So you've got about $100K to throw at a large luxury European car. I'm not going to ask you where you got it - I'm like a doctor, it doesn't matter to me, I'm just here to help. The way I see it you have a five options: 1) Give it all to me - get in touch in the comments below. 2) Buy Benz E-class class 3) Buy BMW 5 Series 4) An Audi A6 or if you don't want to be like every other schmuck there's Jaguar XF.
And that's actually the first reason you should be interested in the Jaguar - it's not the Benz/BMW/Audi default option that just about everybody goes to when buying a big luxury euro. But there's a reaons why they are so popular - they're freakin' good.
This new generation XF arrived in Australia in early 2016. It's big, it's imposing it swoops and bears down on its prey like a Jaguar should. It's different enough without being unusual and looks more beautiful than its Benz, BMW or Audi rivals. There's the strong shoulder line, that side profile, that grille.
And this the R-Sport 25t. What does that mean? R-Sport is the grade and out of four levels of XF it's on the second rung. And 25t is the engine it's petrol one and it's on the second rung out of four different engines.
OK what makes it an R-Sport? A body kit which is made up of the boot lid spoiler, the side skirts and the front bumper and 19-inch wheels, that's not them those are optional 20-inch ones in Sparkle Silver. This one is here is fitted with the black pack - it makes things black - like the grille, these vents and around the windows.
But not those tinted windows are tinted, they're an option too.
This is a beautiful cabin. There's the dash which sweep like the bow of boat from door to door. The air vents and gear shifter which wake up when the car's started. And the most recent update to the XF brought with it the new 10.2-inch touch screen 12.3-inch virtual dash, um also options...
The XJ sits sits between the XE and the XJ. Room in the back seat is pretty good. That's my driving position, and even at 191cm tall I can sit behding it with that much space. Headroom is excellent too.
The boot, it's pretty darn big - we can get this in and this in and this in.
But enough this flirty chit chat - what's it like to drive.
Now it might be called an R-Sport but that doesn't make it any faster than the others. It does get sports suspension and this makes it handle better.
The 25t is turbo charged petrol engine and it's excellent - there's some really decent shove to it. Now the car looks enormous but because this car's structure is aluminium it's super light and that engine has no trouble pushing it along.
The only problem is the sounds - there is no sound and that just doesn't match the its appearance. You got this angry looking weapon and it sounds a bit like a microwave. It's like David Beckham - he looks like god, but when he opens his he talks like this. But when he plays he's excellent - just like this car.
There's something else we really should tell you Jaguar will update XF in the coming year with its new engines. The engine in this car will be replaced with a more powerful four cylinder turbo. You might want to wait for that one to come out, but if you can't be assured the current engine produces more than enough shove.
That light body makes the XF R-Sport 25t feel like it can point and shoot in any direction. That steering is light and accurate, it's surprising agile and the cabin is serenely quiet.
But wait we found that our test car had a few quality issues that could be improved. That dash and the door frame meet up on the left side but not on the driver's side.
In the back the plastic moulded panel that covers the door sill doesn't seem to fit well and has this sharp edge - while on the other side it fits perfectly.
This is almost a freakin good car, but in some places the quality doesn't feel as good as it should be, the 25t engine wouldn't be my pick either because of it's lack of sound track for about $15 grand more I'd go for the R-Sport with supercharged V6. That said this is an agile and quick saloon, its comfortable, luxurious and serene inside, and it looks incredible - especially in this Rhodium Silver metallic paint.

Another great review from you Richard! Your style is more entertaining than anyone out there, keep it up mate. I really like the current crop of Jags and would buy one over any Mercedes or BMW.

I have the xf 2016 20d amazing car, when in in sport with dynamic mode it is really aggressive it just flies off, especially after 70-80kmh, only downside is the gearbox it’s a bit slow when changing gears but otherwise amazing hold just under 3,000 rpm’s at 220kmh

I ummed and ahhhhed about this engine (in an XE, granted) and thought it would feel underpowered. Trust me, it REALLY doesn’t... I had an VE Commodore SV6, which made exactly the same power figure, but the Jag’s gearbox is what makes it. It does so much more with the power on offer, and it out-handles anything else in the segment... by far.

Jaguar will be offering the petrol version of the Ingenium 2.0 litre four cylinder engine this year, which they say will produce up to 295 bhp (220kW). That should be a good compromise of more power than the 4 cylinder but less weight than that of the V6.

Chris X where did you read this? And is it the same price tag as the 200 bhp petrol engine?

Would buy this, but that 4 cylinder engine ruins it. No way would i spend this kind of money on a car that doesn't even have a v6, let alone a v8. This car doesn't sound as expensive as it is, and that's a problem.

I said the same thing. I got these same features in a Chevy Impala v6 for about 65k cheaper. Although, I know they don’t compare, just saying.

The question you gotta ask yourself is: Who the hell buys a V4 anyway when you got downsizing in the pipeline?! A V6 with twin turbo, or a V8 twin turbo, or in my case, a V12 twin turbo, does the job helluva lot better than a lame single turbo V4!

yoof01 Exactly ! The 300hp one is an absolute monster regardless of the Cylinders , i’ve test driven one it was absolutely satisfying to drive , what a beast , but the v6 is obviously better there’s no doubt about that at all !
