Multiple weight division World Champion James "Lights Out" Toney sparring Steve "The Gentle Giant" Vukosa at Wild Card Boxing Gym under the watchful eye of "Super Trainer" Freddie Roach.
K9boxing they reeeeally reaally do. Even if they’re light shots. Toneys being super generous giving him lots of different opportunities to work from different angles etc. I’ve always heard part of toneys mastery, outside of natural skill, cane from CONSTANT sparring tho. 🤷🏿♀️

So proud that steve vukosa boxed in the streetbeefs yard several times....the mans a legend in our circle, and hes also a great guy, with a great character...pretty cool that he won himself a nationally recognized belt last year!...keep going steve!
This might sound pretty stupid, but he beat me too.I felt a bit better about it after he won the National G.G.'s about a year later. 😆 He went on to win the Pal Nationals finals too. I believe it was '98.
Yeah he preferred sparring over roadwork so think about all those hard rounds plus almost 100 pro fights without ever being stopped. Now he can barely speak coherently, it's a shame.
@@theequalizers1983 as long as you dont fight as long as Toney did you *should* be ok for the most part. However this is if you dont get hit on the head too much.
@@chileno189 But He's Alive can Play With His Kids, and Still Can Hop in there And Whoop some Novice Ass for about 5 rounds. Boxing Is a Risk Bro, Take it or Leave it.
Thanks! We need more!!! This is a classic example of just being relaxed! Yeah Toney has a lot of experience but he doesn’t waste his movements! He’s always in range and his relaxation aides him in his reflexes as well.
Believe it or not his talent is that exact thing that held him bacc sometimes u over estimate yourself wen your are naturally got which create urges to take shortcuts or a mindset that makes you work less intense because u believe ur that gud without it
Great to watch the legendary Toney spar as always. It hurts to see him willingly take so many shots though, all the shots he ate in sparring over the years degraded him alot. Unnecessary punishment
extremely well defensive philly shell fighter but also had immense dog fight in him, if he blocked or slipped all your punches he was happy but if you managed to hit him, he was not phased and wanted that payback.
All those little taps to the head really add up over the years. Its not about taking damage its about taking CONSTANT damage. One big punch is better than taking 50 little punches. Young fighters out there remember the golden rule HIT AND DONT GET HIT. Fuck all that ego and showmanship for the cameras. Protect ya head!
Note Tony also rolls and turns ever so slightly to take off the edge on every single punch. He is without a doubt one of the best to ever do it. The only way to beat James is when he beats himself. Truly a gift to the sport of boxing.
@Joepie De poepie dag meneer joepie de poepie leuk om iemand met zoon elegant naam tegen te komen. Bij het bekijken van een sparpartijtje tussen 2 meneertjes
I fought Vukosa in amateurs. He would be 3 feet away smashing toney with jab. He was OBIOUSLY working on inside fighting.your a fool if you think Vukosa would not use his reach.
I fought Steve in the Amateurs the yr he won nationals. It was my 8th fight . He was fast & i was green. Had i had ten more bouts before i met up with him he would not have bern standing at the end..but he won and thats that..
Sad to watch 😔 James lights out Toney should of been protected from himself..... Probaly took more punishment sparring than in actual fights & Nigel Benn didn't like sparring & Imo he was right. Truly savage footage. James Lights out Toney LEGEND 🥊🥊🙏
when he became a heavyweight, he stopped training conditioning altogether lol. Dude just came to the gym, didn't even bother warming up and went straight to sparring
I fought Vukosa the year he won Natl superheavy title. RSC 2.. IT WAS MY 8TH FIGHT HIS 60 SOMETHING.. I GOT HIT HAD A FLASH KNOCKDOWN I GOT RIGHT UP. REF SAID I WAS BENDING AT THE WAIST?? WTF IS WRONG WITH THAT.No sour grapes, but if he had not blocked the hook I sent to his liver..he would have been off to the shitter to clean his drawers..
Everyone commenting about these shots Toney is taking..Did anyone notice this guy is a southpaw!!! Toney landing/slipping more shots when he switches oit his conventional stance..
Take notes, dont be a lazy fighter Just because you can make some slick moves, doesn't mean you lay on the ropes Move your feet, move your head and Tony didn't move his feet, lazy...
toney looks like he is playing around but still getting hit too much which is why he now slurs etc. with the right discipline he could have been the best ever. still was damn good though. ❤
He looks like he just letting the big guy work, giving him rounds, and having a good time, "getting worked" I dunno, he doesnt look interested in returning shots, he is prolly helping the big guy train
Adam Massey you don’t help somebody train by letting them land shots like that. And if you’ve seen Toney spar before, he’s a huge dick during the process. He’s not your friendly sparring partner. He’s talking mad shit in there with this guys too.
Mike Hawk not caring if you get hit is the key that opens the door to being relaxed in the ring. It can lend its self to poor defensive habits as natural reflexes waver
James Toney's an old school fighter. He's said many times that he 'loves to get hit.' Boxing's a contact sport after all. James is usually brutal on his sparring partners. Nobody took it easy on Toney in sparring when he was starting out.
I love middleweight Toney. This heavier lazy Toney is too frustrating to watch. James gets hit way too much in the sparring sessions as he moved up. Way way too many landed shots on him here.
not a good showing for Toney; he must've had a tough workout session before these rounds as he looked dead tired and sloppy. not sure what the point of sparring such as these are, when they're not working on anything in particular and aren't getting coached. just pointless brain damage
training for when toney is tired, i think its important to know how to deal with someone when your dead tired, thats why mayweather is amazing and never gasses, he knows where to rest and were he can coast, and if you can find those places to catch your breath while youre tired it can help alot, ive seen alot of guys forget technique once they get tired and feel the pressure
