Can we at least agree the shots and their framing were wonderful? The shot used to introduce the main villain (which was used again later for rajini towards the end) and the lorries tumbling in front of Mohanlal are some of my favorites shots from any movie this year.

Some of the frames and scenes in Jailer were just too good.. except for that entire segment in andhra (barring kaavaala) which was bad.. like the interval and climax was even better than petta

I think Baddie is being a bit harsh here. I do agree it's not at a Doctor level, but I did not expect this in a Rajini movie The innovation to use Rajini not to perform a single fight sequence but be a hero was amazing. And I do think some of the characters did make an impact.

Baradwaj what a great review... I thought you will brush everything under the carpet but you actually spoke the truth.. to me silly movie, no logic, no emotion & dark comedy genre but no comedy.. one time watchable, forgettable as soon as u walk out.. It's Thalaivar's last few movies before retirement, why not do something that's worthwhile and memorable for the fans?

The film actually worked for me , Nelson's writing is strong , he balanced his story and the image of the superstar doesn't shadow his way of making this time , there wasn't a single moment in the film where I felt like too much super heroish thing , though the plot doesn't have the place for dark humour as much as in his previous films ,i loved the dark comedy here .

I think Jailer's better than Petta IMO. For one, seeing Rajini doing a black comedy but still in his superstardom, a menacing villain who has a funny side as well, the star studded cameos (Especially Shivanna and Mohanlal) personally worked for me, and some clever framing of shots in between. Sure some of the humour is very kid friendly in the first half and the son turning evil is lazy and distasteful (almost a similar but opposite flaw Petta had with VJS), I kinda felt Nelson did his homework this time around and atleast it's way way better than Beast. It's not as good as Doctor or CoCo but still I'll take it as Rajini's most satisfying movie since Petta.

I really loved the witty twist at the end and you won't believe this -while watching the film itself I guessed and told the twist to my frnd. Yet some unnecessary portions would have been trimmed at last 30-45 minutes ..

I watched FDFS in Karnataka, here its altogether a different feel namma Thalaivars swag 🔥 and, shivannas mass 😎 (we Karnataka Tamil people exposed to his class), lalettan's style 🤩 wow theatre was electrifying like stadium for entire movie, one of the bestest vibe movie recently I watched in theatres.

For a person like me who still watches Rajini's Audio launch speeches multiple times a week, this movie worked out really well. Nelson did justice and definitely 150% better than Petta. I cannot still accept Nawaz as villain in Petta with madurai backdrop and VJS as villain in some random city.

When I watched old Rajini movies I went in with the expectation that there will be star power, but also expected that there would themes such as family, women, romance, trust, betrayal, and of course humour. These days I walk into Rajini movies expecting that they are a reflection of modern society and what people like to consume today - revenge, lust, explicit bloodshed and violence, tyrants drunk on power, star worship and a complete lack of deeper values or emotions of any kind, as long as the big scenes in the movie that advertise the hero and the superstar are bigger than the biggest thing. Movies like this are a reflection of modern society and what people today want to see. Especially when they are "mass" movies. All Rajini movies have their moments, this one is no different. But I am disappointed by how the hero and the villain are no different in these movies- they're both portrayed as bloodthirsty, full of vengeance, irreverence and megalomania.

Superstar Thalaivar's movie is to be taken with a pinch of salt. You watch his films for his amazing stylish persona, superstardom, the grandeur and the exciting action mixed with bits of philosophy for life; you don't watch Thalaivar's movie for a story line like the ones you find in Nolan's films, if you expect that - I'm sorry to say, you are in the wrong place. Rajni sir's movie are like a fun filled mass DJ music festival, you cannot expect an Opera musical from his movies.

Agree with this review. Dark Humour expert Nelson was missing. Jokes didn't land much. Flashback wasn't that great. Pettah was really good to watch visually. But in spite of all this, I liked the fact that Rajnikanth was not presented as 100 people fighter as it usually happens in his movies. He is given the swag of that-age in Jailer. He plans and executes through others, doesn't get onto a fist fight every time goons and villains come against him. I liked that treatment.

Just an observation on a larger scale to think about: Is humour in Tamil film-makers’ work almost never sustainable over a long period of time like how the Kamal Hassan - Crazy Mohan films used to have that X factor? I recall Rajesh with SMS, Boss Engira Baskaran, OKOK taking huge downfall after those movies, and I fear if Nelson is going down that path… His dark humour in KK and Doctor was amazing and so promising but unfortunately now, with having big stars to work with, it seems to be fading, sadly.

Great observation. The underlying problem I feel is about the 'My Type' films trend. From Rajesh, now Nelson, and even Lokesh are trying to set their bounds within their 'My Type' films - which obviously doesnt work out after a certain time period. This 'My Type' trend was rarely spotted in the past, and even if witnessed - those directors had the guts to explore outside those bounds time to time which helped them sustain. Example : Sridhar, KSR, Siddhique-Lal

The film worked for me. Genuinely I did feel that the stars were well placed and positioned, despite their screen presence. Although there were many characters , all of them made a mark. And the comedy, worked for me at all places without diluting the overall mood of the scene . Overall it is a well written movie starring the superstar after really long time!

Nelson's work worked for me. He just elevated the presence and entry of all the South super stars. It's purely meant for theatre with mass masala blockbuster content. Rest all can re-watch Interstellar, Schindler's list, Shawshank Redemption.

You have less expectations then the movie would do wonders for you. I loved every bit of it. Finally seeing Rajini doing a role of his age, not dancing and romancing with 20+ year old heroine and not doing stunt by fighting 100 guys. Infact Nelson had given him a sensible role. I am sure this movie would work any one who is sensible.

Was I the only one who thought Rajni's presence was more powerful and better handled in this movie? I actually loved the flashback scene and the audience in my theater lost their minds as well.

Not sure what issue Baddie has but he always gives negative reviews for Thalaivar movies. This guy will find Highlight in films like Master and Beast but acts like Jailer is just another mass movie.

JAILER Recipe: Rajni's Screen presence - 1/4 kg Breaking Bad oru - 1/4 kg, Vikram movie - 100 g, Batsha, Petta ideas - 100 g, Thanga Pathakam climax - 1 Table spoon. Mix it well & Add some Nelson's humour on top of it.

if this GOAT, god save tamil film music. BGM was loud and crass and so much tone changes in few seconds, it is close to unbearable. He did a good job in Vikram, but not this one.

I am surprised by this review. But I have not seen any of Nelson's movies except for Doctor. Maybe things were repeated and get tiring on existing Nelson audiences. I really enjoyed this movie. First half was flawless and the comedy really worked for me. People were laughing loud in the theater. This movie is a mass movie story and the story line is mostly expected and can be guessed except for the final ending. I don't see any additional compromise coming in here as the whole movie and screenplay is set for Rajini.

Movie’s a mixed bag. Is it better than Beast? Yes. It is better than Doctor? No. Is it better than Annathe? Yes. Is it better than Petta? No. It’s just above par in terms of output matching expectations but just below par in terms of what it could really have been.

Positives 1. 15mins before the interval 2. 10mins after the interval 3. CLIMAX (action seq)🔥🔥🔥 4. Rajni (esp the younger version) 🔥🔥🔥 5. Vinayakan does what he does best. 6. Mohanlal (stylish af)🔥🔥🔥 7. Yogi Babu Negatives The rest of the movie is a low with terrible comedy and storylines that seem to be made on the go..... But the 40mins of positives makes up for the rest of it. (the highs are so f high, that you don't see the lows anymore) Overall kickass cinema experience ...... why? Positives 8. Baddy didnt disappoint me, you just spoke my words. 🙏 Poorly executed, with more of slow motions, build ups, forceful bloody scenes, unwanted cameos, all to just push this movie to the maximum with no stuff in the story (which keeps changing every 40 mins in the movie) for me the movie ended in the moment even before the first half when Vinayagan's characters just dropped down with that begging for life scene.

Seriously BR?! Did these boxes not check for you?- 1. How many lead iconic stars accept roles that are pitted against their own blood? Thangapadhakkam, Nallavanukku nallavan?? 2. How about no punch dialogues, typical Rajniisms and no action sequences till almost the end? 3. How about restoring the belief in masses that movie going experience is the ultimate socialistic movement beating all the web series, reels, tiktok crap? 4. Finally- get this, People that sat next to me are non-tamils, NRI college kids that are twice removed from Rajni's generation, that cant believe why Bollywood doesnt invite southern superstars over for cameos. Relax your blinders a little bit please!

The problem with the movie is, rajni is never shown vulnerable. Why would mafia don be so loyal to a jailer anyways? Whatever, first half is good coz of more impulsive action and second half falters as it has more alternative reality sold to the henchmen of villian. Can't we ever see a film where hero is insulted like in arunachalam, or bankrupted as in shivaji, or helplessness as that of kamal feels in hospital flashback of indian? Am i asking more? May be still i am oldschool.

Hey Reviewer, You misinterpreted the plot by a huge margin here. Its actually a story of a father who lost his son and later suffers from Alzheimer at Stage-5, Starts hallucinating with the characters projected from his past. All the cameos are his mental projections which is clearly highlighted by Nelson with a cigar queue. Muthuvel Pandiyan never returned home ever since he walked out of the home at mid-night. Recollect what RamyaK said that it was you the main reason why her son died, that justifies the climax.

For once I disagree with BR! Jailer was good! A movie that has done justice to the package that was being looked for since Petta! I felt it was better than petta in a lot of instances. The review is subjective and not just this one! But for an overall package, it was worth watching! And needless to say that Thalaivar was nothing short of 🔥.

Huge fan of your works sir but this feels completely contrasting to what the theatre audience and myself experienced today morning, none of this feels like a a review on jailer .. either you fell asleep or you can only accept commercial films from vijay and ajith, you were not this harsh on Beast or Vaarisu or Bigil which were just unwatchable for many. Only thing I can accept is thay doctor has a better screenplay but there were so many good things in Jailer that worked like magic on theatre and this was a completely fresh Rajini film quite contrary to his previous works depending on his nostalgia, it almost felt like Nelson forgot he had Rajini in the film and did what he usually does.

Exactly my thoughts as well on the movie. The dark comedy or whatever it was just don't land and it gives ample breathing space to think about all the logical flaws in the movie. The mass scene also lacks good writing, the twist for it to work doesn't have any sort of character establishment at all. Very poorly written movie taking a classic 70s movie as reference.

Ppl go to Rajnikant movie to get Rajinified and entertainment purpose. And we are quite satisfied with Jailer. If we had done so much of technical analysis in the movies like Padayappa, Badsha or Muthu, Then.....
