2 gentleman players of highest skill level. Wardner was far from his peak here and Samsonov was thought to inherit Wardner's world dominance. One thing we all know, both lasted a long time and will always be respected.
the scary thing about samsonov is, he decided very early in his career to focus on founding a family and not to push his career to the limits and still top 10 for almost 2 decades.
Samsonov with fantastic skills. The blocking and change of direction is gorgeous. And for almost 20 years he´s in the top ten. All respect to this great player.
@@maxfactor4209 Waldner demolished Kong Linghui most of the time,he beat convincingly Ma Lin in the Olympics and turned around his rivalry against Liu Guoliang winning the last 3 matches. He is far above them in achievements .
@@dickn.ormous1064 Samsonov had better longevity but waldner is the better player overall and by some margin. Sadly samsonov was never able to win an olympics or world championships.
@@marciovinicius862 Samsonov was a more difficult opponent for old Waldner.Last time he beat him was at the 2000 Olympics and he had to pull crazy forehands to hit through his defence. Samsonov was 1,90m good from both wings,Ma Lin as good as he was had poor defence and his short game had little effect on Waldner. Different match ups.
Asian women should not be allowed in the arenas. They have given me EIGHT broken windows over the years, because of their loud voices. (the voices themselves, not me throwing the racket....ok, one time)
Agreed. I believe this obnoxious crowd noise (at pro-level events no less) was one of the reasons why these televised table tennis matches couldn’t catch on here in the U.S. I for one, couldn’t stand to even watch this. Can you imagine if the crowds were like this at a pro tennis match??
24:49 I think Samsonov has a form of anti spin / low spin on his backhand. So many times Waldner's 2nd topspin drops into the net, which is a classic sign. Plus Waldner is always a little perplexed each time this happens, and keeps looking at his bat, and even gives it a wipe on a good few occasions. Great game.
I can promise you that he would have known that and adjusted his game for it. He's been in the world elite for almost 35 years, he knows all the materials. It was just humid and the modern rubbers back then performed shit in humidity. It probably is like so that he had a new series of rubbers played in low humidity and this was the first really humid game, and he went with the calibration for "old rubbers". That's my cent...
@@andreaseriksson8803 Waldner as good as he were didn't have a natural bh loop/counterloop, which is why he had troubles against short pimples. He did adjust for example against Liu Guoliang but he had to do special training and after the 2000 Olympics he had too many injuries to adjust to the 40mm ball. Hell, even Samsonov didn't really adjust his backhand to the 40mm ball as evidenced by his 2003 WTTC match against Kreanga. It was mentioned by many players at the time than bh driving/blocking didn't work with the 40mm ball because the two hemispheres had different hardness and you couldn't know which side of the ball you're hitting. One can see how Wang Liqin changed his bh to a more loopy counter movement with the 40mm,altough he was still weak against players with good bh.
@@dickn.ormous1064 I can agree with most of your analysis there. As a fact he didn't have a strong "modern" bh loop although all in all he had a strong bh. It was just that his bh loop was of the 90's model.
Waldner seems to have a habit of blaming something other than himself when losing a match. Another time when losing badly to a Chinese player, he started to rub his shoulder as if injured.
WALDNER was not in his form at all. He missed so many simple returns and was unable to simply move here. The great king of table tennis in all times seems losing the kingdom. Feel bad with great respect to the Mozart of TT. ,🙏
Incredible what happened within 14 years. This game is super slow-mo compared to modern players like Fan Zhendong, Xu Xin, Hugo Calderano, Ma Long, Timo Boll or Shoutimoto.
Rubber and sponge technology vastly improved after 2008. And there have been very recent advances in rubbers and sponges also. Plastic balls are used now too, which tend to spin a little bit less than the celluloid balls. And hell, even blade technology has improved considerably in recent years. This is why the game looks different nowadays. Player styles play a small part too. And the styles are now being shaped by the new technology in the equipment. It's all about power shots, power blocks, and agility from the player. And honestly, Waldner wasn't overly heavy on spin, and he wasn't overly powerful either. His greatness stems from manipulating his opponents' shots. He would set you up with a decent look at your "best" personal shot and usually he would get you to hit it cross-table to his backhand. And boy, he loved the backhand block. He would block up the line a bunch too. And he was such a master at manipulating the play like that, that it was really difficult to get him out of his setups. I'm sure he had tons of setups and finishes. And he could pull him off. Nothing else even mattered. Waldner in his absolute prime would SMOKE any current top guys like Fan Zhendong. It doesn't matter how quick Fan moves. Waldner will make it look physically effortless and totally smash Fan. JUST SAYING!
@@ttjesus4959 Bro this is what waldner did to yan sen in wttc 1997. He purposely let him play his strong forhand just to say "This is the best you got?"
The sheer speed and spin from the ball right now is slower but nowadays the ball is played mostly off the bounce or at the highest point in his arc which results in faster paced rallys and less time for reaction. Despite rubber and sponge advancement, speed glue was faster.
I still remember 18 years old Waldner in world cup team final vs China. Chinese commentator said Waldner learned all Technics invented by Chinese. But use it better than all Chinese players, including their world champion. The golden era team China won 5 : 1. But it was very close.
He was better then all the Chinese player's. The Chinese today have it easy since Europe is so much weaker than 20 years ago. Timo Boll is still a top player today tells something a bout how easy it is.
These days it just called "booster" and most of the pro players still use it. Especially the Chinese. It's too expensive for the regular Joe to use though since "boosting" rubbers decreases the rubber's life considerably. They should really ban boosting too so everyone is on a level playing field. I would boost my rubbers too if i had an old Asian man to do it for me and then assemble all my bats. It's tricky, time consuming, and expensive and a bit wasteful. Rubbers that may last 2 or 3 years unboosted are only good for 2 or 3 months boosted.
Eloi Mumford Like better the fall harder non more I told her to leave me all alone that wat she’s done that lonely one and now I can’t longer I footstep pong is very hard bye
Waldner always was too tricky for Vladi. ...I never understood Waldner's so called "genius". Clumsy style, no fitness at all, technique is close to amateur... Never liked this player. But he has demonic concentration and intuition, and they almost always led him to success...
Wow, that comment is going out on a limb. Certainly the Chinese always said Waldner had flaws, but they were comparing minor differences from perfect technique of the time. However, his ability to disguise what shot & spin he was hitting made him unplayable at his best. Even here, way past his physical best, he shows what he can set up; but he failed to finish off many positions and Samsonov is way too good not to capitalise.
He was very agile in his prime and could hit great shots on the run.His technique was simply exceptional even by modern standards. His forehand loop and serve was the best of his generation. His aerobic capacity was elite pentathlon level.
Samsonov's revenge was actually his 3-0 victory over Waldner in 2001 WTTC. Only 4 yrs needed. They met 5 times. Waldner won the first 2 meetings in 1997, 2000 and Samsonov won the next 3 meetings, 2 in 2001 and this match in 2005.
@@somebose7395 It is a revenge. A win is a win. It is a World Cup match and it means something. Waldner not being as good as in his prime is not Samsonov's fault. Since he was competing then he better prepared to get his butt kicked.
I think Jorgen Persson in 2008 (42 years old) more better than Waldner in 2005 (40 years old). Persson in 2008 play almost equally with samsonov in Beijing 2008. In this match, Waldner look mediocre. If he play with Persson, I bet Persson will win
It's a match up thing.Persson has the reach and bh to keep up against Samsonov who has a similar style to him.But he wouldn"t beat Ma Lin in 2004.Also the Olympics had lighter schedule compared to WTTC which helped veterans.

Samsonov skills no more useful by modern ping pong ,no body block this days just attack ! He lost lot of times to Chinese modern player by this reason !!!
