My XF S was only serviced 2000 miles ago, at an independent Jag Specialist garage. It had a major service and cam belt change and everything was good. I filled up at a local supermarket, before setting off on a 270 mile trip. About 20 miles into the trip, I got the water in the fuel, check handbook warning message! I thought here we go, another expensive trip to the garage and will I even get to my destination. I looked in the handbook and I couldn't find anything about what to do, so I googled the problem and amongst the results was this video. I am very practical and even recently rebuilt a 1974 Triumph Spitfire, however my XF is dealer maintained or Jag Specialist maintained, so I don't normally get my spanners out to it. This video is really well done and even includes how to re-prime the system, so I ordered a filter from Berkshire Jag Components (a Bosch filter, about £39 including next day delivery) and did the job myself. It took about 15 minutes, was dead easy and I had no problems what so ever. So thank you very much indeed, for taking the time to film and post this!
My first impression when I saw this video was, Thank God I’ve found others who have the same fault and there’s an “Easy Fix”. Then I thought, Do I really want to risk trying to fix a Jaguar? Well...I watched the video and followed the instruction to the letter. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!! Can’t fault your detailed instruction, Thank you so much, not just for giving me the confidence to fix the problem, but also for giving me back what feels like a new engine with performance back to how it was... I’ve realised now how sluggish the engine had become...Thank you so much, Leon
What a clear and informative video, I am about to change my fuel filter as I am suffering those symptoms. PS like you my car is dealer serviced and I can't wait to look inside the filter and if it's as bad as yours I will be ripping into the dealership. Many thanks
Had exactly the same symptoms when entering motorway and giving plenty of throttle my 2.2 XF. Engine died and had to coast back onto hard shoulder. Thank god it didn't happen on one our lovely new " smart motorways" . Re-started a few seconds later and drove home on reduced power. Changed fuel filter and all is well. Interestingly I date checked the filter and despite having so called service history ( I bought the car with 80 k on the clock) the filter was the factory fitted original !
Hi Leon, i have only just discovered your channel (I’m thinking of buying an XF). Thanks for your videos. I have found them hugely reassuring. I hope you’re well, as is the XF. Thanks again. I appreciate your time and effort.
Thanks! Did mine two days ago, was a life saver as its close to Christmas and no mechanics anywhere to be found! Only thing to add is the syphoning process too a lot longer for me and had to repeat and took 8 times to start my car.
@@leonfletcher6045 Hi. Can the filter actually be "drained"? Someone mentioned it on some Jag forum, but I don't remember exactly. Btw, the buzzing sound at 15:53 that's a fuel pump?? Mine is quite loud and I find it really annoying. I think I can even hear it when driving, the pitch is changing a bit, depending on engine rpm.
Excellent, thank you. That filter must be the original, I suppose you could find out its age from the serial number. A disgrace to the Jaguar main dealer if it is. It just goes to show, a main dealer service history is not always what it appears to be.
Hi Fella Excellent video! I have exactly the same problem ‘to a tee’! You have explained this in a very clear way for a mere mortal like myself to undertake. Hopefully it will work for me? Worth a try. Regularly serviced by Jaguar @ 135,000. Just noticed that there is no sign of a filter change anywhere in the service book…… Sheesh! Where did you get your SDD software? Thanks for your super video👍
So this light has been coming on constantly recently and after I see it sometimes the car shuts down completely but doesn’t have no reduction in power, starts right back up and drives beautifully but it is doing it frequently. A mechanic ...not the dealer, put that car check thing in the box and nothing for the code. I hope it’s a fuel filter for me too because that light scares me and my pockets!
Thanks for the videos, Leon. They will no doubt help me out as and when I become an XF owner in the not too distant future. One question though… would it be worthwhile charging this fuel filter every year/few years or every X thousand miles do you think?
Doesn't surprise me. I will NEVER take my jaguar to a Main jaguar dealership again. Was told fault on mine was as a result of having a 'non jaguar approved' filter fitted so warranty didn't cover fault or replacement. Only thing is, the 'non jaguar part' was fitted by the jaguar main dealer i bought car from 12 weeks earlier. When I got car home checked new filter to find this main dealer had fitted an identical make and manufacturer filter ( that they advised was non jaguar approved). My opinion is that the service departments are crooks and rip off merchants. But parts on line and DIY. :)
I have a 2011 XF Portfolio and it keeps saying that there is water in the fuel, would a new filter solve this problem. i have done what the user manual says but it still says that there is water in the fuel. Any help would be appreciated
My jaguar XF 4.2L supercharger engine power is low... my check engine is on... I haven't changed my fuel filter ever since I bought it 2 years ago... is that the problem???? Where is the fuel filter located in the XFS
I have an water in diesel warning. I plan to change fuel filter which is probably due as 10 yrs old. How do I re-set warning light do I need specialist plug in diagnostic equipment?
Brilliant video, I have this issue at the moment on my 3.0D S, huge help to me, I don't have the code reader though, where did you get the software may I ask? Cheers Steve
Hi Leon, great video! Got some real insight as my 2013 Jaguar XF 2.2 Diesel presents with a similar code - P0088. My local garage says a fuel filter change like what you did in the video should solve the problem. I am contemplating doing that or going to the dealer for a full diagnostic that's about 80 EUR. What do you advise?
Please anyone, tell me what else could cause this light. I hope it’s just a fuel filter because my car does run beautifully so it’s hard to believe my engine is about to go. I’m a single female right now and don’t want to get jerked by the overpriced dealer or some greedy lying mechanic. I have an XJ
Laptop is a Panasonic CF52 tough book (off eBay) that I use solely for diagnostics. I think I paid a couple of quid online somewhere for the workshop manual (google these onlinemanuals type sites) - I think the 2.7D and petrol one is available through the Jaguar forums for free. The Mongoose JLR (clone) cable came off the 'bay too and usually comes with a CD of the SDD software, or you could always 'ahem' torrent it ;)
I followed the link from forums you are linking to, but it seems it's dead. Any idea where i can get this manual from? Or maybe you can help with my issue. Engine fan starts spinning loudly as soon as i switch on ignition and stays like that until i switch it off, even few secs longer. Any idea what it would be my Jag is 2010MY 3.0 XF S Diesel. Thanks for any clues.
Thank you for the first class video. Was great help. Can you give us a link to purchase the software for Jaguar XFS 2013 and for the workshop manuals. God bless you.
I got the workshop manuals from "jagdocs" and the software often comes with an *ahem* 'cloned' Mongoose cable, available on a well-known auction site... or you could use BitTorrent ;)
Before doing most electrical work, yes. For diesel filters, brakes etc. I personally don't, although the service manual would have you disconnect it for everything. I just find it a pain in the ass to reset windows and other settings after having the battery off.
Hi, very informative video, just had my annual service done and that included fuel filter replacement (XF2009 diesel 3.0), an error in dash 'Water in Fuel' straight after service, mechanic suggesting to change the sensor under the filter, any idea what that might be ?
I get the same on my 2013 XF3.0 D S. I've read that fuse F43 in the main underbonnet fuse-box may have blown. I don't know why it should, but it might be a quick fix if it has. I believe the sensor itself costs £50 or so, but it seems to be a simple screw-in part on the bottom of the fuel filter canister.
@@IxxxMnMxxxI Thanks for letting me know. Checked F43 today - OK. Drained some fuel out of the base of the filter- clean as a whistle - no water at all. Went for a run - no warning lights, which is good. Hope it doesn't come back though - the sensor is easy enough to unscrew but its wiring goes straight into the loom, joins up with the wiring to the suspension top mount and the 2 of them disappear into the depths - dreas to think where I'd reconnect them.
I would start by taking out the fuel filter (you can see me do this in the video) unscrew the drain plug at the bottom, drain off the fuel (and water) from it, and replace. Then re-prime the filter and see if this sorts out your issue.
I use SDD - the dealer software, running on a Panasonic Toughbook and a Mongoose cable... but a OBD wifi Dongle (ELM327) and one of the better smartphone apps could do it.
