Dee Brown: The FULL CAREER STORY of an NBA Slam Dunk Contest ICON | FPP

He helped put Reebok on the map; He turned in one of the greatest dunk contest performances of all time as the first Boston Celtic to participate and win the Dunk Contest, and he had the difficult task of trying to take the reigns of the storied Celtics after the sudden death of Reggie Lewis. And although Dee Brown’s career looks underwhelming, he was a very talented player when he came in the league, and looked like he could be a perfect complement to Reggie Lewis for years to come, but he would suffer a major knee injury before his second NBA season and never truly get back to who he was. Then as Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish each left the team, all while they were reeling from the loss of Reggie Lewis, Brown had a lot of the spotlight put on him, and while he couldn’t live up to high expectations of Celtics fans, there’s not many that can, and Brown did a good job being a bright spot during a down period of Celtics Basketball. As his years went on, his injuries got worse and the Celtics went in a different direction, but he would still have some productive years with a young Toronto Raptors team, as a great veteran alongside Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady. His career ended after a couple of years with the Orlando Magic in the early 2000s, before he embarked on another career in coaching. But when talking about his playing career, when he was healthy he was better than he gets credit for, and played in the NBA for over a decade; and if he’s not going to get credit for his entire career, at least he’ll always be remembered for the 1991 NBA Dunk Contest and his Reebok Pumps.

91-92 Celtics was one of those teams that had a great mix of veteran presence and youth that I feel gets overlooked because of their relatively modest success compared to their dominance in the 80's. Great video on someone who was a good roleplayer on that team. Would love to see Matt Harpring or Danny Manning in the future.

Bird was on his last legs and only played 45 games that year but still put up 20, 9 and 6 a game, Reggie Lewis was in his prime and put up 20 a game as well.

One missing piece they could've signed from overseas as they draft and stashed a few years back- Dino Radja. Would been huge help in the early 90s.

I remember telling people around me, that Dee Brown was a better player than the Celtics gave him credit for. Boston really underutilized Dee Brown. I am not even a Celtics fan, but I have a habit of studying different players.

Dee Brown was a dynamic point guard with a quick first step, nice mid range game & a pesky Defender who can disrupt an opposing team offense. His acrobatic AND1 layups brought a different element to Celtics basketball that, quite frankly, had never been seen before. I watched his whole tenure as a Celtic & I can say he left it all on the floor & he truly bleeds green. True Celtic Captain. Now let’s talk about his Hops. His one of the few players in NBA history who at 6”1 catches lobs in a half court offense. In EVERY GAME. Dee hadSerious bunnies & we haven’t seen a lil guy dunk so often in decades. Maybe since Steve Francis. Dee brown thanks for the memories. And also thank you to the uploader for this incredible vid paying homage to a severely underrated player. Now let me watch the vid. I’m only 1 sec in lol

Dee Brown before his knee injury was a insanely athletic guy. You mentioned he was quick but he was fast too. Was hard to keep up with him racing down the court and the guy had crazy hops as well. Like the one clip you showed where he blocks the shot and has to avoid his head hitting the backboard and looked like he almost touched the backboard with his back shoulders. The no look, face in the inner elbow dunk is also HIGHLY understated. As a kid born in the early 80’s growing up I tried this dunk (of course on a lower goal😂) so many times and it’s not real easy if you legit do it like he did. Someone tried to replicate it in a recent dunk contest and guy didn’t even do it till after he’d dunked the ball😂

Dee Brown was exciting to watch. The only weakness I bet saw in him was the injuries-never his size. Two way player, after the dunk contest win he definitely proved he was a complete player. Thanks for giving him his flowers.

Tragedy deprived us of a Len Bias/ Reggie Lewis/ Dee Brown Celtics trio in the 90s... Not to mention a past his prime Dino Radja. The mid 90s Celtics were pretty abysmal, but as a New England kid, they were my introduction to the NBA and acted as my season pass, as I watched nearly every game.

A big what if is why it took so long for Dino Radja to come to the Celtics as he was drafted in 89. Didnt arrive until 93-94 when the Cs are already fallen off. Would been huge help in the 91-92 season. Also Chris Ford was not a good head coach may have stunted Dee Browns development as he played a lot of veterans. Back in those days until Pitino, it was any coach coming from the KC Jones/Bill fitch tree.

You are fishing on this one. Dee Brown was quite a disappointment for a Celtics fan. I guess you could say unfulfilled potential but it was more like he just was not at the caliber of his peers at his position in the league. Journeyman.

As devastating as the deaths of Len Bias and Reggie Lewis were Rick Pitino set them back another decade with his horrible moves as the gm. He got rid of David Wesley, Rick Fox and Dee all very good players who would have fit in perfectly with a young Antoine Walker. Not to mention him drafting his former Kentucky shooting guard Ron Mercer who most knew should not have been taken that high and trading Chauncey Billups thirty games into the season. Pitino era was an absolute disaster.
