Always on a quest to learn new stuff, James is tripping down the Macro rabbit hole! We're building a new Macro camera rig for underwater photo and videos.
Gear used in this video:
Camera: bit.ly/DR_GH5S
Housing: bit.ly/DRCameraHousing
Port: bit.ly/DRMacroPort
Lights: bit.ly/DRMW4300
Snoot: bit.ly/DR_Snoot
Bold filters: bit.ly/DR_BoldFilters
Pastel Filters: bit.ly/DR_PastelFilters
Muck stick: bit.ly/DR_MuckStick
I'm taking my new rig down to the sand to find some little critters and try to get my settings dialed in. Macro video is incredibly hard!
Thanks as always for watching!

Well done mate. Not bad at all for your first try underwater. Looking forward to seeing your skills in person during our Philippines trip. Wohoo... 🤗

Great vid James... May I suggest heading up to Riviera Beach and Phil Foster park. Check out the guys at either Force-E or Pura Vida Divers. Both have guides to show you all the muck there at ~20'... no deco required. Safe diving. ~B

Good stuff. Those tiny critters are the reason I dive.

Great Video James as usual. I can totally relate and appreciate you sharing your kit extension and first steps in the macro realm with us. How exciting! A few weeks ago I took a macro photo workshop at the blue heron bridge thru reef photo and video, trying out all my new macro gear (100mm macro lens and port) for the very first time. Deciding while having the opportunity within the workshop to also try the backscatter mini flash with a snoot and a macro diopter😂 (Knowing that it was going to to be a steep learning curve, I brought that on myself, but I am very glad I did…). I didn’t use the combination like that all the time, but toggled between the different options depending on the subject and situation. It was the most challenging, most fun and most frustrations time ever! And I think the blue heron bridge is just the best macro subject dive site. Nothing beats a 145minute dive on a single steel 80. That gave me plenty of time to try stuff, mess up and try it again. Looking forward to future macro videos, or any videos really. Thank you for making so much educational and entertaining content. Always excited to see a new video to pop up! Cheers!

Love Backscatter. Since moving to the Caribbean I've really gotten into underwater photography. I wish I would have know you were an affiliate at Backscatter as I've recently spent a significant portion of my children's inheritance with them. Great video as usual. Informative and fun.

Does this mean you'll be meeting up with Justin/Critter Hunter? I've just tried my Olympus TG-6, on just a beginner level, and getting used to carrying a baby "rig" (if you can call it that) and buoyancy control is tough. I wish I could dive on a regular basis for practice. Maybe a video of disassembling and cleaning gear in the future? Have fun in Dumaguete!

Idk if it’s something you’d consider doing but I’d say a video on stuff like back kick, helicopter turns, flutter kick, frog kick would be helpful or even just skills of that nature

Nice video James. Any plans on strobe lighting? I know you do a lot of video, could you have one strobe light and one video light on your rig?

Actually as humans, we are growing and dying at the same time. Hopefully we are growing at a faster rate than we are dying!!!! 😎

Nice! I’m getting into it too. Biggest issue is lack of patience within myself and my dive buddy wife haha

Hi James, love your videos. I’m a new diver (Advanced PADI with 25 dives) and slowly putting together my own gear. Thank you so much for the video on the first five items a new diver should invest in. I have a computer I’m very happy with (Suunto D5) and now I’m a bit overwhelmed with the options for analog gauges. Do I want a stand-alone compass that retracts or do I want 3 gauges in one? Do I want them in line or do I want them on opposite sides? Is it hard to flip that over and read the other side? Is it hard to read a compass and hold it flat if it’s attached to the other gauges? For a new diver, is it worse to have one more thing dangling off you while you dive? Do you already have a video answering these questions? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

General advice is wrist mounted compass, with SPG and depth gauge on your hose.

Great Video. I have recently started diving because of watching the channel (PADI Open Water 16 dives.) I recently watched your video on the 5 first things to buy as a new diver. I have been looking at regulators. Would you recommend the Aqualung Leg3nd.

Hi James. since I watched your video about the long hose configuration set up, I am interesting to change my set up from standard set up to long hose set up. I was wondering which hose length would suite me best 150 or 210 for a single tank as I have smaller body size. thanks

Hi James, was this on the Spiegel? Was on the same boat with you diving that wreck a couple months ago. Great meeting you, and I hope you get really good at macro so I can get all the info from future vids.

I'm not a photographer, but I think it would be weird to not have some pictures and video of at least some of my dives. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with a Go Pro + light rig of some sort before too long.

Hello James. Not sure if it's depicted in this video but I have seen some of your shots that show you primary 2nd stage routing under your arm up to your mouth. What configuration are you in, and what's the rationale behind it? Thanks.

In this video I'm diving my rebreather. When I dive OC long hose, yes, the hose is routed under the arm to allow for easy donation to an OOA buddy.

James, wouldn’t it have been better to go shallow and have more time to play/test your new setup?

I learned that a shit load of camera 📷 money doesn't mean you can take cover photos.
