I spent 5 years in Port Blair in the late 90s, and the slow but steady erosion of the ecosystem because of runaway tourism was apparent even then. Domestic tourism has grown manifold since then, and local governments seem to have little interest in protecting the ecological balance. So should we really ‘develop’ the Lakshadweep Islands for tourism. I think not. I’ve been to Androth, Kavaratti, Agatti and Bangaram as well, and I’m quite sure the ecology is very fragile and would not withstand the onslaught of domestic tourists for long.

Where's the need for Mr Jaishankar to show the Maldivian minister the fruits of Indian largesse , as if the latter is ignorant of these.
