Mavrovic had one of the best chins I’ve ever seen at heavyweight. The shots he took and never stumbled were really good shots and lots of them. I’m surprised we never saw much more of him in the 90’s. He was good 👍🇬🇧
Why we didn't see Mavrovic again was because nobody wanted a piece of him. He took everything Lewis threw and was never rocked, and threw solid shots back at him. He could have dropped some top 10 world heavyweights. Why in the hell would you take that risk unless there was a big purse put up? Zeljko was not a stiff, but a durable fighter.
@@Whitegorillaboy he was hard as hell. He would be a nightmare for anyone. He gave Lewis a tough fight. He should’ve been a big name of the 90’s heavyweight scene.
Hats off to Mavrovic on his conditioning and chin. He took some bombs and kept walking forward. Not the most technical boxer, but he stood with Lewis for 12 rounds.
@@danjithetruth1735 Lennox Lewis has lost only 2 professional fights in his life. He avenged them both. Not understanding what you're saying, I'm guessing English is not your first language.

Lewis knocked out Mike Tyson, but couldn't properly defeat a guy twice thinner than Tyson. Don't get me wrong, this is not aimed against Lennox, who is a top boxer by anyone's opinion. I'm just saying that nobody expected this much resistance from Mavrovic (just look at him) against one of the best boxers of all times. And Lewis is definitely that.
@@cinegraphics Maybe Mavrovic had a way better chin than Tyson and was never stopped in his career ? And being heavier does not automatically make your chin better.
I watched this fight that time. As a boxer, Mavrovic was very courageous. He took a real beating from the "great" Lewis but still coming forward. That is a how a passionate boxer is supposed to be, could take any hard shots without giving up.
@aaron pryor Agreed, that is usually the case. But in this case, I think Mavrovic would have been better off doing what Ruiz did, take it on the chin and just keep coming forward, and lay the man out. LL was a great fighter, great technique, but watching this fight, and the 2 fights where he was knocked down and lost, he doesn't have a great chin. That is why I think LL would have lost to a prime Tyson with Rooney still as his trainer [and Cus still being alive], and LL wouldn't have beaten a hard puncher with a good chin like Foreman in his prime.
Guess Aaron you wouldt tell him that in his face would you... He was in a fight for the Titel in heavyweight. To come there is a loooong way of sweating blood. and now look at your comment. Did your mama not explain to you how that works?
Zeljko thank you very much for representing your country so proudly and bravely against one of the best HW of all time. You showed more then enough heart in this match even the mighty Lewis couldn’t put you down ❤️🇭🇷💪💪👊
no one would be able to take tat kind of punches from Lewis..really we have to appreciate the challenger. Lennox the big Lion and mavrovic a bit small lion. both are Great. no one ever fought against Lennox like tis. Lennox Lewis the undefeated lion.
Mavrović said that the blow to the liver shook him. The punches he received in the chin, uppercuts, straights and crosses did not hurt him even though he felt them, but that punch in the liver shook him and he needed several rounds to recover.
That was a great fight. Mavrovic was tough, fast and came with a plan, attack first. His style of charging in whilst throwing straight lefts and rights, especially in the first three rounds, would have been a challenge for anyone to contend with. All credit to Lennox, he did what he had to and turned the fight around for a comprehensive win on points. Mavrovic had a 27-0 undefeated record up to this contest and was the no 1 contender. He'd ko'd a lot of opponents during early rounds, so LL was wise to be cautious. Notably Mavrovic retired after this fight, As a footnote, the US commentary team was without exception, lamentable.
The Croatin’ had the heart and fierceness of a tiger and an Iron Jaw! Amazing he could take those solid punches from Lewis and keep on. Good fight. It Looked like Lewis was shocked & amazed the guy wouldn’t go down! Good fight!
Mavtovic je Crnogorsko prezime uglavnome pravoslavni ga imaju, a Filipovic takodje, Parlov ne znam a Benes Cesko katolic ko. Parlov bi mogao biti Hrvatsko valjda?

@@eliking3333 Glad someone else agrees! - how would the heavyweights today have dealt with the calibre of for examples, Marvrovic, David Tua, Ikeabutchi, Chris Byrd, Ray Mercer....never mind Lennox Lewis!...all of them formidable opponents
George got it right-Lennox had a great jab (& a devastating straight right) but Lennox tended to get lazy, the times he lost we’re times were he didn’t employ them straight punches enough and looked past his opponents. He went hook-to-the-nogging crazy in both of them McCall fights.
Lennox had Alot of holes in his style. I kind of liked him better as a fighter before steward. Yeah Steward had success but he went too far into safety first. It also put more bad habit's Easter to see. He was fortunate to not fight many that could exploit them.
2:55 while announcing Lennox Lewis: "...outstanding professional record... 23 professional victories, 27 by knock-out..." Wow, very interesting stats, he's got 27 knock-outs out of 23 victories. So, around 117% of knock-outs. Didn't know that's possible. Was statistics that different in 1998??
Lewis was one of the best heavyweights, maybe the best of his time. But it would've been very interesting if he could have fought a prime Ali, or a prime Foreman, or even Mike Tyson of the late 1980's. Vitali K. was ahead of him on the scorecards.
"Most Lewis fans did not expect Lewis having to sweat out 12 rounds against a vegetarian from Croatia whose never been heard of on this side of the planet" .. Classic line!
Coz u know shit about boxing and thats a fact. Zed was rly good boxer and very skilful. Lennox was just better. But u do bealive that it was a lucky Andy Ruiz Jr punch, what AJ said, I dont.
Man, boxing commentators are hilarious! I think their wit is matched only by Baseball commentators (A sport that I also love) Jim Lampley's one of, if not the, best: "I think he trained only a minute for the Briggs fight"; "If Zeljko upsets Lewis, will you start cooking tofu are your grill George?" LOL. Having said that, I think they seriously underestimated Mavrovic here. The way he stood there and took Lewis' best, while biding his time to deliver power shots of his own, spoke of a man who knew how the gas in his tank functioned: short fuses with high effectiveness--BOOM, BOOM, BOOM ⛽ Not that I think Lewis got outclassed here, he outboxed him for sure (I have it 9-2-1), but like my Dad always told me when I was a small child watching combat sports with him, "The Great thing about watching Heavyweights [fight] is all it takes is One Punch to end it." I believe Mavrovic had the cardio to best Lewis at the end, but he got put at Psychological disadvantaged early on by Lewis' punishing volleys! Great fight all around!
Kudos to Mavrovoc for going the distance, he is a hard case for sure. This was his last fight, he then developed a mysteryillness and lost a lot of weight, He also went into the agriculture business producing his own Eco Friendly food products but unfortunately I don't think it worked out. There was supposed to be a comeback in 2013 at the age of 43 but it was called off when he suffered broken ribs in sparring (not a good sign.) Not sure what else he's doing now but I think he might be a boxing reporter / commentator / pundit in his home country.
Mavrovic is naturally weights up to 85 kg max. He used to much additives or some shit to keep this weight around 100 kg for heavyweight. Those additives fuck up his health, especially his liver! If you see his looking now, that is his natural look.
Zelcho was very good for sure.. He was much avoided at the time.. Mccall, Hide, Akwinwande, the young Klitchos - no one wanted to fight him... Tyrel Biggs sparred with Zelcho for the Lewis fight.. Tyrel said Zelcho was much better than he thought.. Lewis knocked everything out of him in this fight..You could see Zelcho hated body shots..
Zvonimir
Lennox didn't get the credit he deserved for beating this dude. He was teak tough and would have beaten a lot of the top guys had he not retired due to injury.
Lennox would destroy all the current hw boxers in my personal opinion. Fury could maybe box as well and wilder might have a windmill right hand . But lewis had both . And was nasty as fuck when he wanted to be to go with it too lol.
2 put dobio hollyfielda. Mavrovic stvarno legenda.
Why didn't The Maverick go on to more televised bouts and title challenges? Seems like he fought this great fight and disappeared. Imagine paring him against W. Klitschko.
