When I think of genuine superstars of Australian rugby, I think James O’Connor. He is the youngest ever player to play Super Rugby at just 17years old. He burst on to the rugby scene with his boy band looks and his incredible talent. At 18 he was playing international rugby for Australia and with that came high expectations of him as a role model, a role he wasn’t ready for.
I loved this episode so much because you can hear in raw honesty what these young professional athletes go through when bursting onto the scene. James has had some incredible highs through his rugby but also some incredibly dark times, none darker than spending a couple of nights in prison in France.
The cool part of this chat is hearing where James is at now, he’s loving his rugby more than ever, he’s has a really balanced life and is now content with the little things in his life.
This is one of the most inspiring episode of What a Lad and as you’ll hear James is an absolute lad who has so much knowledge which he shares in this!

As a passionate All blacks fan I hates James growing up but now I look at him as a legend. Learned a lot of interesting things I had no idea about in this pod 🤙🏽

Been looking forward to this one and it did not disappoint!! What a journey JOC went through. I recall seeing him chucking a ball with Quade Cooper at the old Reading cinemas in Courtenay place during the 2011 RWC as a wide eyed kid. The life and rugby journey he embarked on has certainly been a roller coaster! Imagine if he had chosen to pursue his career under the NZ or SA system. He was one hell of a talent and could have been a real GOAT at first five or fullback - a bit like DC or Fran's Steyn. Glad to hear he seems to be on the right track now!

Prime O'connor was a versatile, world class player. 10,12,13,14,15, he excelled anywhere you put him Ball skills, fantastic footwork, goal kicking, sturdy defence, great defence under the high ball and an eye for counter attacking. Lost his competitive edge after heading off to europe and never regained the magic, but still a handy player.

Nice guy, seems to have a lot of good energy, been there, got the t-shirt. Dad a Minister, Mum a Sunday school teacher, we can all go sideways for a spell, but our upbringing comes through in the end. Love all your great interviews, the "Graham Norton" of podcasts 😊

I remember watching the Italy v Australia match in November 2008 on French TV, and around the 65-minute mark when James made his debut the commentator said something like, "The Australians have brought a schoolboy on at full-back!" I watched him from time to time on TV after that but had no idea of the problems that came later. However I always thought he was badly treated by the Australia media - one or two journalists in particular - when things got tough at Melbourne, so it's good to see him in a good place now. Great interview.

22 years old for him to learn how to put washing on. Um. Ok. His parents spoiled this innocent young man. That party life is showing in those crows feet. 33 years old and he’s looking 45. He was an absolute legend in the game. Young protege.
