I've been lucky enough to have a Jaguar I-Pace for the last 9 days to get a real feel for range, efficiency, build and overall performance. II have to say, I'm impressed overall, but feel theres a few points the new electric Jag should be on top of coming in to the EV market with the competition now so tough, and it's not getting any easier. Join me while I put the I-Pace through it's paces and see if it's worthy of trading in our beloved Model S.....

Happy to report for my driving in Hawaii, I get 259 miles on a full charge. The highest range I've recorded is 269 miles. I've had my First Edition i-Pace for about a month now. Aloha! ❤

JLR have really done a great job brining this car to market so quickly.....every other (main stream) manufacturer are just dragging their feet. Had a test drive last week in the HSE spec. Would have it over the Tesla 100%. The good thing that people are missing here is...... there are now enough ev's for people to start having personal preference. On my test drive, had the extra Jag noise switched on, brilliant!

Just an FYI. I had 4 cars (one Volvo v70 and 3 BMW5 combi’s) with pale interior and leather seats. I have kids and haul around quite some stuff for my job. Never had issues with them getting dirty. It’s leather, so easy to clean. And it gives so much more a feeling of space. If you like it, go for it, don’t let your practical concerns get in the way!

Great review... nice to hear a considered appraisal, warts and all... Supercharging and range/efficiency are the main reasons I will not be giving up my MS. You may not use the Superchargers often, but when you need them, you need them. I recently did a 1.3k road trip in Europe. I don’t think the IPace is ready for that yet.

As an avid EV fan and a Tesla owner I really want the I-Pace to be a success and to be embraced by both JLR and the owners. This review had a promising start and a bit of a downer end. Remember, this is the expensive First Edition, better-priced options are to follow.

Great review. Very informative, although it’s 2022 when I am viewing this and the ipace has had some updates. I am thinking of buying a used HSE and don’t do long journeys. Something you said I think is probably true, that with the I pace when paying so much for a car you would feel you got value for money with the I pace, especially with the oyster leather seats. Also you get as standard a tracker fitted and emergency buttons and also if the airbags go off the emergency services are called with your location. But I loved your relaxed and objective review.

Nice Review! Very accurate and fair. I’m in Southern California and went to the local Jaguar dealer in Oxnard. One I-Pace was on the showroom floor and plugged into a type I 110-volt plug. Sitting in the vehicle I noticed it was at 100% charge and read 265 miles remaining. Don’t know exactly what that means, does the 110 slow charge work better then the type 2 faster charge? A beautiful car, looked it over and over, sat in all the seats. I’m 5’10” and found everyplace comfortable. The model was HSE and had the heads-up option, really nice for an old guy who needs all the advantages given. The second one was outside and had 22” wheels. Really couldn’t see the difference jumping out at me but didn’t like the $1,400 upgrade knowing the ride with the 20” was better. Got to ride in and drive one as well, nice. If you have solar and a powerwall 2 it almost free to use and who drives more then 200 miles in a day. If we do, we have two gas guzzlers that will get us throw the trip.

I always enjoy your reviews, so natural and nice that you both have different perspectives. Just imagine what it will be like when Florence is old enough to voice an opinion? The efficiency seems to be the Achiles heel of this car. It also means that charging speed is effectively slower per mile than it should be. Otherwise I really like it but it really should be capable of a genuine 300 miles for the money. It makes the Kona look like an amazing bargain (OK not a luxury car but less than half the price and more capable for longer journeys). I'm keeping the Zoe until 300 miles for £20K is available and that seems further in the future than I was thinking when I bought it.

That's a shame, as the Kona is excellent, but Hyundai weren't making a profit on the car before the price hike so maybe now they are. However, there are alternatives, and were almost at the point of changing, so many options, it's getting tough 🙄

I am really amazed at the range (or lack of) of the Jag. One of our vehicles is a BMW i3 with the 33KWh battery which gets approximately 140 miles around town (usually under 50 mph max). I just did an out and back highway trip of 120 miles at a steady 65 mph and still had 9 miles left in the battery (7% remaining on the Guess-o-Meter). As much as I really love the i3, I wouldn't consider it to be an extremely aero design, so what is the Jag's problem? Because of lack of charge points in the US, I still feel that the best option currently for long trips in the US is our 2014 Volt. By the time the Jag will be available in our area, I hope they have improved the range because I definitely would purchase one. Not a fan of the spartan interior of the M3 and the X is too big and not that great on range either. Love your reviews and James' "freezing" road tests. LOL...

Love your honest reviews James & Kate. Great watch as always. The funny thing is with the Jag. It’s less efficient and needs the supercharger network more than the actual Tesla does. I love the quality of the i-Pace. Sadly I’ve not driven one yet. But I will be sometime soon I’m sure. Can’t get enough of test driving EV’s. I like the ride height of the Jag but I love the upgradable software features with the Tesla. It’s a very tough decision as you say. A blend of both cars would be lovely in the ideal world. Let’s hope Tesla & Jag Watch this video and learn from it. Thanks again. PS Florence sounds so cute in the background hehe 🥰
@markgaudie80
@markgaudie80 5 лет назад
Just to add. The poor efficiency would be a deal breaker for me. 180 to 220 (real world miles) out of a 90kwh pack is poor. It almost feels like all that extra cost of the battery is wasted. Feels to me more like the range of a 50kwh pack really.
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 5 лет назад
Thanks Mark, it was a great episode to make and we genuinely had an awesome time with the car. However, like you said, the range is disappointing in the real world, the SC network would make that a non issue completely 👍🏻 I think Florence may be making a few more appearances, she quite popular it seems 😍

A much better driver's car. You will love it if you like driving. The extra downforce, wider tyres, steering weight and feel and stiffer chassis all make it worthwhile to get the most from the instant acceleration and traction. Safer too if you need to brake or change direction quickly. Like any more expensive car - you are paying for quality, looks and handling. If it were purely a decision from logic the Tesla would win. From the heart the jag would win. Most car enthusiasts choose from the heart. A to B drivers from the brain. That said, the higher voltage helps charging times. The I-pace does live updates to software as well as Tesla.
@tomquimby8669
@tomquimby8669 5 лет назад
What's interesting about this is the i-pace is basically a track car. lots of power quick but recharge times are slow. when this car you are driving comes down to a sensible price in 5 years, there will be much better cars with much longer range for less money. Nice to see Kate back giving her point of view and what seems to be a new 2 thumb gesture. it would be good to get an idea of battery loss leaving the cars unused foe 2 weeks, to see how well battery cars will deal with long periods of not beiing used.

Nice to know there are more cars to now chose from . And as for the range one draw back of a large battery / range is when you need to charge you will be sat a lot longer at the charger until 100kw chatters come on stream which will be a good while off yet.uncles that is you have a Tesla of course.

Wonder if the lower range was due to colder weather?? What was the average temp like the week you had the car?? Temperatures below 40 seems to reduce range by up to 30% on most EV's. Many of the other reviews on the I-Pace were done in warmer climates.

The Model S was designed in the 2000’s. In people’s garages in 2012 (in California, at least). A truly complete redesign of the S, from a more financially secure Tesla, would be a much better car than the one you own.

Another great review guys. I think Jaguar need to do better. I'm not saying it won't sell, the demo-graph this is aimed at will probably have an S or X, and this will be used as a second car for the school run! It will be the new Chelsea Tractor. Most 'normal' buyers will just see £84K and sub 200 mile range and want more for the money, may be holding out for a high end Audi or Merc? Me? Well we are already a 2 EV household with only one more to go BUT, I need to tow over 2 tonne so will be holding out for a Bollinger B1 or equivelant.....(in my dreams). Seriously I can't go 100% EV until something like that is available.

@GlynHudson 5 лет назад
Great review, good work! Impressive design and engineering, but I just couldn't live with that terrible energy economy. It's not just the range, it's also the fact that it's since using more energy it will obviously take more time to charge at any given charging rate than a more efficient ev.
@GlynHudson
@GlynHudson 5 лет назад
@John Weatherley This is correct, however, my point was charging an I-pace or a Tesla as the same rate will result in the Tesla getting more range since 1kW added to a Tesla will increase range by about 3 miles but the same energy added to an ipace will only give you about 2 miles. At most charging locations the ipace will currently be limited to 50kWh charging max, usually about 45kW in reality. It's true this will change in the future but the ionity super fast DC chargers are a long way off begin widely available.
@GlynHudson
@GlynHudson 5 лет назад
John Weatherley jealous! Enjoy. Don't get me wrong; I do think it's a stunning vehicle, beautifully engineered. If it helps get more people into EV's that can only be a good thing. It's still the most efficient Jag ever made by a long way! Hopefully, it will push charging networks to deploy more rapid 'rapid' chargers.
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 5 лет назад
Interestingly the iPace has been tested at 350kW charging speeds so, fingers crossed, this will happen in future revisions. If they could get the DC down some that would certainly help for sure. Glyn, love the camper, I want to convert one myself, I'm on the look out now 👍🏻

Glyn, I don't agree with design and tech. The co-efficiency on this vehicle is horrible. Their tech is Tesla's yesterday tech. The newly design M3 motors and battery tech makes this car obsolete immediately. When the Y comes out, it's going to blow this car away.
@markcornwall8132
@markcornwall8132 5 лет назад
Quite like the iPace but having spent a couple of months in our Kona I would still go for the Kona. It's all about the rapids. Spending 45 minutes on a rapid is bearable on a longer trip but putting the same number of miles back in an iPace would be nearly double that and that's the deal-breaker. A widespread network of faster rapids would help but that's got to be 2 or 3 years away in the UK. Such a shame it's not very efficient. Good review thanks.

I have to agree about the HUD issue. I drove mostly german cars for the last 15 years or so, and pretty much all of them (being in the BMW 5 market space or higher) had a head up display, and that is actually the biggest gripe i have about Tesla that they do not even offer that option. For crissakes, it is available on the smallest 3 series BMW. Considering there will be more options next year when the Model 3 arrives, and the Model 3 carries the problem of the general high price and 10% import tax and on top of that 19% VAT over here, it might not be competitive except its "Tesla appeal". I don't drive long distances, the longest would be probably just within the range of the iPace, everything longer is a plane ride instead. So the high consumption really doesn't bother me that much. But then, it's gonna be a busy test drive year i guess.

I liked the style of this review. The Jaguar is more of a conventional luxury car that should appeal to the greatest number of people. Personally, I prefer my Model 3, because I am more of a technology person. I love having almost everything controlled by the center screen, because Tesla can constantly improve and change whatever they want to. Many other people can't stand that center screen and they think that the car looks cheap without lot of buttons and screens. I would like to see Tesla offer more luxury features on their higher end models. I'd love it if Tesla offered cooled seats on the Model 3, but you have to move upmarket for that option. I don't even know if Tesla has brought back cooled seats, because they had problems with the leather wearing improperly with all of the perforations. Do you give any preference to cars built in England? I like to support local businesses, like Tesla, because I live only an hour from the Fremont factory.

I'm guessing the "noise" you referred to is the simulated motor noise? I wish they would let you turn it off.

180 miles isn't great but not to bad either. The issue I have is if doing long distance you will only be charging to 80% which is 144 miles. Then you won't be running it down to 0% before needing to recharge so range would be even less than that

Kate in a t-shirt likes to use the heating in the seats and James in a wool sweater likes the ventilation more, go figure! 😂 Great review as usual, well balanced with a personal touch. One thing though ,was the artificial engine sound on or off? It sounded like it was on to me which would explain the regen noise.

I am due to have a TD in the i-Pace soon, but I suspect that the even with the air suspension in a Tesla is not as smooth and coomforting as that of the JLR product. My MX is noticeably more choppy and harsh riding than my 13 plate range rover that I swapped for the MX. The issue with the JLR is the range and JLRs ability to provide good aftersales care the way that Tesla has done. The main reason that I moved away from JLR was the shocking way in which I was treated as a customer having been a avid brand fan and ambassador. I eargerly await your review of the Audi e-tron :-)

Not as good as the Kona for mileage, efficiency, but what a beautiful car just too expensive for me and the range what a pity.. still no doubt Jag will sort that out on the next generation. I’ll just have to stick with the Kona and dream.

The iPace is larger than the Kona, so it'll be interesting how the imminent Niro competes on comfort and space.

The I-pace has a greater range by the same standard of testing, as it has a larger battery. It also charges faster at any station due to it being a higher voltage battery.

You both talk abit about motor noise - did you have the simulated noise turned on or off? I suspect you had it on. This is in the menus. It’s a bit cheesy, but fun I think.

Lovely review for the i Pace. Things I do not like when I test drive it 4 weeks ago: there is No TowBar option. The initial delayed on Quick acceleration off at the junction. the window switches look very cheap plastic. Very small viewing area for the 360 cams. No Sunblinds for the panoramic roof. Almost £80K .I bought the Volvo XC90 T8 instead.

The sort of customers that are going to be drawn to the jag in our area I think will be older customers. My concern is the difference between claimed range and actual as this will play in to the hands of the EV non believers. There is something going on with those two motors causing that inefficiency but will jag have any want to sort it out?

Thank you for your unbiased review. Because the i-pace is an SUV, do you think the Model X is a better comparison and if so which would choose? To be honest I'm not worried about the comparison as I believe it's more important to get car makers to start building EV's. If it wasn't for Tesla would Jag have created the i-pace or Audi built the e-tron? Cheers ☺️

Glenn Moloney Having being in both The iPace is more like a Range Rover Evoke/Velar size where as the Model X is bigger than the Full size Range Rover and has even more storage and more seats so they’re very different beasts. I’m terms of higher seating they’re similar but in terms of size and practically the iPace is more on par with the Model 3 as it is smaller than the S.

As someone posted (bizarrely..!) in the UK Renault Zoe Facebook group after driving the iPace ..." Most importantly, it makes you realise that the Tesla is what happens when techies make a car. The iPace is what happens when a luxury car maker with 80 years of experience decides to apply all their Formula-E and aluminium engineering expertise to one of their cars."

If you have time watch the Bjorn Nyland on the testing of Jaguar I-Pace. He's basically saying that the I-Pace is not as efficient as a Tesla by a lot as it should be. He's hoping a software update will fix the problem. I personally think if you take all those luxury features out which are too heavy would improve some of the efficiency. I still like the Model X better. Nice to see Florence. She's looking too adorable.

We have recently driven one and although it's improved greatly it still a way behind the iPace. However, the gap is closing. I remember the classic MS interior was terrible, and now a few years later they're literally decades ahead. It won't be long before they're market leaders all round 🙏🏻

Great review, i feel if you dont want to do distance its probably better car. Ive an S for 5 years now and you can go anywhere. I think all the other questions like how long to charge? How long do the batteries last? Everyone knows EVs are fast and cost nothing to run, those old chestnuts dont get asked now, so its down to the cruncher. How far can it go? Only EV owners get the Tesla supercharger importance but for real thats the most important, a Tesla goes for ever and other brands hmm not so sure.

The problem is not just the range so much as the time it will take to recharge a 90kWh battery at 50kW or especially at 10amps if you don't have a dedicated charger at a destination. 20 hours perhaps on the latter - certainly not overnight. We've given up when seeing an ipace on an ultracharger at 30% knowing it would be on for at least another 1h and then to only get 186 miles for that time investment seems very difficult to justify.

The Jag is undoubtedly a great car, but there are efficiency issues with it, as found by Yourselves and Bjorn Nyland, who went into nitty gritty figures [he's such a data nerd 👍]. If they get that sorted it will be a genuinely superb car. But it falls short on range, and that's not on at the price. It's not alone. The proposed German big EVs about to emerge are also very average on range, for example. Good video.

Rambler Andy do you think the effiency issius can be adjusted by software updates or something like that?
@ramblerandy2397
@ramblerandy2397 5 лет назад
@@vanthanhlee22 That was something I was just thinking about. One would certainly hope so. Bearing in mind the virtual miracles Tesla can perform with their softare updates, one would hope so. Then again, one of the major advantages Tesla has is that their software is so much more capable than other manufacturers. But let's hope Jaguar can improve the efficiency purely with software.
