My dad is good friends with Jimmy Fox the drummer. I remember him coming around the house when I was a kid and taught me how to do a drum roll when I was learning to play drums. Really cool guy. He was at my wedding.
That bass line is a real hidden gem if you focus on it. Lots of variation and still locked in solid with the drums. That's where the funk in Funk #49 lives.
Jim Fox killing it on drums, too. One of the best power trios of all time. Saw one of their reunion shows at Blossom Music Center a while back. Was like just as good as ever. There's a Howard Stern show where they do this live right before that, which is on youtube. Totally magical.
Joe Walsh from way back, and still jamming out! Walk Away should be next up from The James Gang, or else Funk #48. Joe Walsh has a good amount of excellent music. Keep bringing it.
They are from Cleveland, Ohio. And they get back together now and then to play short tours (when Joe is not doing his Eagles thing, or solo work). For his solo work you will like Rocky Mountain Way (Joe is one of the best slide players around) and also Life's been Good (to me so far)" which shows off Joe's really great sense of humor (his interviews are a treat). Enjoy!
This Jam is immediately imprinted on your brain when you hear it. The remarkable guitaring Joe Walsh is attributable to this and can and will almost defiantly make you feel the energy. Add the guitars to the bass, and the screaming hot lyrics and vocals, and you find yourself lost in the Rock & Roll Funk that was the 70s. Great pick, as always, guys. You should give their song "Walk Away" & "Woman" a listen.
3 guys. They from Cleveland. Joe Walsh is the singer, guitarist, song writer. Went on to a solo career, check out Rocky Mountain Way by Joe. Then joined the Eagles, the first album he made with them was Hotel California. He’s a monster!
Joe Walsh, the guitarist, also is responsible for Jimmy Page’s No 1 guitar. Joe had the 1959 Gibson Les Paul originally, and had some work done on it in a shop in Chicago. He didn’t like it and convinced Jimmy to buy it from him for $500.00. He used it when they recorded the second album. He always refers to it as his No 1. As to the reaction, I’ve always loved James Gang, and I even saw Joe Walsh live during his solo career. He is one of my favorite guitarists.
Joe was a rock Icon before, during and after the Eagles... in fact he helped them become the iconic band they are. The Eagles heard his album and said "we wanna sound like that...!" "Joe is an interesting bunch of guys.." ~ Glenn Frey Joe's spoken word/playing guitar video explaining how he wrote "Life's Been Good'' is Amazing..! He's really a funny guy.
When the James Gang toured with the Who during the time of this song, as a gesture of gratitude, Joe Walsh gifted Pete Townshend a 1959 Gretsch 6120 with a Fender Bassman amp. Pete had been using Gibson SGs but Gibson changed the design of them and Pete didn't care for the way the new models sounded, and he was struggling to find the tone he wanted. This new Gretsch guitar and Fender amp combo blew Pete away. He says it was and is the loudest guitar he'd ever owned or will own. It become the foundation of the Who's sound for all of Who's Next and Quadrophenia. So thanks Joe Walsh for being integral to some great Who music in the 70s!!!!
This dude is a Rock icon. James gang, then a huge solo career, and then The Eagles asked him to join one of the top Rock Bands in the world. Joe is a legend and a great guy. More Please. Thanks
I love Joe Walsh's guitar riffs. James Gang was an American rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1966. The band went through a variety of line-up changes until they recorded their debut album as a power trio consisting of Joe Walsh, Tom Kriss, and Jim Fox. Dale Peters replaced Kriss on bass for the band's second and third album. As much as I love Funk #49.... their song "Walk Away" was their biggest hit.
You'll be interested to know that it was lead singer and guitarist Joe Walsh who convinced Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin to use a Gibson Les Paul guitar instead of a Telecaster. He insisted Page purchase his Les Paul and that became his favorite guitar to use in the studio and live.
That was a great song, another great song by the James gang is The Bomber it includes a rock version of Ravel's Bolero which really sounds cool on an electric guitar.
It's only three guys playing - drums, bass, and guitar. I believe I heard Joe Walsh say in an interview once that he left the James Gang because he was tired of playing both lead and rhythm guitar AND singing lead, all at the same time.
Hey Fellas. Early Joe Walsh. He was always great. The James Gang, his solo career, and The Eagles. Shout out to you guys for reacting to this one. Peace.
Oh hell yeah! Great tune to fire up my morning - like others have said below, Joe Walsh is an underappreciated genius, and this riff will stay in your head for a good long time. Always great rocking out with you guys - much love from Canada!
"Funk #49" brought the James Gang, and especially Joe Walsh, to everyone's attention back in the day. Had the opportunity to see Joe live twice, and he delivered everything I wanted, and then he delivered some more. He is sooooo talented, and he is really funny and serious at the same time. A true genius of Rock and Roll.
JAMES GANG, "FUNK #49". 3 man band out of Cleveland Ohio. Young Joe Walsh lead singer and Guitar professional. More, "WALK AWAY", "THE BOMBER", "TEND MY GARDEN".
I went to see Jimi Hendrix in Memphis in June of 1970. The James Gang, a band I never heard of previously, opened the show. Unfortunately, Jimi was in bad shape that night, apparently severely high and/or drunk. He was at least an hour late and played for less than an hour. Sadly he would overdose and die three months later. The James Gang gave a great performance playing songs from this album, and I became a fan, buying the album the following week. "The Bomber" is a great song on the album.
Before their shows, the band would warm up with jams that they numbered. This one was number 49 and funky, so when they decided to record it, they named it Funk #49.
@russelbarnes is totally right! Those were og Licks. This album came out 1969--72. 3 piece band. Try "turned to stone" or Rocky Mountain Way. Nice job, young folk!
If you guys want to get a better feel of just how talented Joe Walsh is, watch his visit to Daryl's House (Daryl Hall's music jam session show). Phenomenal live performances there.
You guys are so freaking lucky to be hearing all the songs you react to the very first time. I was born in 1960 so I grew up on these songs. btw, Joe Walsh (mostly of The Eagles fame) on both lead and rhythm guitar and lead vocals 🔥
One of the great things about music from the 60s and 70s is that colour was irrelevant. It was all about the music and that was all that mattered. Rock 'n' Roll wasn't just music. It was social change. ♥
Wow this takes me waaay back! Haven't heard it in a long time - It does have a lot going on but there is no mistaking who it is with Joe Walsh when it gets going. Very cool, nostalgic vibe🍂 Thanks guys for taking me down memory lane with this 'funky' tune!🧡
Good song. The Bomber (A. Closet Queen/B. Bolero/C. Cast Your Fate To The Wind) is great. Stop, Take a Look Around, Collage, Walk Away, The Devil is Singing Our Song & From Another Time are really good too.
Next..The Bomber. Same album. When I became of age My mama sat me down, said Son, you're growing up, it's Time you looked around So I began to notice Some things I hadn't seen before That's what brought me here Knockin' on your back door...
One of the great guitar players/frontman that nobody talks about. Joe Walsh rocks as a matter of fact a little Rocky Mountain Way is probably something you both should hear!!!!! Awesome reaction🎸🎸🎸🎸
They are from Ohio. Check out Joe Walch's solo work . The Eagles were a great band before Joe Walsh. I saw the Eagles at my college, Billy Joel opened for them. After Joe joined they took it to another level.
Love it!! This song is sooo old! I know cuz I was Young when it came out- long before there was a band called The Eagles! This was in Heavy rotation at our parties. Loved your head banging reaction 🤘💯
Freshman year in HS 1974 I went to a new friends house. Her older brother had a Joe Walsh LP titled The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get. Absolutely blew my mind. Have been a huge fan of Joe Walsh ever since. Great reaction gentlemen 👏
The story I heard was that there was a forth member of James Gang who was the lead singer and lead guitarist and he suddenly quit which forced Joe Walsh to learn to play a combination of lead and rhythm guitar, AND sing lead on most of their songs… not to mention do most of the writing… I saw him live once in the 80s with just a drummer and bass… he’s super talented and cool….
They were formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1966. There were just 3 ,, embers. They made these albums:: James Gang · 1966-1977 · 1991 · 1996 · 1998 · 2001 · 2005 · 2006 · 2022.
I just saw Joe Walsh and the James Gang in November! They are from ohio. It was Joe Walsh and the James Gang. The Black Keys , Nine Inch Nails, and The Breeders. All those bands are from Ohio. It was Ohio Fest, lol. It was a truly amazing night of live music! It is a three piece band, by the way.
I remember getting the album, and printed on the inside of the album jacket it said "Made loud, to be played loud", and I remember following these instructions explicitly!
3 man band. Story goes the lead singer and rhythm guitar player quit just before they were supposed to go on stage. Joe Walsh took over their duties and they went on anyways and a legend was born.
The James Gang was a 3 piece band from Cleveland. As others have mentioned, it was our introduction to Joe Walsh. Give a listen to The Ashes The Rain & I.
good pick up on the Footloose reference. I used to play this song on guitar back in the 70's and when Footloose came out I asked the same thing. The fingering is almost the same. Joe was always a little ahead of things.
