Every time you think Jirov is done, he comes right back at you, like a zombie with half its head blown off and an axe buried in its chest. In the 8th, he really put it on Toney - mauled him, butted him, shoved him...and drilled him in the nuts for an added bonus. The last 90 seconds of that round were probably Jirov's best of the fight and Toney really seemed to be fading. But Lights Out was made for the championship rounds.

Even though there has to be a winner (unless it's a draw of course), when fights like this take place, there are no real losers because the fight itself becomes almost bigger than the men/women involved. This fight showed the crazy willpower of two men, and the skill to go with it. These are the fights I love most. Two opposing styles from two completely different athletes, but the difference in their styles, and their approaches is what makes a great fight like this possible. If you put two counter punchers together, it can be a snooze fest if you aren't a hardcore boxing fan that knows what is happening. It's when you put a pressure fighter with a high work rate against a more defensive fighter, or you put a heavy handed KO artist against a boxer/puncher that the fireworks start to fly. This fight between Toney and Jirov,, and the Holyfield vs Qawi fight are the best cruiserweight bouts I have ever seen because of the contrast in styles. Actually, both fights might be up there with some of the best fights regardless of weight class, or era.

Correct result by the judges. Lederman's scorecard is a joke. Look at the stat box at 49:00. Although JT threw 220 less punches after 11 rounds, he LANDED 109 MORE punches and almost doubled Jirov's % landed. Throwing more punches won't count for much unless they land. This is a testament to JT's unbelievable defense. It was also clear from Jirov's swollen face at the end of the bout that the more effective shots were thrown by JT.
@softbigotry4058
@softbigotry4058 3 года назад
This was the first fight for me where I realized in real time that Lederman will score for the fighter literally just for moving forward, more often than not. Toney won 8 rounds clearly (an argument can be made for 9), and Jirov lost two points between the knockdown and that ridiculous low blow...and he STILL had this fight a draw. His scorecard is almost as bad as the judge who scored Mayweather-Canelo even. Jirov was effectively finished as a top fighter as a result of the beating Toney gave him, whereas in his next fight, James moved up to heavyweight and stopped Holyfield.

Really interesting that the commentary was so skewed in favor of Jirov. This is a fight that shows you what a commentator values most in scoring a fight: Jirov landing the highest number of punches vs. Toney's far more effective aggression with fewer, heavier punches that, while fewer, had a much clearer impact on the opponent. Normally I think judges err on the side of the busier fighter. But this was a case where I think Toney's aggression was just so much more effective than Jirov's that I have a hard time seeing this as anything other than a clear win for Toney. Toney's punches were taking a clear toll on Jirov more and more, and Toney never seemed hurt

Jirov didn't even land more punches; he just threw more. Toney landed over a hundred more punches. Lederman's score card was atrocious.
@GodkingAustin
@GodkingAustin 4 месяца назад
@@glenm99 A hundred more punches? According to compubox, Toney landed 380 punches to Jirov's 411. I still agree Lederman's score was pretty wack though, Toney's punches had way more impact and I think most judges would probably score similarly to the three official judges here

What is amazing is that Jirov, along with Michael Nunn, was the second undefeated southpaw Toney beat using the Philly Shell. I don't recall anyone else ever successfully using it against a world class southpaw.

I have to say I respect these trainer's,greatly,a ton of respect, specially for the old school.But some of that corner instruction it makes you think,they just fell a little short,they tell the Russian,you have to throw more punches.these guys punch count was already very high,and what's throwing more punches when your hardest shots aren't able to land.what a great referee!!
@robotboy719
@robotboy719 2 года назад
Agreed. They'd clearly decided coming in that Toney would break from the pace and didn't have a backup plan. To be fair, Brooks tries to get Jirov to punch more effectively. After the first, Brooks says, 'Remember, when he plants that foot, step around. Get a clean shot.' So they tried to prepare for Toney's elusiveness but where do you find a sparring partner who can give you that sort of defensive slickness? Later on, Brooks gives pretty clear advice ('You gotta move your head!') but by that point Jirov is too battered to think. A game dude but he took a hideous beating and was never the same.
