Hetfield will always be my "Guitar Hero". As cliche and as corny as it is to say, his lyrics and riffs gave me the voice I never had growing up. Unforgiven 1&3, Fade to black, harvester of sorrow, and Mama said have all gotten me through some very difficult times in my life.

The fact is , no man who could leave his kids behind that way is normal. I was an accidental child , no question. My parents were in their 40s when I was born. But they gave me all the love , attention and certainly all the necessary things a kid needs ( plus lots of things I just wanted) . They were probably tired and would have liked to spend those years traveling or just making themselves happy but they focused on me . I am so thankful for that. I have written off former friends because of the way they treated their kids. It was none of my business, but it showed me the true measure of the person. If you can't put your kids first, you suck as a human

Seems James was ripped off of his childhood and teens. Everything started to go away. Learn what he wanted to learn..taken..his father..gone.. his mother..taken... I heard from James he was pretty shy as a kid and playing guitar became the only way he could express himself. I played guitar from 10 to 28 and it's been a gift that kept on giving. It's something beautiful you can go back to and it never gets old. There is never a point where the learning stops. Personally I was dedicated but nowhere near dedicated enough in my opinion. There are a few things I would've done differently if I re-did everything but music never came as naturally to me as words.

@@stonecodfish2365 Haha, I get ya. If it weren't for two-note power chords Metallica wouldn't exist. I've always loved bands that use weird chords and all that. I probably should've gone out of my way to write songs with those kinds of chords and get comfortable with them because I've always admired songs with weird chords. I think actually The Beatles did that. John and Paul would run around finding people who knew weird chords, teach each them to each other, and then make a point of going home and writing songs with them built in.

Well, obviously you can't be a mama's boy in his position. We all gotta grow up anyway, regardless of family situations. Some however have to grow up much faster, much harder. It might make you stronger, much because you have to be, but it also might kill you. If anything, what helped him persevere his father's abandonment and his mother's death is that he at least had a mother, a family (before and after Metallica), as opposed to, let's say, getting dropped off at an abusive foster home right at birth. Hardships happen to everybody, some worse than others. What really helps us persevere is resources, something to lean on, preferably not intoxicants or any other addictions. That said, obviously we don't need spoiled brats like in Sweet 16, Trump, Tekashi 6-9 and the Uvalde shooter. James obviously turned out better than those people, even in his young days and as an addict later on in life. Suffering might build character, but really it's autenticity that does it, with or without suffering. The Uvalde shooter clearly didn't have much character, so that made his suffering useless. I can only hope the suffering of the victim's families doesn't become useless, after such a useless atrocity. Metallica surely became something useful, something of autenticity and character, a suffering worthwhile.

@Halloween All Year Round I ain't so sure his parents were deeply abusive. Did they have faults? Yes, but I dare say all parents have them. Deeply abusive parents? You must not've heard of Dave Pelzer. He didn’t become a rockstar but should've been something like Cannibal Corpse, or a mass shooter.

Dude… who knew that one of the most successful metal band members would have such a terrible childhood? I always like their music, I’m trying to listen to more of Metallica, but this really makes me think more of the band’s history. It’s actually pretty motivating, when you think about it. James went through a horrible childhood, but was able to eventually do what he loved and have the most incredible fan base. I’m very happy now he had an incredible life right ahead of him in a secret way.

It’s super funny how James attended Downey High, which I recently found out aboutabout a year ago. I I attended Bell High School, which are neighbor schools. We were both in high school in the same years. Another thing that happened was that before Slayer made it, they were also neighbors to were I lived (Bell, Ca.) and I remember when Slayer came to our school (Bell High) and played cover songs, as well as their originals in our basketball gym. I paid .25 cents to enter the gym a watch them play. We were all so young and full of dreams! But then, really hit! Well, just a short story about my past. Be good people! 🤪

I can kind-of relate to that, my dad owned a mechanical repair business, in 2000 he had to retire because of nerve damage in his left arm, I worked in my dad's workshop with my two brothers to keep the business going till it got sold, then my dad returns to his native country and takes all the money with him, including money he owes my mum as part of a divorce settlement, I found out that my dad is an alcoholic control-freak, my stepdad was also an alcoholic too, I used to get picked-on a lot at school because I had to wear glasses, I was actually born short-sighted, cross-eyed, and red-green colourblind, i eventually got into music because it was the one thing that truly made me feel good inside.

When he reflects on his father leaving when he was 13 and states you never taught me how to be a man made me cry. I also lost my father suddenly when I was 16 and have always bottled up that anger inside of me. Dave Mustaine also shares this with his father abandoning them. I can't imagine the pain of that. When a parent dies you simply accept it and move on but someone walking out is a living rejection. I'm glad he reconciled with his father before he died but losing his mum at 16 as a consequence was a bigger hurt. These scars fueled some of their best songs.

It's amazing how music can vent and convey our suffering and how we can inadvertently pass it on to those who need it. Hetfield's angry lyrics (especially Dyer's Eve) were my affirmation that my hatred and suffering under my parents was not an isolated, subjective thing. James was my biggest idol when I was 16. Not only did he teach me how to play the greatest riffs, but he taught me that, as a musician, it was my duty to carry on living no matter how insufferable my life was, so that I could one day hopefully do for others what he did for me.

The pain James was left from his fathers absence was the fuel he most likely used to help him be who he is today. On a level I can relate about my relationship with my father. When I was 10 I started to see my dad for who he is. This built so much resentment and betrayal. Even though he was around I just couldn’t look up to him anymore. I had to learn to grow on my own because of it. Nearly 3 decades later I’ve started to heal and accept what happened. I’ve been a fan of Metallica since I was 15 and it wasn’t till recent years I started to understand James lyrics. For him to overcome and survive all these years is amazing to me. I admire James so much as a human being. So much power he holds.

When newsted announced he was starting a side project, hetfield let his trauma of abandonment rise, that’s why he ordered him to quit and be 100% focused on Metallica. He was not worried about Jason’s commitment to the band, he just didn’t want to be abandoned again by a loved one. In his own words: “that was my way to say ‘don’t leave us, you have to stay’”

At least he got his father's name and knew who he was. I never met my dad. My grandparents raised me. Thank God for grandma. I asked her about my father. She said that I hadn't missed anything. I took her word for it. She never once lied to me. But I had similar feelings to James. I remember grandma saying, "Spite don't hurt anyone but self." She raised me way better than I turned out. She died in 1995. In 2004, my mother, great aunt and cousin, all died. My grandmother had taken me to church as a child but by age 16 I had rebelled. I was a hard heart. I was wicked past anything my father ever dreamed of. But God let me be in the room when my great aunt passed. I know what I witnessed. She was looking into glory as she left here. I was as lost as a man can get and knew what I was seeing as it happened. Later that same year, God saved me. A wretched old sinner. Not because I deserved it. Quite the contrary. But by His Grace, I was confronted with my sin and convicted by His Word and the Holy Spirit that I was headed straight for hell. The weight of my sin and the lives I had ruined was unbearable and made me sick to my stomach. I got on my face and begged God to forgive me. To change me. To help me love someone other than myself. He did it. I had to move out of my house that I had shacked up in for 9 years. We were married on the last day of 2004. He took me away from the bars where I had played Metallica songs for years and made me music director at our church for 9 years. He gave me the strength to take care of my precious wife the last two years of her life. And right now, He is sustaining and comforting me in the knowledge that soon, I'm gonna see Him face to face. That I'm gonna rejoice and praise Him forever with my wife and grandma and loved ones that are waiting for me there. What a day that will be!!! Jesus is Lord! Choose you this day Whom you will serve.

Again his home life. And quickly he's subdued Through constant pain disgrace The young boy learns their rules With time the child draws in This whipping boy done wrong Deprived of all his thoughts The young man struggles on Sad but true. - I'm your life now, I'm the one who cares (addiction .... )

Well i can relate to James because my sister died in cancer, never forget that despite i was 6 then.... Later from that even tho my parents separated they became kind of friends after 7 years of BS and them being too proud to say anything, now when I'm older close to 30 I've had some talks about the whole even thing you know, and they low key blame each other for my sister's death because not only did she need the medicine but she was allergic to it as well so you can see why things went as they did.. but at the same time i think it's a shame the events went as they did, i mean i really can't pick a side since it's like killing yourself OR dying because of the Things you do become happy.

James, Dave and Kirk's childhoods were so relatable, at least to me. It's funny how that happens - maybe there's just something deep-rooted in their music that comes from those experiences, like it shaped their sound. The 3 of them grew up low-mid class lives, with feelings of alienation and resentment. The reverberations of that sit deep within and it essentially creates who you become. I resented organized religion, authority, conformity, mainstream-thinking etc., and it made me bitter in my youth, but ultimately made me look deeper than the surface of things, introverted, and a free-thinker. Put me in any box and I have to break down the walls.

I remember when I first started playing Metal Rock Bands "Metallica" was one that I played all the time like "Riding the Lightning" or Whom Toll The Bells but that was like 30-Years ago, but now like the latest they make the band sounds like "Softies" and they know from one Musician to another they know what I'm saying from the Old Days when they started,.....

Most people don’t realize those pains made him the man he is and that man was the lead singer of Metallica where he unloaded that pain and abandonment. In other words he may have never been the front man had his family stayed together. Let’s face it they were in a cult he would have been miserable. The outcome of his family was probably the preferred outcome of his childhood had you layer out the pathways side by side! Because without those pains he would never have become who he is.

Glad he got his shit together with quitting drugs and alcohol abuse but he needs to realize Jesus didn’t forbid him or his mom from getting medical attention, he provides for it in the scriptures. But Metallica went from Great metal to shit. I’ll die a Metallica fan but damn Load was the end of it, Reload signaled that Metal was dying, and couldn’t be saved. RIP Metallica
