At the time of this recording Jett Lawrence had not yet wrapped up his first AMA Motocross title. Earlier this year Jase has been criticized for over-hyping Jett Lawrence and here he puts the question to multi time champion Grant Langston.
//
Grant Langston is a South African World and AMA Motocross Champion, was the voice of the AMA Outdoors, along side Jason Weigant, for almost 8 seasons and owns one of the premiere motorcycle dealerships in the United States. He also happens to be one of the most fun dudes in the industry and I am so stoked I was able to chat at length with the man we call GL!

@@ItsMeBro personally i respect someone who will risk everything to win every race much more than someone who aims to be consistent. When James Stewart was on, no one could beat him. At his peak he won every single moto in an outdoor season and the supercross titles he earned, he won almost every race. Back in the day before Stew started to get close to retirement, he either won or crashed putting it all on the line to win. There was no being happy and settling with a podium for Stew.

But he needs to sweep the 250W this year to stay in that convo. You can make an argument he needed to win the 2021 SX season to be in this convo. When you have riders on the same program all busting out close times of course they won't look as fast as James. Times have changed lap times are much faster at the same tracks. He's saying that the team is holding him back from going out and getting a bunch 1-1's, I just don't see that. Jett is certainly being smart about things, but he doesn't always have the speed to win. James always had the speed at this point in his career. It wasn't even close. Also, let's not forget he was on 125 against 250s! Actually, I believe James learned to scrub from the mountain bikers and bmx guys. Those guys scrub a 25 pound bike to stay low on a 10 foot jump, but James moved that technique into dragging peg off the lip of an 80 ft jump and he wouldn’t even ride straight at the damn thing. Now, every line going off the face of a scrub-able jump on the pros tracks have curvy ruts going off it. Insane. So, I’m not meaning to downplay the idea that “Jameses legacy transcended sports”, but rather I think that he was able to see something in another sport and creatively find a way to apply that concept to motor sports racing on the only motor vehicle that can do such a damn thing (the almighty mx bike). Like a great football player applying body-moving techniques learned from ballet or something like that.

Big James says in an interview that he tried to get James to back it down a little bit, but James said he didn't feel out of control at that pace. That late 90's-00's mentality was different too. 2nd place didn't mean a thing, it was about winning and going as fast as possible. Everything is micromanaged now to maximize points and it's a different mindset. I loved watching James every lap because he was always going for it. Not the best strategy for championships, but the most fun to watch.

About amature moto becoming almost institutional, that was kind of understated. Manufacturers are signing kids in 65cc. Some earlier. Its like they want their own Hayden Deegans to sell their bikes. But its becomming a thing where there is no competition for those factory deals outside of the factories own bull-pen. Just like formula one. So..... Best riders will make it to the top? Not in this system with factories actively trying to make amature racing a milionaires only sport like formula one.

To this day, no-one has had more RAW SPEED on a dirt bike than James Stewart. That said I think Jett Lawrence has the whole package, he has race craft and racing maturity at 18 that normally takes years to develop. If he doesn't get sucked in and start to believe the PR hype, he has all the tools to have a career that has more championship titles than James amassed. Given James' speed he should have won waaay more. Jett's smooth style is more in the Everts mode of flowing deceptively fast around a track as opposed to the all-guns blazing, balls-to-the-wall, flat-out Bubba style...Both great to watch, and like I say, I think he may win more championships, but if you want a man to put down the fastest lap of a track you've ever seen then there's still no one faster (historically) than James Stewart IMO...

Its essentially reached its peak level. To see what Jett is doing at his age is phenomenal and in my opinion is on par with what James did. Like, James can be as fast as he wants, but this year we saw that Jett is gonna finish races he knows he cant win instead of going for it and crashing out. Stew definitely was the fastest raw pace guy weve ever seen (on average), but hes not the best rounded rider weve seen. That definitely belongs to RC and then RV, then probably RD and maybe Tomac if we consider nationals. Stew was an all time beast but i think jett is on the RC/RV path. Every year athletes in all sports innovate and improve and constantly become better and better at what they do. The only way James Stewart or RC in their prime would beat guys like Jett Lawrence or Eli Tomac is if our sport and our athletes haven’t progressed in 15 years. The level of competition since 2005-2010 has sky rocketed it’s simply common sense that the current top pros are going around the tracks faster than what JS7 and RC4 were. And I’m not just talking about Jett Lawrence I mean the top 10-15 riders in each class would be going faster in 2021 than what those guys were going in 2005

I honestly think if james trained for 6 months to year right now and got his head in the game he would still compete. The dude is that good and for anyone to say that he cant hang with the new talent they are out of their minds. James did shit on a bike that guys still dont do. Hes not the goat but he is the gnarliest dude to ever ride a dirtbike. To put him and jett in the same conversation doesn't make much sense. Give him a few more years then maybe but i dont see it yet. James was way ahead of his time and he has beaten the best. Jett is still on 250s. Jett rips no doubt but you cant compare him to legends. James changed the sport forever and guys wouldn't be riding the way they are now without him. Toronto 2014 is a perfect example. Made everyone look like amateurs and that wasnt his only race he performed like that. Dude had faster lap times on a 125 than the guys on 250s back in the day. He was wicked fast and rode to win or die. Im sorry but these rich boys now dont have that ride or die mentality. Racing is not what it used to be. They are definitely good but most of them grew up with parents having money and having unlimited access to training. James started poor just like alot of the other legends. Just my 2 cents.
