline? Uninformed. These multi housing units have not caught up with what's going on. We bought a stand alone home because no one seemed responsible or concerned about any of it in these condo associations. Ignorance can and will hurt you. Btw-the fire service and search and rescue can and will charge people for extraordinary events. A wildland rescue can cost $10s of thousands of US dollars. Go ahead and do something stupid, you get the bill for it. I recall billing a fire for a haz-mat response to a meth lab. Yes, they can and should bill the owner for the EV. They are responsible for owning it. The fire department can become responsible for the contaminated water run off from the fire when allowing run off. We contained the water from these events and covered street drains. If it's raining heavily, then it's not a reasonable expectation. The run off is toxic. I have been on Li-ion battery fires. The bunker gear is contaminated and must be gross decontaminated, removed before entering even a fire vehicle. Then properly cleaned. We had 2 sets of gear for readiness.

As an ICAO HAZMAT specialist I can tell you that, almost exclusively, the people that taught me over the years started freezing-up with anxiety when Li-Ion batteries came on the scene. Their reservations were not about the normal operation of the batteries, it was the charging process that was the problem. These charging processes generate heat, a lot of it. Plug in your laptop, put your hand on the back and it'll burn you. Plug in your phone, same thing. What do you feel? Heat, right? So, we keep upping the ante to make bigger Li-Ion batteries and we're apparently shocked that more and more heat is produced during the charging process. It's surely just a matter time till people's houses do catch fire due to an EV-charging fire and the outcome is not as positive as this one. As the poster stated, what happens when there's an apartment block with EVs in the basement all happily charging-away as the residents sleep? What also happens in the City when everyone's working in their multi-story offices with the staff's EVs all charging-away in the basement carpark? It's not a positive look-forward, is it? There's an awful lot of variables at work here, isn't there? Who has good quality batteries? Who has the cheap ones? Who has good quality charging-cables? Who has the cheap ones? Who has access/availability to a fire-suppression blanket should the worst happen? Not a good prognosis going forward, is it?

Until these recalled vehicles have been repaired, the manufacturers say the safest place to park them is outside and away from homes and other structures. Fires can occur whether the vehicle is parked and turned off or while driving. That is just the first one that came up on google there are hundreds more recalls for fire on ICE cars. Problem with petrol or diesel fires is they are liquids which run all over the place when fuel tank's or lines are burnt spreading the fire widely. Retired US firefighter here. The amount of fire fighting equipment is not unusual. Whenever there is a vehicle fire in the garage of a home it is considered a structure fire thus requiring more equipment. This is due to the fact the fire can and often does spread from the car to the structure. In my 38 years of experience I never had to escort the car hauler to the salvage yard after a vehicle fire. We put the fire out, the tow company arrived and we went back to the station. And as was stated when these electric vehicles start catching fire in parking garages it is going to be a major incident. In my humble opinion electric cars are dangerous from a fire standpoint.

@@diecastb 60x you say? Putting out an EV fire is clearly multiple times more difficult. It takes a lot more water to put out an EV fire and once it's out it can start again so the vehicle must be removed to a safe place. The battery contains say 6000 individual cells and any one of them has a chance of catching fire thus setting the whole lot on fire. That's the chance of a fire 6000x.

@@diecastb An ICE fire can be extinguished in 10 minutes with 2000 gallons of water max, a single firetruck and a crew with basic training. EV fires take hours to contain enough to move the wreck, take 20 000 to 30 000 gallons of water, require multiple crews; then have to be isolated in a $40 000 tank or under a $5000 single use blanket and monitored 24/7 for a week. Moving the wreck needs a police escort and hazmat equipped fire crews in convoy. An ICE fire in a house garage can be extinguished by a single person with access to a basic extinguisher or mains pressure water. An EV fire can destroy an entire house inside 30 minutes and it's too toxic to approach by any crew other than a specially EV trained and hazmat equipped crew that will take at least 30 minutes to set up gear and deploy, then 3-5 hours to subdue EV fire. This is a good point, others mentioned carpark dangers as we saw in Luton airport fire, but for almost any multi storey city carpark this is a huge potential tragedy! Their present response is to pop the blanket on after cooling it with a huge amount of water for a few hours and skull-drag it out to the open with a heavy duty pick-up truck, but this would be impossible without removing lots of cars to make way, render the blanket useless from tearing and the risk of re-ignition and spreading fire by the time they get it outside is very high. Same goes for a car trailer. The danger they pose is insane.

In Australia, property owners pay an annual fire services levy via their council land rates, but fire services will charge for certain services such as false calls out, hazmat services that last longer than an hour, fire safety inspections etc. Property owners will usually have these extra charges covered under their private insurance (property or motor vehicle) so in the end we all end up paying for the extra costs required for fire services through both higher levies and higher insurance premiums. For reference, a recent fire of an excavator at a metal recycling plant took about 20 units around 24 hours to extinguish and the final bill to the insurers is estimated so far at over $800K - this includes not just all the fire services but also their support teams (ambulances on hand, traffic management, even food vans for the fire services) but also the EPA-regulated clean-up afterwards. The fire services block all the storm water drains before they start pumping water, then require the property owner to remove the contaminated foam/water for proper disposal - this exercise takes a few days of round-the-clock pumping trucks removing all the foam/water before the EPA does a final sign-off. The foam/water is taken to a recycling plant - of course, none of this comes for free!
