It's the 2017 NBA Playoffs. Rockets vs. Spurs in the final seconds of overtime of an extremely important Game 5. Needing a bucket, Houston's James Harden stares down the defending Manu Ginobili.
This is a pretty cool matchup. The teams are neighbors trying to reignite a rivalry that's gone kinda dormant. And the players have more in common than you may remember, but some key distinctions that brought them to this point. Before we watch how James vs. Manu plays out, let's rewind!

This is one of my absolute favorite moments as a spurs fan. I cannot describe the love that San Antonio has for Manu but when this happened it didn’t come as a surprise to any spurs fan. Although Manu was almost always the oldest guy on the court his final seasons you wouldn’t see anyone with as much heart and fire that he played with. Miss you Manu!!

As a first option? if you have 2 exact teams but one is lead by Harden and one by Manu, the Manu one wouldn't make playoffs and Harden's probably a 4th seed. Manu is a great player but he isn't a first option or an engine to a team

I've been a Spurs fan since 2006, but it took me 15 years to understand that even though Duncan was the best player and Parker was the flashiest on the team, Ginobili was our soul. You can't have ego in a team where an Olympic gold winner came off the bench to win multiple championships. He created a culture that he passed onto Patty, which hopefully he could pass onto our young core before his departure.

Except now, the Spurs have a culture and a system left over from that time which has done its fair share of adapting over the years . Now the Spurs have Dejounte Murray, who has proven to be a special talent, the Spurs future success hangs on their ability to bring or develop another Star to play with him .

If you don’t live in San Antonio you wouldn’t understand how much the Spurs means to the city. People live and breath the Spurs. Watching the Spurs glory years growing up was a great and a big lesson to me about loyalty. Like you said Manu could’ve gone anywhere else and probably had a starting role but he stayed where he sowed his roots and for that reason he will always be a legend for the city. Also I wince got the chance to be a camp counselor for Manu’s kids at a sports camp one summer and got to have multiple conversations with him and his wife. Down to earth people. Love you Manu

If you think about it, this play really shook Houston’s confidence moving forward. If harden makes this shot, then Houston may have won the series, and then they probably would’ve stayed put because they would’ve made a deeper playoff run, which means they might not have ever gotten CP3

We probably would have lost to the warriors in the next round anyways so I think a major move like the CP3 trade was bound to happen whether we beat the spurs or not.

HIGHLY unlikely that they simply stay out after beating the Spurs. Cause the Warriors would have curb stomped them in the next round which would lead to the CP3 deal anyway

@@enthusiastofcute exactly. Anybody who was following the Harden-Morey era rockets knew they were always in championship or bust mode, so if they didn’t beat the warriors in 2017, there was no way they were going to sit back and not try to make a huge addition to the team.

This was a great episode. Really shows the options you can choose. You can seek individual glory and become known for putting up insane statistics and win MVP, or you can make a sacrifice by taking a backseat to a better player and win several championships.

the juxtaposition between the careers Harden and Manu really added some nice elements of comparison that this episode was able to capture nicely. Although this moment didnt stick out like more notable moments in sports history, this was a really nice story.

It's not like he seated for a better player, it's just that it was better for the team to play him from the bench. This is corroborated by the fact people will always name Tim, Parker and Manu as the Spurs big 3. He could've been a starter and star in any team, the two seasons he played as a starter he made the All NBA team, but he chose to win with SA. Manu is amazing.

I mean harden didn’t seek individual glory he wanted to stay in OKC and they didn’t pay him so he went to a team that wanted him and they decided to make him the main option.

It wasn't because harden wanted to leave okc , it was because ownership was too cheap. OKC was the opposite of the warriors, they were cheap. While Golden State gave Draymond Green, Klay, Steph and KD max contracts; OKC on the other hand only paid KD, Westbrook the max and convince Ibaka to take a paycut and tried to get harden to take a paycut.

I remember freaking out seeing that possession. I'm a spurs fan and my heart sunk when I saw harden pull up because I knew he could make it. But I was so happy seeing the denial. One of my favorite moments.

The interesting takeaway from this video is that Daryl Morey is probably one of the most patient and calculated GMs in NBA history. We were questioning for so long why they wouldn't just move Ben Simmons earlier since it was clear from the beginning of the season he wouldn't play but damn, he's got some really good luck and hella patience to be able to pull James Harden twice in 10 years

@@OfficialJPryde Harden is my favourite player but I have to admit that trade is on Harden. I know hindsight is 20/20 if he could have just been patient with CP3 and at least put aside their differences then there's no way in hell Morey would bring in a complete non-shooter who required other big pieces to be moved to accommodate his play style. But I guess Harden saw his window of opportunity to win a title closing, plus seeing the Lakers get AD and the Clippers get PG and Kawhi made him panic. It hurts more knowing Russ ended up losing us game 2 of the Lakers series and the season was a wrap from there, whereas a resurgent CP3 would have helped us take a 2-0 lead and at the very worst pushed the series to 7.

Manu is literally one of the greatest guards of all time to never get any credit. Although he wasn’t flashy with it and his stats don’t reflect it like crazy that’s because of where he was but he could’ve easily been a second option and a starter for any other contender and could carry a team as the leader in his prime to at least a playoff berth. He was the complete package on both ends don’t @ me he’s special

We had no chance in 2017 with arguably the greatest team of all time,would've been a Gentlemen's sweep. 2018 was the greatest heartbreak in Rockets history. They were 3 quarters away from winning it all in 2018 wcf game 6 and 7 but CP3 got hurt at the worst moment possible. After that the championship window closed for good.

As a longtime Spurs fan, I most certainly was dying for a chance for my Spurs to avenge that 1995 playoff loss. That 95 loss in particular hurt, because that was San Antonio's first real shot at a title (at least in my lifetime). Oh well, at least the Spurs won 5 titles by the time they next met the Rockets in the playoffs.

That was also the first time we beat the Rockets in a playoff series. And doing that in Houston, in dominant fashion, made it even sweeter. It was the last great night of the Spurs Dynasty, and it was good.

Blame it to Dennis Rodman. He pulled off his uncontained theatrics and antics at the wrong time. It's a blessing in disguise anyway. Two years later, Tim Duncan arrived. Thanks also for Timmy for deciding to stay in college so to fulfill his promise to his mother to finish college. Otherwise, he could be played in Golden State (projected to be top pick in 1995) or Philly (1996).

Manu is my favorite player of all time. I almost wish he left the Spurs to see him play with no limits. I am a Spurs fan so I am also grateful he didn’t. His energy was almost unmatched. Even in his last few years being one of the oldest players in the league he still had many clutch moments, this block being one of them.

Spurs fan for life here, I respected the spurs more as a team of players the an organization. A lot changed when all of the vets retired but man, I love my guy Manu! Such a selfless basketball player. Always gave his full effort and was just a great teammate patiently waiting for his number to be called so he could help his team in any way he was asked! The culture and the brotherhood meant so much more to him then the money or the recognition! What a rare talent he was!

As an Argentinian (Which was too young to watch Manu winning the gold medal live) this moment embodies what he is, aggressive but respectful, a guy who has a clean sheet in every aspect, in and outside the court. I support the Hawks but as every Argentinian which likes basketball Manu's playoffs were unmissable, he has made and will continue to make our nation proud.

2018-19 Game 6 Western Conference 2nd Round. Take advantage of Steph having 0 points in the 1st half and build a larger lead to cushion his explosion in the 2nd half and maybe you don’t lose that series

I love the idea of Rockets, Thunder, and Grizzlies fans from that era all at a bar drinking our ring "What Ifs?" away. The Spurs, Lakers, and Warriors were just too good!

I was at that game! It was an absolute madhouse when Ginobili made that block. It was also my first playoff game where I witnessed the spurs win. Definitely one of the best moments that I was able to share with my dad. Glad you guys did a video on it!

This video give chills to me , to same players with same styles take diferences rolls , one consider greatest scorer and the other greatest six man ever , manu ginobili was a beast , his impact in winning and is selfinnes make him one of the greatest winners in spots ,4 time champion (deserved 2005 finals mvp ,so he was a fundumental key for spurs success and no another role player) , and greatest winning % in nba history ( 72% of his games has won , over more of 1000 games play).For me he deserved be in the top 75 nba (and he have and argument if he his the greatest six man ever), winning is more important that stats , and manu is a winner.

I’m from San Antonio area so I’m biased to the Spurs but Manu is my all time favorite player because of his trickyness and heart. Dude gave it his all every game and wasn’t afraid to try crazy stuff.

Thank you, as a Spurs fan. I feel that this play was already forgotten. To be honest, I haven't seen a lot of NBA since the Spurs won in 2014 but I saw this game. It was like 10 years ago again. And we, the fans, couldn't thank Manu enough.

Love the content every time. The work put in, and quality of production, constantly is top shelf. A great rewind would be the last game Patrick Roy played for Montreal. Mario Trembley and him had issues from his rookie year that lead to him leaving. Again, folks awesome work, and please keep it coming. Lol you made a Mariners fan out of me with your Mariners history. They have the Expo energy, but in the AL... and without Jeff Loria messing it up.

Hard to believe that it's already been almost 5 years since this epic series. I always knew about Manu growing up but I never really knew about his situation or his style of play until I started watching NBA games during the 2014-2015 season. I did always find it weird to hear that he was a very flashy guard that would easily score on a fast break considering it clashed with what I knew Spurs basketball to be: slow, grit and grind basketball. After watching this video, I can understand why they moved him to the bench. He could play his brand of basketball and change the pace of play and catch the 2nd unit off-guard. I'm glad I was able to watch and appreciate Manu for what he was before he retired.

That years Spurs team was so fun to watch. You had the older dudes like Manu, Parker, Pau, even Aldridge. Plus a super exciting bench with DJ Murray, Bertans, Simmons, Dedmon. Its a shame Kawhi got injured and we couldnt get a whole series against the Warriors and maybe a Finals appearance. Not to mention everything that happened that next season.
