Jaguar XKR project this week: In this episode i manage to purchase and fit a used MAF with matching part numbers for my car, but will it work and sort out my running issue?
Hi Simon, sorry its not the maf. The only time my engine started stalling and acted like yours was when a major vacuum leak was present, that was one of the rubber rings was being sucked by the supercharger between the sc cap and coolers. I also got a smoke machine and had many other leaks but they did not make the engine run rough. After fixing the small leaks my throttle response was great.
@steveduffy1289 hi Steve, good to hear from you buddy. That is my next step, get a smoke test done and see what it throws up. I've also been advised to check the idle control valve, so may have a look at that too 👍
Engine running problems boil down to either a fueling problem or an air problem. But ECMs are usually very good at compensating and allowing an engine to run, even if rough. Whatever the problem is here, the ECM can't compensate enough. It could be multiple issues here. My XK8 is sounding very similar and the issue is a mixture of a blocked cat, which has contaminated the o2 sensors now, together with an air leak, and a dirty MAF! You could benefit from a better diagnostic device, really the Jaguar IDS/SDD is the only one that will properly reset all the codes, reset modules and identify deeper issues. If I am heading down your way I could pop in and plug the car into my laptop.
Hi Jem, thanks for getting touch buddy. I totally agree with your summary. The trouble is that it has been sat for 10 years after having its initial running problem, which was never fixed. Who knows what the original issue was? It's more likely now to be a few things wrong all at the same time. Your offer of running a check is very kind of you. You are most welcome over for a cuppa, whether it was for a social or otherwise 😉 I do have a laptop here, but as I understand it you need an early version of Windows to run the jag software?
@@projectsinthebarn Indeed, I have a laptop running Windows 98 which works fine for the older versions of IDS, and I imagine your XKR will only talk with legacy IDS like mine does. I bit the bullet and bought an upgraded old brick of a computer, and a Mongoose cable. It's a god send!
I feel your pain Simon, this jag has been such a roller coaster of a ride eh, probably like most of our beloved Jags. Keep at it, it is another small tinkering job and another one ticked off that long long list! Keep smiling mate😉👍
Yes its all good experience and you get to know more of the car each time and whens its all done, the sense of pride and achievement will be immense and you'll be the proud owner of one hell of a great XKR.😊👍
What a shame, at least it’s one off the list…. A smoke test sounds like a plan 🤞🤞🤞🤞Sure you will get there, and it’s probably going to be something trivial….
Hi buddy, that is a definite possibility and one I hadn't considered yet. I had better get the diagrams out to see how the valve functions and how it can be adjusted. Good shout mate 👍
You really need to do the o2 sensors especially as they were showing on OBD you did in the summer last year. Watch your video back when you were trying to keep it running there was puffs of smoke from either the rocker cover or the exhaust manifold on the drivers side.
Hi buddy, I agree, the O2 sensors will definitely need to be changed at some stage. I was of the understanding that these sensors would not have an impact on its running from a cold start, only when the engine is up to temperature? Or have i been misinformed on that one? Anyway, as its been stood for so long they will undoubtedly need to be swapped out for new ones I would imagine. I don't recall puffs of smoke from the rocker cover, so that was a great spot if there was, I will go back and check buddy 😉 Thanks again for your input 👍
Smoke test found 3 air leaks on my xkr. 1 around the small hose off the throttle body , supercharger actuator and one under the intercooler. If this helps 👍👍
@alexanderthegreat6480 that is my issue, trying to maintain a steady enough idle to read any trim levels. It definitely makes it a little tricky to diagnose. We will get there though buddy 👍
Still think this is fuel pressure buddy. I had a similar issue years ago and it ran better initially from cold due to rich mixture but then wouldn't rev up properly. Turned out to be fuel pump which I know you have changed but might be faulty
Hi buddy, thanks again for getting in touch. It could well be the pump. My only thing with that is I replaced both pumps as you know. It really only runs on the one pump, and uses the secondary pump in case of the initial pump failing or having issues. This would mean both my pumps are dicky? Deffo worth a pressure test though 👍
Hi buddy, not with a multimeter no. Only by unplugging it whilst running, which did make it stall, so I assumed the wiring is OK. But I'm sure there is a more specific way to test the signal 🤔
Hi Peter, hopefully that massive ex police van outside the barn will be gone next week, so I will be able to have a jiggle around and get it u to the barn at last 😀
Hi buddy, thanks for getting in touch. The only codes I ever get are for random or multiple misfires. Never anything to do with O2 sensors or similar. It's definitely a little boggling 🤔
