Jakob seems very intelligent after watching all of his interviews over the years and I think he has a disdain for dumb or rhetorical questions. He considers himself a professional and probably expects the same around him.
Sports press in track & field was always professional, never disrespectful, at least would be rare. Lately since this competition between these 2 guys started, press started to add some of its toxicity to the sport, and to their questions
I don't think he's being cocky. He's just saying it as matter of fact. kinda like Magnus Carlsen, his fellow countryman who plays chess and is also the world's #1.
Exactly! He knows he's the only one actually targeting the WR and others are running for medals at best and that there's no genuine contender when he guns for super fast times.
@@alansamuel2454 We shouldn't guess at who is is targeting what because we don't know and most do not discuss the matter publicly. The reality is that all of the main protagonists are most likely to be targeting the gold next month rather than any WR because it is the biggest event of all to win....plus Jakob wants to be only the second man to retain an Olympic title over 1500m. Jakob's big disadvantage though in Paris is that he is not the fastest finisher, albeit not very far off, so needs the race to be super quick to kill the finish in others like Josh and Timothy but this time without the help of pacemakers which are not allowed by the IOC.
@@david2804me True with regards to the Olympics not usually being WR season but in general, it's obvious Jakob is aiming for the WR's. No need for it to be said. He's actually attempted to and succeeded in some already and is now not too far in the 1500 and mile and even the immortal 3000 m considering his 2 time time. Kerr has a different goal, medals, he's not really tried to go for any WR. I don't think he has the potential to either. I can give you that it will be harder for Jakob to win gold without the Pacers, but I will place my bets on him this time. Let's wait and see.
@@alansamuel2454 well you’re good at mind-reading then because I wouldn’t pretend to know what anyone’s intentions are. Guesswork aside, it would be crazy brave for Jakob to go for a WR in an Olympic final if that’s what you meant. He is clearly close enough now to be capable of the WR but he is not so far ahead of at least a couple of others to not risk screwing it up by running himself too fast and out of medal contention. It’ll be a great watch.
@@david2804me Bro please be real, Jakob went for the WR in the 2 mile and the 2000 m and got it. He doesn't run with pacers simply for the fun of it, he's trying to ascertain how far he's from the WR and wants to break it for sure. He's been doing this from a long time, he's held back for years from doing things all out and only in the last few years has he started making serious momentum towards the WR's. He doesn't have to do it to win most championships, there's hardly anyone who can keep pace once he's at that speed although most improved massively themselves kinda like Rudisha did but he ain't got any competition forcing his hand. He's running with pacers and the occasional insane time only so he can eventually get the WR's. But yes, that means he can't run that fast in major races like the Olympics where no pacers are allowed, I can agree with that. In fact, I said exactly that he ain't going to run a WR in the Olympic final, I meant outside of major championships he's aiming for the WR's. Most likely it will be won in a time of 3:28 or 3:29.
He is right. He is the standard and when he's beat its by someone running there best they ever ran hah. Without him in the race they'd never even run like that. He's at that level where he brings the best outta anyone in the field
The interviewer's question was very valid considering what happened in the Olympic final. Overall he's still the best middle distance runner active today.
That was a funny question when the guy said that he was only good with pace setters. ha ha. I guess the reporter missed the other races when Jakob was the pace setter.
@@waxwars9183 Josh Kerr made this statement about Jakob only running great with pacers. I think he was playing into that to get a reaction. I did enjoy his subtle jab at Kerr for only showing up once in a while
I'm amazed that Hicham's record still stands given the new era of carbon shoes, bouncy tracks and wave light technology. Wonder what kind of time he would have put up in today's era. :)
@@cxcxcxcxcxcfgchgcfib089hj how are the athletes of today passing drug tests? Micro-dosing must be an art form, or someone is being paid off. It can't be just Kenyan athletes and Mo Katir. :)
@@cxcxcxcxcxcfgchgcfib089hj he would likely be microdosing like most of the other elite middle distance runners; surprised that so few have actually been caught (Katir, few Kenyan runners).
Dead right. He's there every race. Kerr 3rd at the Olympics then gone for 3 years and he's back now. Wightman run a couple of ok races then won worlds and now gone again. Nuguse hoare cheryuiot they all come and go. Jakob is always there and right now is the fastest he's ever been. He has to be favourite. Doesn't mean he will but I hope he gets it done again.
All true but Cheruiyot was not a come and go type. He was the 4th fastest in 2016, 2nd fastest in 2017, had the seasons best from 2018 to 2021, and remained in the top 5 performances from 2022 to 2024 except 2022 where he was 8th best only. For a couple of years, he WAS the man to beat, even for Jakob. One Olympics gold, one WC gold, one WC silver, 5 diamond leagues from 2016 to 2021 sure is consistent. But yea he sort of was happy with 3:28 and victories and I don't think he had the hunger or even belief he could get the WR which Jakob does and has had for a long time. Jakob wants to WRs in everything from the 1500 to the 5000 and I think he can do it except maybe not the 5000. The remaining athletes, they sure are.
@alansamuel2454 yeah your right. TC obviously struggled with some injuries for a couple years but he's back running well. 2 or 3 years ago 3.28 would win the race. Now he's 30 mtrs back haha.
@@Angrylittleboys Yes lol it's pretty shocking how 3:28 would be without question the top in most years and now that standard's changed to 3:27 and 3:26.
I see he is definitely gracing us with much more humility. Listen guys if Jakob just ran this world lead. Kerr beat him in Eugene and is probably is just as good shape. It will be a showdown!
Imagine if he could concentrate on running a WR and not have to worry about peaking for a championship every year for what, 5 years including next years worlds? 2026 might see some times that will blow us away!
@jonasf He has not run 3:24 or 3:25 he has not broken 3000m record not even close . He has zero records that had stood for 25 or more years. He can’t be the greatest but he can be one of the best time will tell : only time.
@@robford3211 Craziest thing ive ever heard. He is not close to the 3000 record?? This must be a joke. He has not even tried to break the 3000 in a time trial WR attempt. When he does decide, he will break that as we've seen his 2 mile demolition of the prior WR by KOmen which a lot of people thought was untouchable. That performance was already worth a 7:20. Then he ran a 7:23 while being sick. Lol, 0 records. So there's that 2 mile record, which everyone though no one was ever going to break, then there's the 2000 meter record which was held by El G. Only other person in the conversation is El g but Jakob is faster in the 5,000. I have never seen a guy blast a 3:26 but who is also able to just toy with a top 5000 field. Has never happened and may never happen again
@@jonasf4065El G had 5000m potential too but never really focused on it. But of course neither gas Jakob and honestly they both should not focus on it.
the greatest? First: one shoul separate sprinters and long distance runners (for me midle distance runners are in this gategory). If we are talking about later ones to me the greatest is Said Aouita who took medal in the 800m in Seoul 1988 and could have won 10 000m at the time... Ingebrigtsen is great of cause and I believe that he will win 1500m in Paris but I dont think he is the greates of all time yet.
Hey---let's talk turkey & be 100% honest----joshy boi isn't really even part of the equation. @ 3:26& 3:43----Jakob is in a rarified class all his own. Results prove everything
@@tedallison6112I think Jakob will win, but Josh Kerr is absolutely part of the equation. He has been beter so far, this year, I think most people will have Jakob as the favorite but never celebrate early
@@jellekraak7930 --Sure, but their lifetime record profoundly distinctly favors Jakob. Be honest---Jacob coming back from injury & runningv3:45? That shows the proverbial writing on the wall; & even tho he isn't even coached by his dad anymore, has clearly demonstrated a deep burning desire to succeed where Kerr for me merely looks like a guy w a chip on his shoulder.... showing his innate insecurities. Jakob is the absolute opposite.
@@jellekraak7930 better...Josh has been AWOL since their last race and Jabok was been winning races and undefeated since. Jakob doubled and won the Euro championship.
@@Oslolumi Thanks for the info. I see now too that El Gerrouj actually ran 5 times inside 3:27 which is astonishing. Paris is going to be fun...I just hope that all of the protagonists are 100% fit on the day and that we have a great race worthy of the amazing talent that is out there atm.
Yes he looked phenomenal but there are no rabbits at the Olympics. He will have to hammer from the front solo and use a lot more energy which will make him more vulnerable than a time trial like this
jakob has won many big races without pace setters. jakob has also beaten josh kerr more times than not. despite josh kerr being 2-0 against jakob as of late, jakob is still the favorite
where has did uninformed take come from. how many championship titles has Jakob won without rabbits which are statically and historically quick...very poor logic.
@@curtismiller319 he’s lost the last 2 world 1500s. Not saying he can’t win, I’m just saying running 326 doesn’t change much of the conversation. He could probably solo 328 which a handful of guys can hang on to. If he doesn’t drop Kerr it’ll be 0-3 in the last 3 years
Jakob is clearly a first class athlete. However, he lacks the ability to run a 50/51 second or 24/25 second last 400m/200m in a 1500m. That’s how JW and JK beat him. When it gets fast he’s quickly in trouble. JK will beat him again if the pace is fast from the start and is able to sit in to the final 200/300m and accelerates to 50 second 400m pace. 40 years ago Cram had the ability to run classic quick final 400m 🎉
Jokob can clearly run faster splits than JK. Jakok 1500 pb is 3:26.73 or mile 3:43.73 JK 1500 pb is 3:29.05 and mile 3:45.34 If they both run their best races Josh is beat and might not podium. Can JK beat him yes...but history tell us it's unlikely unless kerr is fitter than ever.
@@curtismiller319 it’s not simply a matter of pb’s and fitness . 3:27 is around 56.5 seconds per 400m . My point is JI has poor top end speed so a final lap of 51 seconds will beat him. It will be down to him to make the pace fast enough so it drops everyone else. I still think he’ll be beaten in the 1500m and win the 5000m
@@DavidBlack-ki5fc we will see! He did say in a press conference that he thinks he can run a bit faster so hopefully we are in for something special. I feel like it will be fast also I suspect Jakob would probably go at the 800 mark rather than 400.
Classless as always. A time trial is not a championship race though, Kerr would lecture him again on how to race in Paris. Jakob would take the lead from 1k and feel hopeless from 200m out when Kerr is on his shoulders.
