Welcome to our 1978 Jaguar XJ6 Series 2 barn find. The Jag was stored in a garage not far from us, only a couple of miles away since 1999, 25 years ago, when it was taken off the road for maintenance by it’s previous owner.
In this episode we tackle the major rust repair to the rear suspension and jacking point area.
The challenge we have set ourselves in this Jaguar barn find series, is to revive the Jag and to get the car back on the road again.
So let’s crack on, We hope you enjoy the episode
Huge thank you for watching.

So glad to see you both on my screen working on one of your projects. The body work on the Jaguar will certainly keep you busy and provide us with some more content to watch as you get further stuck in. Keep up the good work.

Hi , your doing a grand job .I Iike the common sense mods they need doing all the time ! I recon your in need of big blocks of wood or timber towers ive made my self , a 4x4 x7 ft fence post chopped into 8 lengths cost me a £10 some threaded rod to bolt it together . be far safer to work on motors than any thing else . there is only one chance to get it right eh ! be safe ... the small sort of triangular sill-end closing-panel used to be available from Martin Robey etc for around £15 iirc. Can't believe the previous guy just fibre-glassed it in 🤦‍♂

the repair-panels for this area didn't include the large domed boss (for the radius arm) or the heavy plate on the top that the jack-point plate screws in to. I had to transfer the parts from my rusted originals to the new panels. Measured 10 times before welding them on lol

Got to admire the ability and work ethic but I was puzzled by some of the decisions made. 28:45 why leave the rotten and holed end of the inner rocker poking out then weld the closing panels to it? Surely that section of inner rocker should have been replaced, not least for structural reasons. Even though you undersealed that projecting seam rot will start again there pretty quickly being the wettest spot on the car.

Always good to see you two back at it again. I think some of your viewers and commenters may be missing a point on the Jag. You clearly state that it is your goal to get the car back on the road, not to do an in-depth restoration like you have done with the Mini. It is obvious that the Jag is pretty much far gone when it comes to rust and would just not be viable to restore properly, consequently you will be making repairs rather than restoring. You always do a good job though, so I'm sure it will end up a lot better than when you got it.

nice repair but for all that was left of the sheet-steel between the two parts of the jack-point might have been better to cut it off, remove the screws, separate the 3 parts and transfer it on to your nice new bit of sheet-steel

what thickness of sheet metal do you use for the body repair panels?
@upbuild4397
@upbuild4397 16 дней назад
For this section I used 1.5mm, I use the 1.5mm for any of the floor sections or anything more structural but for body panels and repairs I use 0.8mm as usually there is more shaping to be done in these areas which can be done with the thinner material. Usually all car body panels are around 0.8mm. Regards Mark

What a lashup, welding in rust not attending to the corrosion of the inner sill panel also the seat belt anchor point is weak. When I was panel panel beating in the 60s 70s and 80s all rusted panels were removed and I remade all to original spec to me this is bodgework. No doubt it will all be covered with a thick coating of under seal..

That's a perfect example of why classic vehicles should not be MOT exempt. Previous repairs are shocking, welding, (if you can call it that ) is to a very poor standard. I really hope your getting it mot'd correctly and not just signing the disclaimer to say it's fit for the road. Hats off to you, not easy welding on your back, bet the other side is exactly the same.
