@@rifroar Same for 82-year-old Neil Sedaka! How the R&R HoF could also leave him out, as a performer or superb songwriter is atrociously bad! He was inducted in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 1983 (written or co-written over 500 songs for himself and others), but it isn't enough for an all-time great as he is! He will be 83 on Mar. 13 (2022).
@@rifroar I never got that impression he bragged in public about his talent! As you said, talent is talent, and anyone who writes 500+ songs, and sang so many great timeless and popular hits is immensely talented!
@@freeguy77 No doubt, but The Rock Hall is very Political and if you're not in with the In Crowd, you don't make it. He definitely deserves to be there though.
Yes they do George, as does Grand Funk Railroad, the original 3 as well as many others. There's marginal bands in the rrhof who don't belong and that's an equal disgrace. Freakin politics are everywhere and it burns my ass.
One of the finest surf style songs ever written! Such happy memories of the first time I heard this back in the late 1970's on London's Capitol Radio and chosen by DJ Graeme Dene!
Jan and Dean were a very underrated surfing song duo. They were around before The beach Boys appearing on "American Bandstand" in 1959 singing "Baby Talk". They made several smash hits between 1963 and 1967.
Ah, the memories! I was a junior in high school when this first aired (Side B of Deadman's Curve) and remember cruising in my old beater car with my buddies. Miss those days and the "surf sound" in music!
In 1964 (the year of the Beatles 🎸) Jan and Dean finished sixth for total record sales. To not have them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is universal sin 😠. Get with it 🏄 🚗!!!!!
These two characters, Jan and Dean are even better today. Pure life force enjoyment, hedonism, and innocence. We need this more now than ever before✊🤟.
I saw Dean with the Surf City All Stars here in Florida last month - absolutely fantastic! I got to meet Dean - he is still the coolest ever! If he comes to your area, go see him.
I woke up this morning with this song in my head - haven't heard it for nearly 20 years (at least). I have the LP and 45, but for some reason I've not played them for ages. This takes me back to junior high when the song was first released, and I must say, I've never heard this full ("unedited") ending before; what a treat! I love the way the vocal lines weave around each other so harmoniously. This is real pre-woke, '60s surf, SO CAL happy music! ... oh, and hats off to the Wrecking Crew!
I love Jan and Dean, and their fun tunes, they were willing to entertain with novelty stuff and not just surfing and car tunes tunes. they were all about fun. Some of their songs were sung somewhat flat...this one was more in tune and it shows their greatness here. Besides, who doesn't wan to sing he hook with them? "papa do ron de ron" lol.
I Love The Movie Deadman's Curve Movie. I First Saw The Movie Back In 1978 On TV And I Haven't Seen It Since. I Love The Movie And The Song Deadman's Curve. The Movie Is Based On Jan Berry's Near Fatal Car Accident. Jan And Dean Both Triumphed Through Many Adversities Including Several Short Breakups. God Bless Them Both For Standing By Each Other And For Remaining Good Friends With Each Other. Thanks For The Memories Jan And Dean. David K.Dr.d.
I was lucky enough to see jan and dean twice... once in summer of 84 at the Santa Clara County fair grounds..afterwards dean signed the back of my jacket lol and people used to call me Dean lol because of his autograph lol.. Then about 8 years later I saw them at Santa Cruz beach board walk.. I will always remember their music and memories may jan rest in peace..
Used to cruise around Blackheath in a hotrod with Sheridan and Big Nick.Great times we used to listen to this and summer means fun in the rod. What times. When we saw a bunch of girls we used to howl out the window like a pack of wolf's. Bit like Wolkman Jack sound. Big Nick died that summer on his Triumph motorbike and that summer still haunts me today. 35 years on I have found that old hot rod and brought it for those memories. Still has it's old interior bit like stepping back in time.Got to put the yellow flames back on the car and paint it red as it was then.
Jan and Dean were always my favorite singing group growing up. I liked others but they were my favorite. The Beach Boys came in a very close 2nd place.
another one of my moms records that I would get out and play when home alone. I new every word of every song on the lp.. btw I was born in 56 so I was pretty young. Favroit is its as easy as 123. She also had the LP Jan and dean take Linda surfing.
With 16 Top 40 hits (6 of which were in ther Top 10) and over 20 million record sales, Jan & Dean have had more billboard chart success than half of the already inducted HOF acts. As for influence, it's hard to compete against the first ever made film portaying the lives of any rock stars, "Deadman's Curve" was a rating hit that literally lauched the comeback for Jan & Dean. And then there was the shear dedication of Jan Berry fighting back against all the odds to not only walk and talk again, but to perform music once more for another 25+ years. And yet with all of this, they continue to get overlooked by this so called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.....a real shame.
There was a movie a while back about Jan & Dean’s singing career. Believe Jan got in a car accident. Took awhile but they came back to sing together. Always one of my favorite groups.
The Movie Was Called Deadmans Curve Based On Jan And Dean's Hit Song Deadman's Curve. I Saw It Back In 1978 On Tv. Awsome Triumph For Both Jan And Dean. David K.Dr.d.
I love classic rock and all, but there is nothing like the classic doo-wop sound! If it weren’t for my grandpa I would have never made my own surfing music and jamming on the guitar while tailgating with my wagon. I probably wouldn’t have my love for hot rods and collection of moving violations!
If no one's mentioned it yet, this song had to be re-done from its original, "Gonna Hustle You" version because, "Little girl if you only knew, when summer comes gonna hustle you" was considered too risque.
Was exposed to Jan & Dean, Beach Boys and lots of American artists through Radio Caroline North in the UK. Loved the surf sound, but the lifestyle didn’t really chime with life in a Lancashire mill town. I still love the records though and I have been to California, albeit about 50 years too late!
This is a good stereo mix, as opposed to some of the others on here...there is one where the track is on one side and the vocals kind on the other..fascinating for study, but not very good for total listening...
If they capture your youth and you feel they should be in the Hall of Fame, then so be it. But please stop over inflating their vocal ability. I've heard enough of their music to know they're flat at times. And people keep mentioning these great harmonies. There are two guys singing, and all the rest of the harmonies are backup singers. Someone even said the two of them singing sounds more full than five Beach Boys singing lol That's because there are more than two guys singing. Do you really think two guys can produce five vocals simultaneously? Lol These guys couldn't hold a candle to The Beach Boys harmonies.
@@davidharvey7300 Well it makes me sick. So you're right, it's all about how it makes me feel 🤢 Although I do give them credit because they were singing surf music before the Beach Boys ever did and so they do deserve their place in history.
@@mtp4430 No problem with that Mike. I get what you're saying, but for whatever reason I still like it. Curious to know though why you listen to it if you hate it so much?
But re the Beach Boys you are absolutely right in my opinion. I've never understood why they are held in lesser regard than the Beatles. Beach Boys every time for me. I guess people just like what they like.
@@davidharvey7300 I never said that I hated it. I have studied, and played music since I was a child and was raised listening to, and absorbing, all kinds of music. Infact, I've never heard a form of music that I didn't like. I may not be a "fan" of every type of music, but I do enjoy songs from every genre that I've ever heard. My wife is Greek and I wound up listening to a lot of that music also. I even taught myself to play the bazookie. Jan and Dean's music has it's place. I never said that it didn't, and I do like the Beach Boys, who in the beginning basically copied Jan and Dean's sound. But if we're being honest, The Beach Boys catalog, as well as their singing, is on a whole other level. Jan Barry was a great producer, and even showed Brian Wilson the ropes. But Jan could never write something like God Only Knows, just to name one from their catalog. And Carl and Brian were head and shoulders above Jan and Dean vocally. And the reason I watched this video, and others like it is because I like everything, as I said earlier. And this type of music is no exception. Mostly I admire the strength and courage it took for Jan to get his life back together after that horrible accident. I admire that more than his contributions. But some of the comments were so overblown. Like a hero worship thing. They had a good run, and they had their place, no doubt about it, but people were putting them on a pedestal. That's all I was commenting about. I love the Beatles, who btw, are another band they can't touch, but I still don't put the Beatles up on a pedestal, and I want to puke when I see comments worshiping and idolizing them. These people perform and entertain us, they're not Gods. And Jan and Dean have their place, but I'm sorry, they just weren't top shelf. But as long as they made you happy, that's all that counts. It's all about reaching people and making them feel good.
