I recently obtained a James Eadie Caol Ila finished in Palo Cortado casks, but mine is eleven years old and bottled at 56.5% ABV... I'm looking forward to opening it soon!
Alan, sounds very good! Got a 3 bottle sampler and 1 is the Caol Ila 12, my first. I'm still cautious about IBs but do love 2 different Signatory CS Series. Also enjoyed a couple of GMacPs. CHEERS!
Alan this ticks all the boxes , we have managed to work our way thru several James Eadie expressions and all absolutely fabulous. The Dailuaine 12 Hogshead finished in Olorosso 55.5% is an absolute belter
@@thewhiskyfriend I think you’re spot on. Last year it was all indies I purchased. The Palo Cortado Sherry finish brings an excellent flavour profile to the distillate. I’ve spent more time with The Old Perth and Mermaid Icons of Campbelltown both exceptional! Also loving TB 7yo and Adelphi Laudale Daluaines
Looking at this review and some of the comments it looks as though James Eadie might have a couple of Palo Cortado casks. They might have one which they used to finish a number of different batches. Mine was 11 years old (59.3%). I also had a fine Glen Moray 10 (57.3%) Oloroso finish. I liked that so much I got a second bottle. By the way, I love sherry and have a pretty neat collection. I've visited a lot of the bodegas in Andalucia. Honestly, when it comes to whisky maturation or finishes there's no difference between Amontillado or Palo Cortado. You (anybody) would be guessing in a blind tasting. Some independent bottlers have priced themselves out of my interest level and I'm sorry to say Berry Bros and G&M are two of them which is a real shame. I like Eadie and Rattray but there's also a lot of good private casks from individual retailers too. Cheers Alan. WT
Alan, thanks for the excellent review. I haven't tried any James Eadie because they have only just recently (~2 weeks) appeared in my market, NZ. I looked at one of their cheapest bottlings, the Linkwood 10, batch, 46%, but found that the price here ranged from 33% to 45% above UK pricing--~UKP45 according to last month's dramface review & online search of UK retailers. You mentioned this bottle cost ~UKP80, but it's priced here at either side of UKP100, so that suggests a possible pattern. I can't be sure but suspect the local importer is taking a greedy cut. Very disappointing as I'd heard very good things about James Eadie as a bottler. For comparison, it's difficult to generalise but Scotch malts often are ~10-20% dearer here than there, but there are exceptions where it's more than that. NZ doesn't have as high/punitive taxes as e.g. Australia. As to reviews, yes, please do review some IBs if you have the opportunity.
Hey Al,how goes it fella,to say I'm a james eadie fan boy would be an understatement, touching 40 bottleings i think to date, there whisky is incredible, natural and non chill filter, even there small batch releases at 46% are great value and again full of flavour, cheers to you all,
Definitely any of the linkwood they bring out, you'll find they use a number of different sherry casks, also glen spey, glen or or glen mullan, they bought out a 23 year old port dundas about 3 months before Christmas, yes a grain whisky but at £85 a bottle, it's stunning and yes I have this bottle it's also fantastic, told you I was a fan boy 😂🥃🥃
Hello Allan, i would suggest to you, try the Indie Bottler Van Wees from the Netherlands with its Label "The Ultimate“. I had a few from them and all where very fair priced and at least good Quality. So see no Risk in trying somthing from them. Greetings 😎👋
