They do it to give the government a chance. The first chance was the demand for more pay. The next chance was the threat of strike action. Then the fragmented strikes begin as we have now. Health Secretary Steve Barclay walked around a Hospital yesterday, ended up speaking face-to-face with a woman next to her child in a bed waiting for an operation that has been cancelled several times whilst nodding his head agreeing with the woman as she summarised what has been happening in the NHS with the staff being overworked, lack of resources, lack of social care making elderly people having to go to hospitals, amount of patients etc. and making it clear that it was happeneing BEFORE the pandemic that these 'politicians' are blaming it on and she did it within approx 90 seconds. I am an American, so I am probably ignorant of most of the happenings of the NHS. I have followed what is going on lately, and from personal experience, DO NOT go to privatized/for profit healthcare! I work as a provider in healthcare here and it is absolutely abominable the financial wrecking that the patients I see go through. Even personal experience; my daughter had an EKG with Echocardiogram for precautionary purpose and it ended up costing $1800. My insurance paid $900 and I paid the rest because of the deductible. That is outrageous.
@JcdLowe
@JcdLowe Год назад
There are undoubtedly many people over here who A) have no idea how ludicrously expensive healthcare plans/costs are in the States & B) are unaware that the NHS has already privatised some things. Healthcare came up in conversation a few years ago at a family gathering and my uncle (70s; read The Daily Mail his entire life, sadly) took exception when I said that the Tories clearly wanted to increasingly move towards privatisation... It couldn't be more obvious.
@zippymufo9765
@zippymufo9765 Год назад
No, the ideal system would use a heavily regulated privatized system in junction with government coverage, which is in fact what many single-payer countries have. Making hospital staff de facto government employees has led to wage suppression----British nurses earn half of what US nurses make. The US could fix most of it's problems by expanding Medicare to cover anyone who wants it.
@pansepot1490
@pansepot1490 Год назад
Wow $1800! In Italy that would cost €120 in a private clinic. We have a pretty decent public healthcare system but sometimes for not urgent things the waiting list can get long. So there’s the private option, which, having to compete with the free public healthcare, is very reasonably priced.
@kellen4866
@kellen4866 Год назад
@@zippymufo9765 I agree with that. Here in the States, congress just barely passed legislation that would give medicare power to negotiate pricing with pharmaceutical companies, but that is pretty much the extent of what the US government does to regulate cost of healthcare.

I want this shouted from the rooftops - in any sane society, a nurse won't take a pay cut until every politician, every single person being paid more than them has had their pay cut to the nurse's level. The staff who directly keep people alive aren't front-line workers, they're last-line workers: they're literally the thing that stands between society and oblivion. Perhaps only with the exception of farmers, who are also in the "keeping people alive" business, every single person in all of society should suffer pay cuts and tax rises before a nurse has to lose a single penny.

lets not forget the tories have not had a national debt surplus since like 1989. Labour did it in 2001/2002 before we went to war in the middle east and ruined that boom. The national debt is currently 2,436.7 billion or 2.4 trillion. We also have 120billion in student loan debt and around 800 billion in pension debt. This means the tory party since 2010 have averaged 17billion pounds of debt every month since 2010. They also gave themselves 3 pay rises in 12 years. This is why they do not have the money to pay nurses what they deserve. a 17billion pound monthly deficit since 2010 they blame the labour party for.

Well French spend 22% more, Germany 38% and the USA 400% more on healthcare per person than we do. It's bizarre that we should go to a different model because "it costs too much" when the alternative systems we are proposing all cost significantly more. They cost so much more because the NHS has massive economies of scale and in the USA you pay for the profit and advertising budgets.

We hear today that the number of people who die in Ambulances has doubled in the last year 21/22! The problems we have today didn't start with nurses wanting a reasonable pay rise, It started in 2010 when the tories came to power!!!!! They belong in Jail!!!!
