Two serious British military men showing as much emotion as they ever would.
@janeenr
@janeenr Год назад
James and his Dad Charles are both former British Army officers who both saw active service. (James a Captain, Charles a Colonel) Charles was dying from stage 4 kidney failure at the time of this filming. Thankfully a kidney donor was eventually found for Charles. James sang this as a tribute to his Dad. For a soldier to show such raw emotion and vulnerability is very brave. Charles, as always, is still very stoic. (British stiff upper lip, don't show emotion). So for him to put his hand on James' arm was very touching. This song was recorded in one take. All proceeds from this song were donated to veterans charities. So much respect for James. He does a lot for veterans charities.

Both served as officers in the British Armed Forces, when James (a Captain) was heading out to battle in Kosovo his father said to him "we're just 2 men saying goodbye" By this he meant he saw James as his equal, not his child - so Jame explained it in a TV interview

James's dad had stage 4 kidney disease and would die with out a transplant (he only had 1 kidney because he had been a live donor in the past) James and his sisters weren't compatible. This song was recorded in one take and after the video everyone in the studio was crying and James' dad said ' what's all this fuss I'm not gone yet'. After the video was released a distant cousin saw it, came forward and was a match. The transplant worked and his dad is still alive. All proceeds from the song were donated to Help For Hero's a UK veterans charity as both James and his dad had been in the army.

They said the only one with dry eyes was Charles Blount and he asked, why is everyone crying? I'm still here. Interestingly, his father had been a living kidney donor prior to getting sick. Both Charles and James are British veterans.

His father was dying and they couldn’t find a match for him to receive a lifesaving kidney transplant then a distant cousin matched and gave him his kidney and saved his life. When James wrote this song he believed his dad only had a short time left on earth! Thank god they still have each other! 🙏♥️

“Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying.......... *Real Men Do Cry Darling* 💗

On the "chase the monsters away", it's like reverting back to his childhood, your Dad always would chase any monsters from under your bed away, now it was his turn.
@user-cb2xb5tj5d
@user-cb2xb5tj5d 2 года назад
It's a great line in that it likely has at least a double-meaning for James and his father, who both served in the British Army. As you stated, there's the childhood sense of safety bestowed by a father's comforting presence. And then there's a son following in his father's military footsteps -- his turn to chase the "monsters" away. James served six years. In June of 1999 his troop led the NATO peacekeeping mission into Pristina, Kosovo.

@@user-cb2xb5tj5d I think the whole song like life is about reversing roles between parents and children as they get older. From reading stories to them folding their clothes on the chair telling them to sleep well.

Stiff British upper lip. By saying ‘we’re just two grown men saying goodbye’ is his way of pretending they are just parting, as they used to do when both in the military. James and his father have a very loving relationship, hence the distress he shows.
@adruiddrummer8841
@adruiddrummer8841 2 года назад
Definitrly look it up in case I get some details wrong, but I believe James' dad was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure and they couldn't find a donor match so this was literally James realizing that he was losing his dad while he still had the chance to say goodbye. Turns out, after they put this video out with his dad a distant relative saw it, reached out, and was a match so Papa Blunt was able to have the surgery and recover. ❤❤

I go on these song reactions video binges and I've seen probably 50 of the "Monsters" reaction videos and I have yet to see someone NOT cry while watching it. Everyone has cried or majorly teared up, but mainly outright crying. Everytime. Everyone. I find that's one of the most authentic reactions to have and, especially in regards to "Monsters" you WILL feel something, it's raw emotion and it shows you're human. Plus looking at the pain in his face you can't help but feel it too. Anyways, GREAT REACTION VIDEO!!!

It is or was so easy to not cry for sh*t. But 12 years ago I lost my dad to cancer. I was lucky to go back home and take care of him for 3 months. But when the strongest man you know tells you “I’m done. I tap out” and me to get ready for that was crushing. Then 9 years later I get told I have stage 4 colon cancer and I will never beat it. EVER FU*IN DAY I THINK I WOULD KILL A MILLION PEOPLE. Just to give me a hug and tell me we got this. You gonna be ok son. I don’t have that and I need that so much

At this point his dad had around a month to live as he only had one kidney (having donated one) and a match could not be found for him. This was a live recording of James singing it for the first time to his dad, just the 2 of them. The record company wanted to autotune the crying out but James refused. This video got him a donor from a distant relative in Australia.

A lot of reactors get stuck on the bit where he says "I'm not your son, your not my father", and go off on the wrong tangent and I don't know how they don't understand what he's saying, to make what's happening easier of father and son he views it through two grown men saying goodbye.
