i live in HK where we have more electric cars than any country in the world per capita. I have a Tesla P100D i drive in and out of China, it’s one year old and falling apart, pieces of trim are falling off inside and it’s been back to the garage continually for over heating problems. The technology is brilliant the execution leaves much to be desired. i have driven the i pace it is much more refined than the Tesla, i’m happy to give up the extra performance you can’t use in the Tesla for the quality and finish of the jaguar.

Hi Petro Ped, your I-Pace review video is probably the BEST one on the Internet right now. Well balanced first impression video. I have recently ordered an I-pace and would like to share my reasons to choose it over a Model X: 1) Warranty and after sales service: I-Pace 5 years bumper to bumper, 8 years battery and drive unit. Tesla 4 years and 8 years. I-Pace comes with FREE 5 years annual services and road assist. Tesla has NO free annual service and 4 yaers road assisit. Jaguar has 46 dealerships around Australia. Everyone is equipped to repair and service the I-Pace. Tesla has 4 service centres. The next Jaguar service is just 10 mins away from me. The next Tesla service is 70 mins away. (Gold Coast, Australia) 2) Price: I-Pace starts at $133k. Model S starts at $145K and Model X starts at $153k 3)Off Roading: I-Pace can go off road, climb hills, drive on the beach, in the desert etc. Fully covered by factory warranty. Tesla voids your warranty in the moment you leave the tarmac. Australia has many beautiful places that a Model X can not go just due to warranty issues. 4)Performance: I-Pace 0-100 in 4.5Sec. Same spec for ALL versions. Tesla Model X Long Range does it in 4.9 Sec. More importantly, you can go full throttle with the I-Pace every time and any time. If you do that to the Model X, you will hear a groaning noise from the front suspension. Do it again and again, your front suspension will suffer big time. So no tracking for Model X any time soon. 5)Charging: The I-Pace can be charged at ALL charging stations except Tesla Superchargers. This also includes all Tesla Destination Chargers. I tested 15 destination chargers around my town and almost every one works without adapter. For those that do not work, there is a cheap locally made adapter called TeslAnything. In the next 2 years, 80% of new public DC Fast Chargers will be on CCS2 Combo standard. ALL current Teslas on sale in Australia will NOT be able to charge from those stations. If they are lucky, they will be using chademo adapters to charge from them. They are limited to 50 KW only. ALL major Australian car dealerships will have their own DC fast Charger installed at their dealership soon. None of them will be having chademo, only CCS2. 6)quality: This one is well known so I won't go into details. Workmanship and component quality of the I-Pace is a magnitude better than any Teslas I have seen and driven in person.

I have been looking forward to this all electric Jaguar coming out for ages, I know that I would suffer from range anxiety big time at the moment but I think that the infrastructure will move on very quickly and there will be a lot more charging stations popping up everywhere. Just need a lotto win now!

Ped. I picked one up. Jag had a campaign with a free pod point charger. We still have our C200d for long motorway journeys a few times a month. It’s a HSE with air ride suspension. Can’t complain. So happy with it. It’s had all the updates so infotainment is not too slow. Mostly use apple car play anyway. Light regen is a must as the brake pedal can be mushy and unresponsive at first when pressed a few inches. Love your review though.

Wheels filmed with movement remind me of the Xr3i doglegs. Very nice car Ped.

Very nice review. The SE with the 20” is the one we have ordered. I agree with the Tesla fan base that the charging network of Tesla is way better. I live in the Netherlands. There are alot of public charges available. Only long trips will requier planning.

Lovely looking car, great to see Jag getting into EV...but. Try get it through a 6 6 restriction...also take in to consideration the turning circle of just under 12m

Hope you are on a great bonus from jaguar because you are the first review that really sold me the car not sure the buying part would be for me yet due to the lack of charging stations being the reason id say the leasing for 24 months the way to go havnt had the chance to drive one as yet but I will nearer the time my pcp runs out on my present car

Lovely looking car, had a look at one this morning whilst dropping my car off for a service and MOT. Unfortunately still outside my price range. Have also heard elsewhere that there is quite a wait to get one as Jaguar had no previous sales numbers and the demand has outstripped the numbers being built . Still I suppose as demand increases prices may start being more realistic for the majority of people.

Great review! I have a First Edition on order. Ordered it on launch day, expecting handover on Boxing Day, so they definitely sold well! I managed a test drive finally a couple of weeks ago, and was blown away by it. I see a lot of "never replace a V8" comments, but as a real petrol head myself (my last car was a 5.5 litre V8), I'd just say that you need to drive it to get it. Jag have done an amazing job, and I can't wait for Christmas!

The re Gen is the same feeling as the exhaust brakes on the trucks. The BMW hybrid we had a for a couple of days was very weird like you say. It was astonishing on its pick up.

your big problem with EVs is the thing TSLA solved a long time ago, intelligent route based range planning... it helps to have your own charging network I guess.

For me it`s the first time i have not felt the need to doze off while watching anything to do with an EV, it`s certainly a looker and i do quite like the sound it makes, but at 70k! we are still a few years away before these sort of vehicles become an affordable alternative to tempt the majority of new car buyers away from the excellent petrol/diesel cars we already have....Then you will be needing a new name....EV Ped?

Great review. Thanks! The i-Pace is the kind of vehicle that will sway more and more ICE drivers over to the electric propulsion world. It looks great, has some badge snobbery to justify it's high price and, with that kind of torque and ride quality, it performs the way a car-loving person would want. I've driven a friend's Model S P100D and it's ludicrous mode was eye-popping. But it's massive weight concerned me as to how it would perform in icy conditions when it's mass would work against it when slowing down. All that torque absolutely destroys tires-something the general driving public doesn't think about until it too late, like when they hit a wet or icy patch and go flying. The regen braking was so intuitive I found it very easy to get used to and the silence made it incredibly easy to concentrate on my driving lines. EVs are the future and it's just around the corner. They just so silent most people can't hear them coming yet.

Another great review 👍 I’ve really been toying with the idea of getting an EV and this has now become a contender - I suppose the worry is that technology is moving at such a pace (no pun intended 😜) that I worry it’ll be out of date the minute I take delivery... not to mention freefall residuals -I guess leasing is the way to go.

Interestingly I've just bought a used I-Pace SE '68 plate for £47K. It has exactly the same spec as your test car. I feel I have a great car at a great price. Thanks for the video. PS the Jaguar upgrade now gives me 256 miles range in Eco mode.

Just picked up the Ipace today 21 inch wheels with kevlar inserts looks like a bat mobile, went for upgraded metalic glitter paint, would have preferred a bigger space as traded in my old 2006 ml320, feels like something out of the Tron movie 😎 hoping the UK charge network keeps getting better 🤞wasn't sheap at £87k but get the hmrc tax right off against my company profits 🏆

Pre empting the road is what makes the difference to the brakes as ya know, that’s exactly how we drive the big rigs economically.

Great review Pete. To be honest the range on the Jag would worry me on a long journey especially as there are so few truly rapid chargers about that aren't Tesla branded. At the moment my V90 gives me all the day to day I need on electric only but allows longer journeys, especially the trips to the south of France without worrying. Sort the charging thing out though and it becomes a totally different ball game.

For longer journeys in the UK, 90%+ of motorway services have a charger for the Jag.

Just changed from an S4 Avant to an I-Pace HSE. Still have the S4 for a little while and when you drive them back to back the S4 feels gutless. The I-Pace feel so much more responsive with truly monstrous torque available at any speed. I’ll still miss the S4 though.

Have this car ( owned for just under a year) and in general very happy with it . Best I have managed in all electric mode is 36 miles. My general runs are either around town which I do in all electric mode or round trips of just over 100 miles mpg averages between 76 and 84 mpg ( depending upon weather, the colder the weather the less all electric range). Charge the car overnight using Economy 7.

Saw this car a couple of months ago.. a guy not far from here apparently trains mechanics from all over on this vehicle.. ;) in Sweden.

No mention of the recalls and battery fires. Have they stopped using the LG cells. I would like to see one driven hard around the track until it stops just to see how it handles the heat.

Your planning starts at going with 100% when you leave home or work and use the onboard navigation like always. It takes 2 second to fill up your car, you plug it in and you plug it out.

Jag's temp stopping of production due to battery shortage does vindicate Tesla's decision to build a dedicated battery factory. They were mocked for doing so by legacy makers but it clearly makes sense. Investing in charging network is also paying off in spades.

Love the opinion, and it does look great. My only concern would be like you if you got caught short for charging. Yes plan ahead but when you get to the charging station you've chosen what if there are 3/4 cars in the same boat. Just not figured that one out yet.

2nd time of watching but when you show the cables that come with the car why is the 1st cable yellow on the car end and black on the other end?

I'm not ready to jump into the electric wagon as of yet. If it was possible for someone to make a request to Jaguar I would ask for this body shape given the Turbo four Engine in the F-type and turn this into the ultimate hot hatch. IT is beautiful. It is a really beautiful car.

What do the brake lights do when regenerative braking? In traffic, do they come on if you're not using the brake pedal?

I have an SE on order due next March and I agree with everything said in your report from my test ride, it is very exciting to drive The only thing from the pictures in the report showed 100% charged with circa 240 miles as Jaguar state 292 I accept that 292 might not be achieved due to circumstances but I would have expected 100% = 292 as a display £66k after the government grant is a lot of dosh, but I have to stop myself thinking I am not worthy of the outlay so long as it does not break the bank

Hi Ped Interesting review and food for thought in certain areas. Styling wise have to disagree with you, I hate the back end. Interior looks good however. Driving experience sounds promising, and as you say going to have change some perceptions. At present I could not be tempted to change from my SQ5, why, I need to tow, and the dreaded diesel fits the bill. Coming down to Goodwood with a triple axle trailer with 2 vintage cars, 310 miles in a day and 27.4 mpg. I rest my case.

Do brake lights come on with re-gen braking or doesn’t it slow down quick enough to need to show them?

I own a Jaguar and this the only car made to date I would swap it for. Love the idea of an electric car and as you say you just have to reboot you petrol head and plan you journeys and for me the longer runs always have a lunch break in them any way. Sadly Im in the same position you where with the Tesla in that its just to expensive but I would love one. Thanks for this video

I drove an i-pace yesterday and was very impressed, I think Jaguar have got a winner with this motor pity its not built in Britain but you cant have everything.

We are told you should drive a maximum two hours before you rest, that is well within the range of the i-Pace. I wonder how long it will be before the likes of Starbucks and Costa announce that they will be building recharge points in their stores. Particularly now that McDonald's have said that they will be installing charge points at all their sites in the near future. Drive a couple of hours, take a break, have something to eat or drink while the car is charging and off you go again.

A good review - I have never owned a Jag (always felt they are a bit "old man's car") but I am seriously looking at an EV to replace my Audi Q5 and this for me shifts the brand entirely. I took a test drive last week and was very impressed, taking it on motorway, town and country lanes. I am now about to make a decision on whether to go for this or not. The drive was superb and for me was a better overall drive than the Tesla Model X.

Great review and nice looking car. One thing though, you had no review on ‘fuel’ economy ? Most car reviews do talk about how fuel efficient a car is. The iPace alas is very ‘fuel’ inefficient which is a shame (for an EV). How much energy you use = your range = recharging. Jag have designed a great car but with a large battery like that, it’s too heavy which means it’s very inefficient for an EV, when compared to other EVs.

Great review very infrormative. Torn between this and a tesla but you may have just tipped tye balance . Only single thing i would pick you up on was the 13 quid a charge vs a whole tank at 70 odd pounds as the range of charge is far less than a equivalent tank of fuel . You did look sexy in the car though . 0 to 60 in 4.1 was highly impressive and the interior was juicy . Something satisfying about charging the car up and certainly futuristic thats for sure . I also think the roof was a must at under 1k . Yes i do like it . I think one would have to be carefull not to get carried away with the extra options though. At say 130 quid for 2000 miles and in turn 1300 for 20000 and 13000 for 200k its really a no brainer compared to petrol at lets say 40mpg mixed so what 6 pounds per gallon 60 pounds for 400 600 for 4000 . 6000 for 40000 and then 30k pounds for 200k miles so there you have a 27k saving already and thats not accounting for petrol going up then factor in congestion charge and tax and although a bigger outlay in the long run its really not so bad then yes the grant . Maintenance is less i hear also . I must ask though as i drove a few myself . Do you find them lets say diffrent handling wise ? I did in a mix between a sort of go cart and a computer game but in a rather pleasent way really

I believe that there's an extended range version coming out soon too; up to 320 miles on a charge....or over 400 kms. It's simply devilishly delicious looking!

So what do you do if you have planned your trip, checked where the charging points were, but then discovered them all in use?

sorry for asking silly question ,just a novice getting interested in purchasing a ev does the car has neutral or not my context is like ,sometimes on downslide of mountain journey it was easy to save fuel while going down by keeping car in neutral can we take advantage of something like that in it

Word to the wise.... magnificent car....I have an SE. Be aware, the 220mile range relies heavily on the regen function. So, on a motorway drive, this is vastly reduced. Expect 160-170 miles per charge on a motorway. Otherwise, brilliant car

In the future, the I-Pace will support 100kW DC Fast Charging. Right now it only supports half of this at 50kW. Contrast this charging time with the Tesla Supercharger network. Also you didn't try out any of the driving assistance functions and that's too bad because they fall short of expectations at this price level imho. That said It looks good and goes like hell so if that floats your boat and you have some cash to throw around it's a great buy i guess.

Can you clarify whether this example had air suspension or not - that might have something to do with the perceived floatiness?

It should be noted that a standard Tesla Model S 75d is £68, 000 Plus the paint colour, premium interior pack and similar wheels to the Jag, (already has the sunroof) brings the Tesla to almost exactly the same price as the Jag spec you have. (without the government discount) However you do get the 300 mile range. PLUS, I believe that if you acquire a referral code from a current owner, (easily done) you can still get FREE supercharging for one year after purchase (!) NOTE! IF you did normally fill up at home (£13.) "Every night".... but used free supercharging instead, that would save you approximately £4, 700 over the year!

So many directions they could take this. Imagine a low two seat sports car with low frontal area and drag coefficient. Two motors, one for each of the rear wheels, allowing instant torque control with no diff. Double wishbonds all round. Bit like the original Tesla I suppose but design and tech has moved on a bit since then. Or a jacked up no compromise electric defender offroader. Massive wading depth due to no air inlet or exhaust. Massive torque. Maybe a smaller motor for each wheel.

Hi Pete, Thanks for this excellent review. I have to say that I am already planning my next vehicle, having only just taken delivery of my current one, back in July 2018, my last 3 ltr desiel. I have made the decision to purchase an EV, but not until the range is at least 300 miles (400 would be better). I do accept your recommendations on the subject of route planning and to this end I am already doing this as a precursor to going EV in the future. It is somewhat of a chore at present, but I am sure the availability of charging points will improve quite quickly.

It's a pretty thing. Jaguar should have been making their vehicles look seductive like this. Though calling the interior a "masterpiece" is an absurd overstatement. It's very conventional and ordinary, and the laggy touchscreen is a total mess that I could never live with. Overall, this in no way compares to a much larger Model X. This is more on par with the size and capacity of a Model 3, which I understand isn't readily available in the UK yet. Cross shopping both, I'd rather have a Model 3 that's faster, has better range, has autopilot, has an arguably sexier interior, and is the safest car you can buy. The 3 is also considerably cheaper. In the US, the Tesla charging network is far superior to the unreliable public charging networks that this car would require during road trips. After test driving the iPace, it's clear that automakers are having a difficult time matching Tesla.

I love the Jaguar, and the only thing that stops me from converting from my Model X to a Jaguar, or any other EV, is the idea of not having access to the Tesla Superchargers. I just can't stand the thought of having different subscriptions and membership cards. In a Tesla you just need to put in your destination, and the car tells you where you need to stop and charge (for free).

Nice review, i had the I Pace for a testride and i have to say it´s a real drivers car. I have also driven a Model S but the I Pace is the better car on my opinion. What do you think about the energy consumption of the I Pace?

At least with the front boot it gives you somewhere to keep the charging cables separate from the rest of your luggage.
