RIP James Randi. (August 7, 1928 - Oct. 20th, 2020) You are very missed. Your image and words will live on with us, through all your wisdom. Thank you James. I am so thrilled to see this video and wish I could have seen it sooner. I have followed Matt for a while now and I know they (Matt and James) grew close. Very sweet. Matt is an amazing and wonderful man. If you guys want to see more of Matt he is actively uploading and doing live content through The Atheist Experience and The Line on youtube. Have a great day

James Randi was one of the people instrumental in my development of skepticism back in the 70s, and thus my transition to atheism. It's so good to see him still kicking at his age, and with his mental faculties still intact.
@larrysbrain1627
@larrysbrain1627 7 лет назад
that's great, man! James helped me to escape religion, just a few years ago. I'v had grave concerns about religion for some time, but, by taking their advice, dismissed them and, instead, blamed myself. WOW! Five years ago, I would have hoped that I'd never be saying these things. Today, I am much happier than I had ever been before. Mainly, because now I am free of the fears and anxieties and self-loathing that religion demanded of me. James is a great pioneer in the modern skeptic/atheist movement. I like Carlin, too. LOL. His brazen way of telling the truth about "bullshit".
@williamallman299
@williamallman299 7 лет назад
+LARRY'S BRAIN I'm really glad to hear that. I'm sure Randi has inspired many people throughout the past half-century to begin questioning things, or at least planted seeds of doubt. George Carlin was always one of my favorite people too, I was very sad when he died. Yeah, all those negative feelings that religion imposes on people is one of the things I detest most about religion, especially Christianity with it's concept of original sin. But even above that, it gives people false hope in an afterlife, which prevents them from fully living life _now_. Live long and prosper!
@larrysbrain1627
@larrysbrain1627 7 лет назад
Thanks! Yeah, the afterlife thing is really really something... Just imagine if there were no religion. I like to view disillusioned believers as coming out of their tattered cocoons. My entire perspective has drastically changed! No longer am I a pathetic sinner, in desperate need of saving, who's supposed to have his head hung low. Today, I am just an average ape who desires to live with pride, dignity, self-love, and kind generosity. Free to evolve day by day. And, a little more understanding of other apes' predicaments. But, being a former amateur christian theologian, turned agnostic, lol, I have much resentment towards religion now. It is a terrible and harmful thing. People like Randi and Hitchens and Carlin are needed. Back in 90', I turned to religion as a means to stop drinking and to organize my life at 18 yrs old. In and out and up and down, it was a crazy fucking road. Finally, after banging my head off the alter one thousand times and humiliating myself in public, my eyes opened and, I said, "this stuff is bull shit!". Well, since then, after all the research I'v done, I'd never go back! I don't mind ordinary believers much; I let them alone. But I detest these leaders such as Popoff, ect... I'd like to see scientific programs develop and engineered to help addicts maintain sobriety. The A.A. nonsense hasn't help many people at all. And, i sure as hell never saw many ex drinkers and druggies going to church for very long, except between binges. Like James Randi said, " people are believing this crap and they are dying". All I can say to doubtful Christians is, this way is, by far, so much better. Thanks again, William!
@williamallman299
@williamallman299 7 лет назад
+LARRY'S BRAIN No thanks are necessary Larry, it's always a pleasure for me to compare notes with a fellow ex-believer (as most of us are). :-) I would like to point out a few things to you though, that might help change your perspective even more. One, we are not average apes, we humans are _highly evolved_ apes. I personally feel a bit humbled that we are only apes, and thus share a kinship with most of the life-forms on our little blue dot, but at the same time our evolutionary ancestors survived everything an indifferent universe could throw at them, resulting in our emergence as the only species on the planet capable of creating a global civilization. We are fricking _awesome_, and we should act like it. By that I mean we have an obligation to our species to help as many people as possible to emerge from their cocoons (as you put it) with understanding, compassion and patience, to work towards the goal of removing religion from the human experience. Second, there ARE drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs that are science-based, and for most people they are indeed more effective than AA, because they look at the core causes of addiction from both a psychological and physiological viewpoint, giving the individual the tools necessary for self-reliance and self-empowerment, thus greatly increasing long-term success. AA doesn't work well because it relies on a "higher power", i.e. an external agent. I also would never go back, and from my exchanges with others on FB group pages like The Thinking Atheist Fanpage and Atheist Safehouse, the vast majority of atheists not only wouldn't, but _couldn't_, go back. We have fought too hard to overcome our indoctrination, to win our freedom from the controlling and demeaning mind-set of religion, and we are forever changed by that.
@larrysbrain1627
@larrysbrain1627 7 лет назад
I like your comments... It's exciting to be "open" to new info, with freedom to change my mind. You're right, humans are an extraordinary species. As former believers, we have fought hard. Many of us have become roundly self-educated in the issues and subjects concerning religion & science. I'v been using SMART recovery to deal with my alcoholism. It's working. If and when I have an opportunity to help someone else, especially a young person, I would say to them, "there is a hero, and that hero is you! Only be willing to change your mind about yourself and acquire tools to enable you to help yourself. You can do it!"

I recently watched a documentary on Netflix about professional, working, traveling magicians. During one of the crowd shots at the (invitation only) Magic Castle, there was Matt on my screen! I hit pause and...frankly...lost my mind for a moment. My kids looked at me like I was crazy, and I had to explain why it was so cool to see a "professional skeptic" at a place essentially dedicated to voluntary deception. I then made brief mention of Penn Jillette before starting the movie again. :-) Until then, I only knew Matt for his Atheist work. I had no idea he was also a conjurer. I absolutely *LOVED* the way Randi sold the Mentalism trick, and that upside down twist was awesome! I've seen a version of that one before, but it wasn't nearly as fulfilling as this one. Then, there was...of course...all the wisdom about skepticism in general. Great video.

James Randi, Let me just say that I had a similar experience, I went to sunday school for two weeks, the second week we were asked to bring in any book we liked that had pictures in it. I brought a history of the earth and dinosaurs. When I was asked about it, I recounted the age of the earth, that the dinosaurs were first on the scene, etc and that went down like a lead balloon. I some how managed to influence the 4 other children on the same table who went on to disrupt the rest of the school and it created a situation where my book was taken off me. My mother was told that I was not the sort of child they want in sunday school. My mother laughed at her for being so snooty.

James Randi is probably the wisest man alive today. He's also stupendously funny.

Randi has done more for skeptical thought than almost any other person in modern history. Fear not James, even in just the lifetime of the Internet, your work has born fruit and skepticism has grown and continues to grow.

Skepticism is not cynicism. Beautiful.

It seems true enough. I was the one in my rather-large family who loved and learned "magic". Now I'm the most skeptical.

how on earth have I only just discovered James Randi? I've been on a quest to reaffirm my atheism and learn more about what I don't believe in for nearly 3 months and watched my first video of him last night, been binge watching him ever since! He's brilliant and I absolutely love his wit!

His "conjuring" tricks left me dumbfounded on what even happened. On the other hand, he is a master of exposing frauds.

So Matt turned out to be an excellent interviewer too. I bet he would make a great moderator in a debate or panel

88 and looking pretty good! Glad he appears to be in great health. So he's Canadian. My dad born in SLC, but grew up in Idaho, I myself born and raised in Idaho. Randi's accent and lexicon has always reminded me of dad's. So us Idahoans do have similar Canadian accents and lexicon. Even southern Idaho which isn't very close to the Canadian border.
