I recently asked a pro gun constitutional sort if, hypothetically, restricting guns totally eliminated children being murdered, would he support it. His answer was an emphatic and immediate no. James, you will never be able to understand the relationship of many Americans with their guns, because even sane Americans can't fathom it. I was raised in the country we and had my hunting phase in my teens, until I actually killed a deer when I was 16. As I watched the beautiful animal bleed out, the gravity and horror of what I had done overcame me, and I sold my gun the next day. All I can think of, is that guns give fearful people a feeling of power and agency that is lacking in their lives. But at what cost.

Rachel Meadow done a great story and believe me there's way more stories like this than you'd think. The whole Rep party accepts gun lobby money so nothing will be done. The only way he would support gun control would be if his own family were slaughtered in this way. I live in Texas. In the oil patch in the west side, no less. They are already numb to it here, James. "Which shooting was that?" is a common question when the topic is brought up - often followed by "Oh I didn't hear about that one. When was it?" Which is then often followed by "Well they're hard to keep track of, there's so many. Sad. Oh well." Though, more often it's as simple of a conversation as "Did you hear about the shooting?" "Another one?" And it ends there.

One of the most common questions that a US gun toting citizen asks before visiting the UK is "can I bring my gun?" When they find out they can't, the next question is "How do I protect myself if someone points a gun at me?" Just as we cannot understand their 'fetish' for guns. They cannot understand that it is possible to live and walk around the UK free from the fear of being attacked by someone wielding a gun. They are totally astonished when they discover our Police do not habitually carry guns (except for those on special duties) or pull a gun out on citizens even when making an arrest! American here. Big fan of LBC (and particularly James fan)- I watch these due to a lot of our politics overlapping. I am so happy that your country took action after the Dunblane shooting. I wish I could even understand the half of our country who are willing to watch this happen and accept that is part of society. A few years ago I saw a poll taken of a majority of Republicans who said mass shootings are something they believe is part of a free society, and they aren’t willing to give up their guns to prevent it. If it was easier to move to another country, I would have already left the US. To answer James’ question, how do we deal with all of these mass shootings, I believe we are just numb to it, at this point. Personally, every time I go out (even to the grocery store), part of me has it in my mind that a mass shooting could take place. It’s frightening. The only way, in my mind, to fix it is taking money out of politics. The NRA is in so many politicians pockets that nothing will change until they can’t sway our governance. As of yesterday (27 March), there have been 129 mass shootings in the US in 2023. That’s more than one a day…

I live in north GA about 2 hours from Nashville. The only explanation is insanity, cultural insanity. I’ve grown up and grown older watching more and more people surrender to this paranoia. It’s a combination of some historical tendencies having to do with guns combined with modern conservative ideology (which sees everything “slipping away” from them) combined with apocalyptic religious views, all of it bundled neatly and monetized by various corporations who sell, provoke, and agitate fear-mongering for profit (not just gun manufacturers but news media, home security, movies and TV, etc)

Dear James, I am a Canadian and I happen to be a black man. I love your show, and what you stand for by the way. I’ve been on some of these RU-vid channels which are discussing the Nashville tragedy. And I will tell you these people just don’t get it. They have every excuse as to why these mass killings occur except for the common denominator. And that denominator is the unfettered access to firearms. My take and my research has led me to believe that a lot people in the United States are in fear of people who are different. So they need to ”flex” with their firearms to show people who are different what they’ll get. There are loads and loads of people in the United States that believe this narrative is OK. If you look at the legislation behind this unfettered access to firearms, it is based in hate. Despite the fact that people that are different from the establishment in the US are completely harmless, the Americans have still created rights and legislation to oppress people that are different. Therefore, this legislation is based in hate. So I would argue when a society creates legislation that is based in hate the innocent always suffers. Thus the Nashville tragedy in United States is the latest installment of the innocent paying the price for hate-based rights and legislation. I guess I’m just extremely grateful being a person of colour to lives in Canada not the United States. It is just really sad James. Thank you for being on point. Sincerely, Sean
@ArcaneWolf9
@ArcaneWolf9 Год назад
Up front, I am similarly not American btw. I think you are right, and would also like to offer a refinement from my point of view. You said they are in fear of people who are different. I agree. But I also want to refine this point slightly. I would add to your statement, they believe that the country BELONGS to THEM. They do not like seeing anyone who doesn't conform to being ONE OF THEM, and fear that anyone that isn't one of them might just be planning to steal "their" country, just like they did. I read some research about how different groups in North America view the idea of 'Freedom'. Most were very similar, there was a lot of overlap, such as freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom of protest, personal autonomy, etc. Almost everyone agreed on these. Then there was also a split. Some groups identified the freedom to organize, organize their communities, health care, etc as 'Freedom' as carried out through representative government. Essentially, if the majority of people in a community want things in our community done, then the representative we elect on that platform should be carrying that out. It may not get passed, but they should be working to that goal. Now the OTHER half of that split. A group of conservative Americans IGNORED that option in their responses (even when given an option to check it). But they stated that one of the forms of freedom was the ability to control, or take away, rights and freedoms from others. This was so bizarre to the people who were doing the study that had to follow up by visiting some of the communities where these responses came from. In talking to them, they found a VERY strong oral tradition of the idea that America was NOT free until white settlers arrived. REMOVING the native people WHO ALREADY LIVED THERE was seen as an act of 'Freedom', and when they asked for details, they were told, "America is a Christian country, promised to us by Jesus. Those people didn't belong here, so we got rid of them." With guns. And they still equate guns with 'Freedom', but what freedom is it?

First of all, as an American from L.A, I agree that our gun laws need to change. But most Americans don't live in fear of people who are different. The United States is one of the most diverse countries in the world, if not the most diverse. The fastest growing demographic of gun owners are POC and women. But wow. What a hot mess of typical Canadian smug moral superiority and condescension. The vast majority of Americans (approx. 70%) are not even gun owners anymore. The legislation you speak of at a state level has nothing to do with hate. It is based on their history, rural culture, rugged individualism, and the extreme reverence of our Constitution.

I suppose if they'd had a Christmas photo taken with a couple of fierce-looking guard dogs, it would be the same to them. These things keep us safe and we love them for that. The difference is there's no danger of dog ownership rights being restricted, so a politician makes his Christmas card into a political statement about the Second Amendment.

Owning one isn't inherently bad. A lot of Swiss citizens own guns, including service rifles for territorial defence. The problem is the gun culture and lax, flippant attitude towards guns in America.
@harouchr

It makes sense in America because if you are unfortunate enough to be a victim of a violent crime the criminals will also likely be armed. Guns are relatively easy to obtain in most parts of America, for better or worse they're everywhere! Because of that it makes sense to own one. And if you're going to own one you might as well own an effective one: an AR15 🤷‍♂️ You might see it as a sad reality but it makes sense over there

The central theme of Christmas being "Peace on Earth Goodwill to all Men" jars a bit when you're confronted with a smiling happy family carrying killing machines. On what planet do those two polar opposites belong in the same image. Lauren Boebert did the same thing, in fact many Republican members of congress have done this over the years, but I'm still not getting the connection.

A semi-automatic auto-loads the chamber but fires only once for each pull of the trigger. An automatic fires repeatedly as long as it's depressed. That's why there was all the noise about bump-stocks a few years ago, as they use the recoil of the weapon to simulate full automatic fire.
