The bizarro game 7 ending of the Rockets-Thunder bubble series needs a deep rewind

Clutch players blowing it, non-shooters with hot hands, lazy defenders hustling-- this game felt like it was in an alternate universe. Probably also felt that way because it happened inside the NBA bubble which was an alternate universe.
The deciding play happened with Houston up one point and just about 5 seconds left. Lu Dort, not usually the world’s best shooter was squaring up. James Harden, not usually the world’s most enthusiastic defender, was sprinting at him. I don't want to say what happens cuz that'll spoil the video. So instead, I'll just say: Let's rewind.

The bubble literally was not the NBA. No traveling. No distractions from the outside world. No hostile environments for road games. It was basically a tournament at a gym. But they had 3 and D guys hurt and with Paul out, they were literally playing about 5 and a half guys. Their crazy swarming defense gassed them by the second half. They shortarmed all their shots. Speaking of bubble game 7's, I think a Rewind on the final seconds of Nuggets-Jazz game 7 in 2020 would be fascinating. Utah's Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert were both drafted by Denver, but were quickly traded away only to become the two best players in the Nuggets' playoff rival. To replace them, Denver developed Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic, who ended up being perfect rivals to their counterparts. Murray and Mitchell traded 50-point performances in the series, while DPOY Gobert challenged future MVP Jokic's often-unstoppable offense. Other key players were Torrey Craig and Gary Harris, the Nugget's defense-first duo, the latter of which was essential in winning game 6 after returning from injury, as well as Mike Conley, Utah's best three-point shooter. The Jazz went up 3 games to 1 in the series, which up until that point had only been overcome 11 times in NBA history. But the Nuggets clawed back, forcing a low-scoring game 7 that the Nuggets took early control of before letting the Jazz pull even. With 17.4 seconds left on the clock, the score was 78-80 in favor of Denver, with Utah preparing to inbound the ball. Harris played fantastic defense and Murray stole the ball for a fast break the other way in what should have been a free game-winning layup, but Craig missed it. Gobert grabbed the rebound, possibly stepped out of bounds (although the ref didn't see it and neither did anyone else at the time), floated it up to Conley, who fired an attempt at a game-winning 3, and the ball rimmed in and out. My personal favorite NBA playoff moment of all time. Just unbridled chaos.

I'm so glad you bring up this stat at 12:54. You have two guys who have been derided as not showing up during the playoffs, and boy did they show that they deserved every bit of that rep. Chris Paul's been on the losing side of 2 of the biggest blowouts in playoff history (Including the worst blowout loss) and here in Game 7, he put on an absolute balls-in display. Harden offered up the same, and in the last 3:22 of the ball game, Houston and OKC combined for *2* made FGs, and 5 TOs. It was a shambolic display that left me pretty confident that neither Harden nor Paul were ever going to win a ring unless they got carried to one.

@BloodyJasonMask Tell me you don't know anything about basketball without telling me you don't know anything about basketball. You're trying to say that Dort was going to drain a 3 when this dude was so panicked in crunch time that he records: 0 points, 0 boards, 0 assists, 0 blocks, 0 steals, 0 fouls, 0 turnovers, and 0 shots from the moment he enters the game at 2:47 until when he misses that shot? You're gonna tell me he was going to hit from 27 feet, when he couldn't hit James Harden with the basketball right next to him? Or remember to call time out? Dude was panicking just like every other un-clutch player on that court that night. Chris Paul's a choker. Harden's a choker. Harden just choked less that night. Houston didn't win, OKC threw. This Game 7 was the least skillful game decided by 1 possession that I've ever seen. Danilo Gallinari missed a FT off a dead-ball foul and OKC didn't even successfully inbound the ball to get a last shot in the last 2 seconds. It was embarrassing.

@BloodyJasonMask Un-clutch teams struggle at the end of games all the time. I have never seen a Game 7 where both teams played as ineptly as this with the game on the line. In the last 3 and a half minutes: 2 combined baskets, 5 total points, 5 turnovers, 12 combined missed shots, 5 of which are missed lay-ups that are not blocked. This wasn't "struggling", this was like 2 teams just forgot how to play basketball because their collective sphincters got tight.

Damn I remember tearing up a little only because we got such false hope even when we didn’t want it

Me and my friends talk about this game a lot and what's craziest to me is that Harden does not have a single offensive super clutch moment in the playoffs that we can think of. And yet, James Harden, one of the worst defenders of the modern era had a series winning block in the playoffs. Unreal
@therealallpro
@therealallpro Год назад
Harden isn’t a bad defender. He is a slow defender who often lacks effort but he has amazing hands and is ridiculously strong. He just won a game the other night with 3 def plays in the last min.

Wow. This is actually the first time Secret Base make a video content from the 2020 NBA restart in the Orlando bubble. Fun Factoid: 2020 is the last time we saw both the Thunder and the Rockets in the Playoffs as of the moment of posting this comment.

The bubble was honestly elite. Maybe it's just because we were so starved for sports at the time but the games felt so much more intense and competitive than the past few years' playoffs

Chris Paul's 2020 season puts him at GOAT status, first ballot HOFer, and maybe even top 5 PG in the league for me. I'm trying to imagine any other superstar-level player who would have accomplished what he did that year and not boohoo his way out for a trade.

I consider this one of the closest games of all time. It felt disappointing that a more veteran led team in the rockets were closely matched by a primarily young Thunder team.
